1Có một người đau, tên là La-xa-rơ, ở Bê-tha-ni, là làng của Ma-ri và chị người là Ma-thê. 2Ma-ri là người đã xức dầu thơm cho Chúa, và lấy tóc mình lau chơn Ngài; chính anh người là La-xa-rơ đương đau. 3Vậy, hai chị em sai người đến thưa cùng Ðức Chúa Jêsus rằng: Lạy Chúa, nº§y, kẻ Chúa yêu mắc bịnh. 4Ðức Chúa Jêsus vừa nghe lời đó, bèn phán rằng: Bịnh nầy không đến chết đâu, nhưng vì sự vinh hiển của Ðức Chúa Trời, hầu cho Con Ðức Chúa Trời bởi đó được sáng danh. 5Vả, Ðức Chúa Jêsus yêu Ma-thê, em người và La-xa-rơ. 6Khi Ngài nghe người nầy đau, bèn ở lại hai ngày nữa trong nơi Ngài đương ở. 7Rồi đó, Ngài phán cùng môn đồ rằng: Chúng ta hãy trở về xứ Giu-đê. 8Môn đồ thưa rằng: Thưa thầy, hôm trước dân Giu-đa tìm ném đá thầy, thầy còn trở lại nơi họ sao! 9Ðức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Trong ban ngày há chẳng phải có mười hai giờ sao? nếu ai đi ban ngày, thì không vấp vì thấy sự sáng của thế gian nầy. 10Nhưng nếu ai đi ban đêm, thì vấp, vì không có sự sáng. 11Ngài phán như vậy, rồi tiếp rằng: La-xa-rơ, bạn ta, đương ngủ; nhưng ta đi đánh thức người. 12Môn đồ thưa rằng: Thưa Chúa, nếu người ngủ, chắc sẽ được lành. 13Vả, Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán lời đó chỉ về sự chết của La-xa-rơ; song môn đồ tưởng nói về giấc ngủ thường. 14Ðức Chúa Jêsus bèn nói tỏ tường cùng môn đồ rằng: La-xa-rơ chết rồi. 15Ta vì các ngươi mừng không có ta tại đó, để cho các ngươi tin; nhưng chúng ta hãy đi đến cùng người. 16Nhơn đó, Thô-ma, gọi là Ði-đim, nói với môn đồ khác rằng: Chúng ta cũng hãy đi tới đó đặng chết với Ngài! 17Khi Ðức Chúa Jêsus đến nơi, thấy đã chôn La-xa-rơ trong mộ bốn ngày rồi. 18Vả, thành Bê-tha-ni cách thành Giê-ru-sa-lem chỉ độ mười lăm ếch-ta-đơ. 19Có nhiều người Giu-đa đã đến đó đặng yên ủi Ma-thê và Ma-ri về sự anh chết. 20Lúc Ma-thê nghe Ðức Chúa Jêsus đến, thì đi đón Ngài; nhưng Ma-ri thì ngồi tại nhà. 21Ma-thê thưa cùng Ðức Chúa Jêsus rằng: Lạy Chúa, nếu Chúa có đây, thì anh tôi không chết; 22mà bây giờ tôi cùng biết mọi điều Ngài sẽ xin Ðức Chúa Trời, Ðức Chúa Trời ắt ban cho. 23Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Anh ngươi sẽ sống lại. 24Ma-thê thưa rằng: Tôi vẫn biết rằng đến sự sống lại ngày cuối cùng, anh tôi sẽ sống lại. 25Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Ta là sự sống lại và sự sống; kẻ nào tin ta thì sẽ sống, mặc dầu đã chết rồi. 26Còn ai sống mà tin ta thì không hề chết. Ngươi tin điều đó chăng? 27Người thưa rằng: Lạy Chúa, phải, tôi tin Chúa là Ðấng Christ, Con Ðức Chúa Trời, là Ðấng phải đến thế gian. 28Người nói xong, liền về, lén kêu em là Ma-ri, mà rằng: Thầy ở đằng kia, đương gọi em lại. 29Ma-ri vừa nghe mấy lời, vội vàng đứng dậy đến cùng Ngài. 30Vả, Ðức Chúa Jêsus chưa vào trong làng, nhưng còn đứng nơi Ma-thê đón Ngài. 31Khi những người Giu-đa đương ở trong nhà với Ma-ri và yên ủi người, thấy người đứng dậy đi ra vội vả như vậy, thì theo sau, vì nghĩ rằng người đến mộ đặng khóc. 32Nhưng Ma-ri, lúc đã tới nơi Ðức Chúa Jêsus đứng, vừa thấy Ngài, thì sấp mình xuống chơn Ngài mà nói rằng: Lạy Chúa, nếu có Chúa đây, thì anh tôi không chết! 33Ðức Chúa Jêsus thấy người khóc, và những người Giu-đa đi với người cũng khóc, bèn đau lòng cảm động mà phán rằng: Các ngươi đã chôn người ở đâu? 34Chúng thưa rằng: Lạy Chúa, xin hãy lại coi. 35Ðức Chúa Jêsus khóc. 36Người Giu-đa bèn nói rằng: Kìa, người yêu La-xa-rơ là dường nào! 37Có một vài người trong chúng nói: Người đã mở mắt kẻ mù được, há chẳng có thể cũng làm cho người nầy không chết sao? 38Bấy giờ, Ðức Chúa Jêsus lại đau lòng nữa, bèn đến phần mộ; mộ bằng một cái hang, trước cửa hang có một hòn đá chận lại. 39Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Hãy lăn hòn đá đi. Ma-thê, là em gái kẻ chết, thưa rằng: Lạy Chúa, đã có mùi, vì người nằm đó bốn ngày rồi. 40Ðức Chúa Jêsus lại phán: Ta há chẳng từng nói với ngươi rằng nếu ngươi tin thì sẽ thấy sự vinh hiển của Ðức Chúa Trời sao? 41Vậy, họ lăn hòn đá đi. Ðức Chúa Jêsus bèn nhướng mắt lên trời mà rằng: Thưa Cha, tôi tạ ơn Cha, vì đã nhậm lời tôi. 42Tôi biết rõ rằng Cha nhậm lời tôi luôn, nhưng tôi nói vậy là vì cớ đoàn dân nầy đứng chung quanh tôi, hầu cho họ tin rằng ấy chính Cha là Ðấng đã sai tôi đến. 43Khi Ngài nói xong, bèn kêu lên một tiếng lớn rằng: Hỡi La-xa-rơ, hãy ra! 44Người chết đi ra, chơn tay buộc bằng vải liệm và mặt thì phủ khăn. Ðức Chúa Jêsus phán cùng chúng rằng: Hãy mở cho người, và để người đi. 45Có nhiều người Giu-đa đã đến cùng Ma-ri và thấy sự Ðức Chúa Jêsus làm bèn tin Ngài. 46Nhưng một vài người trong bọn đó đi tìm người Pha-ri-si, mách cho họ sự Ðức Chúa Jêsus đã làm. 47Các thầy tế lễ cả và người Pha-ri-si nhóm tòa công luận, bàn rằng: Người nầy làm phép lạ nhiều lắm, chúng ta tính thế nào? 48Nếu chúng ta để cho người làm, thì thiên hạ tin người, rồi dân Rô-ma sẽ đến diệt nơi nầy và cả nước chúng ta nữa. 49Nhưng một người trong bọn họ, tên là Cai-phe, làm thầy cả thượng phẩm đương niên, nói rằng: Các ngươi chẳng biết gì hết! 50Các ngươi chẳng xét rằng thà một người vì dân chịu chết, còn hơn cả nước bị hư mất. 51Vả, người nói điều đó chẳng phải tự mình, nhưng bởi làm thầy cả thượng phẩm đương niên, người nói tiên tri về Ðức Chúa Jêsus sẽ vì dân mà chết; 52và không những vì dân thôi, mà cũng để nhóm con cái Ðức Chúa Trời đã tản lạc lại làm một đoàn. 53Từ ngày đó, chúng lập mưu giết Ngài. 54Cho nên Ðức Chúa Jêsus không tỏ mình rõ ràng trong vòng dân Giu-đa nữa, song Ngài đi trong miền gần đồng vắng, nơi một thành gọi là Ép-ra-im; và ở lại đó với môn đồ. 55Lễ Vượt Qua của dân Giu-đa gần đến, có lắm người trong xứ lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem trước ngày lễ để tẩy uế. 56Vậy, chúng kiếm Ðức Chúa Jêsus, và đứng trong đền thờ, nói với nhau rằng: Các ngươi tưởng thế nào? Người không đến giữ lễ hay sao? 57Vả, các thầy tế lễ cả và người Pha-ri-si đã ra lịnh, nếu ai biết Ðức Chúa Jêsus ở đâu, thì phải mách với họ, để họ bắt Ngài.
1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. 2It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. 7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.” 8The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.” 11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.” 12The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead. 15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.” 16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.” 17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away. 19Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.” 28When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.” 29When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. 31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.” 32Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus wept. 36The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!” 37Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?” 38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?” 41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me. 42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.” 45Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him. 46But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. 48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples. 55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?” 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

Indien iemand in den dag wandelt, zo stoot hij zich niet, overmits hij het licht dezer wereld ziet; 10Maar indien iemand in den nacht wandelt, zo stoot hij zich, overmits het licht in hem niet is. 11Dit sprak Hij; en daarna zeide Hij tot hen: Lazarus, onze vriend, slaapt; maar Ik ga heen, om hem uit den slaap op te wekken. 12Zijn discipelen dan zeiden: Heere, indien hij slaapt, zo zal hij gezond worden. 13Doch Jezus had gesproken van zijn dood; maar zij meenden, dat Hij sprak van de rust des slaaps. 14Toen zeide dan Jezus tot hen vrijuit: Lazarus is gestorven. 15En Ik ben blijde om uwentwil, dat Ik daar niet geweest ben, opdat gij geloven moogt; doch laat ons tot hem gaan. 16Thomas dan, genaamd Didymus, zeide tot zijn medediscipelen: Laat ons ook gaan, opdat wij met Hem sterven. 17Jezus dan, gekomen zijnde, vond, dat hij nu vier dagen in het graf geweest was. 18(Bethanie nu was nabij Jeruzalem, omtrent vijftien stadien van daar.) 19En velen uit de Joden waren gekomen tot Martha en Maria, opdat zij haar vertroosten zouden over haar broeder. 20Martha dan, als zij hoorde, dat Jezus kwam, ging Hem tegemoet; doch Maria bleef in huis zitten. 21Zo zeide Martha dan tot Jezus: Heere, waart Gij hier geweest, zo ware mijn broeder niet gestorven; 22Maar ook nu weet ik, dat alles, wat Gij van God begeren zult, God U het geven zal. 23Jezus zeide tot haar: Uw broeder zal wederopstaan. 24Martha zeide tot Hem: Ik weet, dat hij opstaan zal in de opstanding ten laatsten dage. 25Jezus zeide tot haar: Ik ben de Opstanding en het Leven; die in Mij gelooft zal leven, al ware hij ook gestorven; 26En een iegelijk, die leeft, en in Mij gelooft, zal niet sterven in der eeuwigheid. Gelooft gij dat? 27Zij zeide tot Hem: Ja, Heere; ik heb geloofd, dat Gij zijt de Christus, de Zone Gods, Die in de wereld komen zou. 28En dit gezegd hebbende, ging zij heen, en riep Maria, haar zuster, heimelijk, zeggende: De Meester is daar, en Hij roept u. 29Deze, als zij dat hoorde, stond haastelijk op, en ging tot Hem. 30(Jezus nu was nog in het vlek niet gekomen, maar was in de plaats, waar Hem Martha tegemoet gekomen was.) 31De Joden dan, die met haar in het huis waren, en haar vertroostten, ziende Maria, dat zij haastelijk opstond en uitging, volgden haar, zeggende: Zij gaat naar het graf, opdat zij aldaar wene. 32Maria dan, als zij kwam, waar Jezus was, en Hem zag, viel aan Zijn voeten, zeggende tot Hem: Heere, indien Gij hier geweest waart, zo ware mijn broeder niet gestorven. 33Jezus dan, als Hij haar zag wenen, en de Joden, die met haar kwamen, ook wenen, werd zeer bewogen in den geest, en ontroerde Zichzelven; 34En zeide: Waar hebt gij hem gelegd? Zij zeiden tot Hem: Heere, kom en zie het. 35Jezus weende. 36De Joden dan zeiden: Ziet, hoe lief Hij hem had! 37En sommigen uit hen zeiden: Kon Hij, Die de ogen des blinden geopend heeft, niet maken, dat ook deze niet gestorven ware? 38Jezus dan wederom in Zichzelven zeer bewogen zijnde, kwam tot het graf; en het was een spelonk, en een steen was daarop gelegd. 39Jezus zeide: Neemt den steen weg. Martha, de zuster des gestorvenen, zeide tot Hem: Heere, hij riekt nu al, want hij heeft vier dagen aldaar gelegen. 40Jezus zeide tot haar: Heb Ik u niet gezegd, dat, zo gij gelooft, gij de heerlijkheid Gods zien zult? 41Zij namen dan den steen weg, waar de gestorvene lag. En Jezus hief de ogen opwaarts, en zeide: Vader, Ik dank U, dat Gij Mij gehoord hebt. 42Doch Ik wist, dat Gij Mij altijd hoort; maar om der schare wil, die rondom staat, heb Ik dit gezegd, opdat zij zouden geloven, dat Gij Mij gezonden hebt. 43En als Hij dit gezegd had, riep Hij met grote stemme: Lazarus, kom uit! 44En de gestorvene kwam uit, gebonden aan handen en voeten met grafdoeken, en zijn aangezicht was omwonden met een zweetdoek. Jezus zeide tot hen: Ontbindt hem, en laat hem heengaan. 45Velen dan uit de Joden, die tot Maria gekomen waren, en aanschouwd hadden, hetgeen Jezus gedaan had, geloofden in Hem. 46Maar sommigen van hen gingen tot de Farizeen, en zeiden tot hen, hetgeen Jezus gedaan had. 47De overpriesters dan en de Farizeen vergaderden den raad, en zeiden: Wat zullen wij doen? want deze Mens doet vele tekenen. 48Indien wij Hem alzo laten geworden, zij zullen allen in Hem geloven, en de Romeinen zullen komen, en wegnemen beide onze plaats en volk. 49En een uit hen, namelijk Kajafas, die deszelven jaars hogepriester was, zeide tot hen: Gij verstaat niets; 50En gij overlegt niet, dat het ons nut is, dat een mens sterve voor het volk, en het gehele volk niet verloren ga. 51En dit zeide hij niet uit zichzelven; maar, zijnde hogepriester deszelven jaars, profeteerde hij, dat Jezus sterven zou voor het volk; 52En niet alleen voor dat volk, maar opdat Hij ook de kinderen Gods, die verstrooid waren, tot een zou vergaderen. 53Van dien dag dan af beraadslaagden zij te zamen, dat zij Hem doden zouden. 54Jezus dan wandelde niet meer vrijelijk onder de Joden; maar ging van daar naar het land bij de woestijn, naar de stad, genaamd Efraim, en verkeerde aldaar met Zijn discipelen. 55En het pascha der Joden was nabij, en velen uit dat land gingen op naar Jeruzalem, voor het pascha, opdat zij zichzelven reinigden. 56Zij zochten dan Jezus, en zeiden onder elkander, staande in den tempel: Wat dunkt u? Dunkt u, dat Hij niet komen zal tot het feest? 57De overpriesters nu en de Farizeen hadden een gebod gegeven, dat, zo iemand wist, waar Hij was, hij het zou te kennen geven, opdat zij Hem mochten vangen.
