1Hỡi anh em, trong vòng anh em chớ có nhiều người tự lập làm thầy, vì biết như vậy, mình sẽ phải chịu xét đoán càng nghiêm hơn. 2Chúng ta thảy đều vấp phạm nhiều cách lắm. Nếu có ai không vấp phạm trong lời nói mình, ấy là người trọn vẹn, hay hãm cầm cả mình. 3Chúng ta tra hàm thiếc vào miệng ngựa, cho nó chịu phục mình, nên mới sai khiến cả và mình nó được. 4Hãy xem những chiếc tàu: dầu cho lớn mấy mặc lòng, và bị gió mạnh đưa đi thây kệ, một bánh lái rất nhỏ cùng đủ cạy bát nó, tùy theo ý người cầm lái. 5Cũng vậy, cái lưỡi là một quan thể nhỏ, mà khoe được những việc lớn. Thử xem cái rừng lớn chừng nào mà một chút lửa có thể đốt cháy lên! 6Cái lưỡi cũng như lửa; ấy là nơi đô hội của tội ác ở giữa các quan thể chúng ta, làm ô uế cả mình, đốt cháy cả đời người, chính mình nó đã bị lửa địa ngục đốt cháy. 7hết thảy loài muông thú, chim chóc, sâu bọ, loài dưới biển đều trị phục được và đã bị loài người trị phục rồi; 8nhưng cái lưỡi, không ai trị phục được nó; ấy là một vật dữ người ta không thể hãm dẹp được: đầy dẫy những chất độc giết chết. 9Bởi cái lưỡi chúng ta khen ngợi Chúa, Cha chúng ta, và cũng bởi nó chúng ta rủa sả loài người, là loài tạo theo hình ảnh Ðức Chúa Trời. 10Ðồng một lỗ miệng mà ra cả sự khen ngợi và rủa sả! Hỡi anh em, không nên như vậy. 11Có lẽ nào một cái suối kia, đồng một mạch mà ra cả nước ngọt và nước đắng sao? 12Hỡi anh em, cây vả có ra trái ô-li-ve được, cây nho có ra trái vả được chăng? Mạch nước mặn cũng không có thể chảy ra nước ngọt được nữa. 13Trong anh em có người nào khôn ngoan thông sáng chăng: Hãy lấy cách ăn ở tốt của mình mà bày tỏ việc mình làm bởi khôn ngoan nhu mì mà ra. 14Nhưng nếu anh em có sự ghen tương cay đắng và sự tranh cạnh trong lòng mình, thì chớ khoe mình và nói dối nghịch cùng lẽ thật. 15Sự khôn ngoan đó không phải từ trên mà xuống đâu; trái lại, nó thuộc về đất, về xác thịt và về ma quỉ. 16Vì ở đâu có những điều ghen tương tranh cạnh ấy, thì ở đó có sự lộn lạo và đủ mọi thứ ác. 17Nhưng sự khôn ngoan từ trên mà xuống thì trước hết là thanh sạch, sau lại hòa thuận, tiết độ, nhu mì, đầy dẫy lòng thương xót và bông trái lành, không có sự hai lòng và giả hình. 18Vả bông trái của điều công bình thì gieo trong sự hòa bình, cho những kẻ nào làm sự hòa bình vậy.
1Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment. 2For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 3Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body. 4Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. 5So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! 6And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. 7For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. 8But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. 10Out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water? 12Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water. 13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. 15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed. 17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
1Zijt niet vele meesters, mijn broeders, wetende, dat wij te meerder oordeel zullen ontvangen. 2Want wij struikelen allen in vele. Indien iemand in woorden niet struikelt, die is een volmaakt man, machtig om ook het gehele lichaam in den toom te houden. 3Ziet, wij leggen den paarden tomen in de monden, opdat zij ons zouden gehoorzamen, en wij leiden daarmede hun gehele lichaam om; 4Ziet ook de schepen, hoewel zij zo groot zijn, en van harde winden gedreven, zij worden omgewend van een zeer klein roer, waarhenen ook de begeerte des stuurders wil. 5Alzo is ook de tong een klein lid, en roemt nochtans grote dingen. Ziet, een klein vuur, hoe groten hoop houts het aansteekt. 6De tong is ook een vuur, een wereld der ongerechtigheid; alzo is de tong onder onze leden gesteld, welke het gehele lichaam besmet, en ontsteekt het rad onzer geboorte, en wordt ontstoken van de hel. 7Want alle natuur, beide der wilde dieren en der vogelen, beide der kruipende en der zeedieren, wordt getemd en is getemd geweest van de menselijke natuur. 8Maar de tong kan geen mens temmen; zij is een onbedwingelijk kwaad, vol van dodelijk venijn. 9Door haar loven wij God en den Vader, en door haar vervloeken wij de mensen, die naar de gelijkenis van God gemaakt zijn. 10Uit denzelfden mond komt voort zegening en vervloeking. Dit moet, mijn broeders, alzo niet geschieden. 11Welt ook een fontein uit een zelfde ader het zoet en het bitter? 12Kan ook, mijn broeders, een vijgeboom olijven voortbrengen, of een wijnstok vijgen? Alzo kan geen fontein zout en zoet water voortbrengen. 13Wie is wijs en verstandig onder u? die bewijze uit zijn goeden wandel zijn werken in zachtmoedige wijsheid. 14Maar indien gij bitteren nijd en twistgierigheid hebt in uw hart, zo roemt en liegt niet tegen de waarheid. 15Deze is de wijsheid niet, die van boven afkomt, maar is aards, natuurlijk, duivels. 16Want waar nijd en twistgierigheid is, aldaar is verwarring en alle boze handel. 17Maar de wijsheid, die van boven is, die is ten eerste zuiver, daarna vreedzaam, bescheiden, gezeggelijk, vol van barmhartigheid en van goede vruchten, niet partijdig oordelende, en ongeveinsd. 18En de vrucht der rechtvaardigheid wordt in vrede gezaaid voor degenen, die vrede maken.
