1Gia-cơ, tôi tớ Ðức Chúa Trời và Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ, đạt cho mười hai chi phái ở tan lạc, chúc bình an! 2Hỡi anh em, hãy coi sự thử thách trăm bề thoạt đến cho anh em như là điều vui mừng trọn vẹn, 3vì biết rằng sự thử thách đức tin anh em sanh ra sự nhịn nhục. 4Nhưng sự nhịn nhục phải làm trọn việc nó, hầu cho chính mình anh em cũng trọn lành toàn vẹn, không thiếu thốn chút nào. 5Ví bằng trong anh em có kẻ kém khôn ngoan, hãy cầu xin Ðức Chúa Trời, là Ðấng ban cho mọi người cách rộng rãi, không trách móc ai, thì kẻ ấy sẽ được ban cho. 6Nhưng phải lấy đức tin mà cầu xin, chớ nghi ngờ; vì kẻ hay nghi ngờ giống như sóng biển, bị gió động và đưa đi đây đi đó. 7Người như thế chớ nên tưởng mình lãnh được vật chi từ nơi Chúa: 8ấy là một người phân tâm, phàm làm việc gì đều không định. 9Anh em nào ở địa vị thấp hèn hãy khoe mình về phần cao trọng mình, 10kẻ giàu cũng hãy khoe mình về phần đê hèn, vì người sẽ qua đi như hoa cỏ. 11Mặt trời mọc lên, nắng xẳng, cỏ khô, hoa rụng, sắc đẹp tồi tàn: kẻ giàu cũng sẽ khô héo như vậy trong những việc mình làm. 12Phước cho người bị cám dỗ; vì lúc đã chịu nổi sự thử thách rồi, thì sẽ lãnh mão triều thiên của sự sống mà Ðức Chúa Trời đã hứa cho kẻ kính mến Ngài. 13Chớ có ai đương bị cám dỗ mà nói rằng: Ấy là Ðức Chúa Trời cám dỗ tôi; vì Ðức Chúa Trời chẳng bị sự ác nào cám dỗ được, và chính Ngài cũng không cám dỗ ai. 14Nhưng mỗi người bị cám dỗ khi mắc tư dục xui giục mình. 15Ðoạn, lòng tư dục cưu mang, sanh ra tội ác; tội ác đã trọn, sanh ra sự chết. 16Hỡi anh em yêu dấu, chớ tự dối mình: 17mọi ân điển tốt lành cùng sự ban cho trọn vẹn đều đến từ nơi cao và bởi Cha sáng láng mà xuống, trong Ngài chẳng có một sự thay đổi, cũng chẳng có bóng của sự biến cải nào. 18Ấy chính Ngài theo ý muốn mình, đã dùng lời chân thật sanh chúng ta, hầu cho chúng ta được nên như trái đầu mùa của những vật Ngài dựng nên. 19Hỡi anh em yêu dấu, anh em biết điều đó: người nào cũng phải mau nghe mà chậm nói, chậm giận; 20vì cơn giận của người ta không làm nên sự công bình của Ðức Chúa Trời. 21Vậy, hãy bỏ đi mọi điều ô uế, và mọi điều gian ác còn lại, đem lòng nhu mì nhận lấy lời đã trồng trong anh em, là lời cứu được linh hồn của anh em. 22Hãy làm theo lời, chớ lấy nghe làm đủ mà lừa dối mình. 23Vì, nếu có kẻ nghe lời mà không làm theo thì khác nào người kia soi mặt mình trong gương, 24thấy rồi thì đi, liền quên mặt ra thể nào. 25Nhưng kẻ nào xét kĩ luật pháp trọn vẹn, là luật pháp về sự tự do, lại bền lòng suy gẫm lấy, chẳng phải nghe rồi quên đi, nhưng hết lòng giữ theo phép tắc nó, thì kẻ đó sẽ tìm được phước trong sự mình vâng lời. 26Nhược bằng có ai tưởng mình là tin đạo, mà không cầm giữ lưỡi mình, nhưng lại lừa dối lòng mình, thì sự tin đạo của người hạng ấy là vô ích. 27Sự tin đạo thanh sạch không vết, trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời, Cha chúng ta, là thăm viếng kẻ mồ côi, người góa bụa trong cơn khốn khó của nó, và giữ lấy mình cho khỏi sự ô uế của thế gian.
1James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, 3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. 6But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. 7For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. 8He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 9But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; 10and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. 11For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in his pursuits. 12Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him. 13Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. 15Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death. 16Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. 18Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. 19So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; 20for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. 21Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; 24for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does. 26If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
1Jakobus, een dienstknecht van God en van den Heere Jezus Christus; aan de twaalf stammen, die in de verstrooiing zijn: zaligheid. 2Acht het voor grote vreugde, mijn broeders, wanneer gij in velerlei verzoekingen valt; 3Wetende, dat de beproeving uws geloofs lijdzaamheid werkt. 4Doch de lijdzaamheid hebbe een volmaakt werk, opdat gij moogt volmaakt zijn en geheel oprecht, in geen ding gebrekkelijk. 5En indien iemand van u wijsheid ontbreekt, dat hij ze van God begere, Die een iegelijk mildelijk geeft, en niet verwijt; en zij zal hem gegeven worden. 6Maar dat hij ze begere in geloof, niet twijfelende; want die twijfelt, is een baar der zee gelijk, die van den wind gedreven en op en nedergeworpen wordt. 7Want die mens mene niet, dat hij iets ontvangen zal van den Heere. 8Een dubbelhartig man is ongestadig in al zijn wegen. 9Maar de broeder, die nederig is, roeme in zijn hoogheid. 10En de rijke in zijn vernedering; want hij zal als een bloem van het gras voorbijgaan. 11Want de zon is opgegaan met de hitte, en heeft het gras dor gemaakt, en zijn bloem is afgevallen, en de schone gedaante haars aanschijns is vergaan; alzo zal ook de rijke in zijn wegen verwelken. 12Zalig is de man, die verzoeking verdraagt; want als hij beproefd zal geweest zijn, zal hij de kroon des levens ontvangen, welke de Heere beloofd heeft dengenen, die Hem liefhebben. 13Niemand, als hij verzocht wordt, zegge: Ik word van God verzocht; want God kan niet verzocht worden met het kwade, en Hij Zelf verzoekt niemand. 14Maar een iegelijk wordt verzocht, als hij van zijn eigen begeerlijkheid afgetrokken en verlokt wordt. 15Daarna de begeerlijkheid ontvangen hebbende baart zonde; en de zonde voleindigd zijnde baart den dood. 16Dwaalt niet, mijn geliefde broeders! 17Alle goede gave, en alle volmaakte gifte is van boven, van den Vader der lichten afkomende, bij Welken geen verandering is, of schaduw van omkering. 18Naar Zijn wil heeft Hij ons gebaard door het Woord der waarheid, opdat wij zouden zijn als eerstelingen Zijner schepselen. 19Zo dan, mijn geliefde broeders, een iegelijk mens zij ras om te horen, traag om te spreken, traag tot toorn; 20Want de toorn des mans werkt Gods gerechtigheid niet. 21Daarom, afgelegd hebbende alle vuiligheid en overvloed van boosheid, ontvangt met zachtmoedigheid het Woord, dat in u geplant wordt, hetwelk uw zielen kan zaligmaken. 22En zijt daders des Woords, en niet alleen hoorders, uzelven met valse overlegging bedriegende. 23Want zo iemand een hoorder is des Woords, en niet een dader, die is een man gelijk, welke zijn aangeboren aangezicht bemerkt in een spiegel; 24Want hij heeft zichzelven bemerkt, en is weggegaan, en heeft terstond vergeten, hoedanig hij was. 25Maar die inziet in de volmaakte wet, die der vrijheid is, en daarbij blijft, deze, geen vergetelijk hoorder geworden zijnde, maar een dader des werks, deze, zeg ik, zal gelukzalig zijn in dit zijn doen. 26Indien iemand onder u dunkt, dat hij godsdienstig is, en hij zijn tong niet in toom houdt, maar zijn hart verleidt, dezes godsdienst is ijdel. 27De zuivere en onbevlekte godsdienst voor God en den Vader is deze: wezen en weduwen bezoeken in hun verdrukking, en zichzelven onbesmet bewaren van de wereld.
