1Cơn thạnh nộ của Ðức Giê-hô-va lại nổi phừng cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Ngài giục lòng Ða-vít nghịch cùng chúng mà rằng: Hãy đi tu bộ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên và dân Giu-đa. 2Vua bèn nói với Giô-áp, là quan tổng binh ở gần người, mà rằng: Hãy đi khắp các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ Ðan cho đến Bê -e-Sê-ba, tu bộ dân sự, để cho ta biết số dân Y-sơ-ra-ên là bao nhiêu. 3Giô-áp đáp cùng vua rằng: Nguyện Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của vua làm cho dân sự vua ngày nay được còn thêm gấp bằng trăm, và nguyện mắt vua chúa tôi thấy sự gia thêm ấy! Nhưng cớ sao vua chúa tôi vui lòng về một việc như vậy? 4Dầu vậy mặc lòng, lời của vua mạnh hơn sự chống trả của Giô-áp và các quan tướng. Vậy, Giô-áp và các quan tướng ở trước mặt vua, đều đi ra đặng tu bộ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. 5Sau khi qua sông Giô-đanh rồi, chúng hạ trại tại A-rô -e, về phía hữu thành ở giữa trũng Gát; rồi hại trại tại Gia-ê-xe. 6Từ đó họ đi vào trong xứ Ga-la-át, về hướng xứ thấp của Hốt-si. Kế đó, họ đến Ðan-Gia-an và miền chung quanh Si-đôn. 7Họ cũng đi đến thành lũy xứ Ty-rơ, vào các thành dân Hế-vít và dân Ca-na-an, rồi họ giáp đến Bê -e-Sê-ba tại miền nam Giu-đa. 8Như vậy, họ đi khắp xứ và trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem trong chín thành và hai mươi ngày. 9Giô-áp bèn trao cho vua cái sổ trọn sự tu bộ dân sự: trong Y-sơ-ra-ên có tám trăm ngàn người lính chiến, có tài cầm gươm được, và trong Giu-đa năm trăm ngàn người. 10Sau khi tu bộ dân sự rồi, Ða-vít bị lương tâm cắn rứt, bèn cầu Ðức Giê-hô-va rằng: Tôi đã làm như vậy, thật là đã phạm tội rất nặng. Vậy, bây giờ Ðức Giê-hô-va ôi! xin hãy cất tội lỗi của kẻ tôi tớ Ngài đã phạm; vì tôi có làm cách ngu dại quá. 11Sáng ngày mai, khi Ða-vít dậy, có lời của Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng tiên tri Gát, là người tiên kiến của Ða-vít, rằng: 12Hãy đi nói với Ða-vít: Ðức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Ta có ba điều định cho ngươi; trong ba điều đó, hãy chọn một, rồi ta sẽ lấy nó mà phạt ngươi. 13Gát đi đến cùng Ða-vít, thật các lời đó cho người, mà rằng: Vua muốn chọn điều nào? hãy bảy năm đói kém trong nước vua, hoặc trong ba tháng vua phải chạy trốn khỏi trước mặt kẻ thù nghịch đuổi theo vua, hoặc ba ngày dịch hạch trong nước vua? Bây giờ, hãy suy nghĩ và xem điều tôi phải thưa lại cùng Ðấng đã sai tôi. 14Ða-vít bèn đáp cùng Gát rằng: Sự khốn khổ tôi lớn thay! Thế thì, nguyện tôi sa vào tay của Ðức Giê-hô-va, vì những sự thương xót của Ngài là lớn lắm; nhưng chớ cho tôi sa vào tay của loài người ta. 15Vậy, Ðức Giê-hô-va khiến dịch hạch phá hại trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ buổi sớm mai cho đến thì giờ Ngài đã nhứt định. Trong dân sự, từ Ðan đến Bê -e-Sê-ba, chết bảy vạn người. 16Thiên sứ giơ tay ra trên Giê-ru-sa-lem đặng hại nó; song Ðức Giê-hô-va hối hận về tai họa ấy, bèn phán cùng thiên sứ hành hại dân sự rằng: Thôi! bây giờ hãy rút tay ngươi lại. Bấy giờ, thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va ở gần sân đạp lúa của A-rau-na, người Giê-bu-sít. 17Ða-vít thấy thiên sứ hành hại dân sự, bèn thưa với Ðức Giê-hô-va như vầy: Ấy chính tôi đã phạm tội, tôi là kẻ có tội; còn các con chiên kia có làm chi? Nguyện tay Chúa chỉ hành hại tôi và nhà cha tôi. 18Ngày đó, Gát đến tìm Ða-vít, và nói rằng: Hãy đi lên, lập một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va tại nơi sân đạp lúa của A-rau-na, người Giê-bu-sít. 19Vậy, Ða-vít theo lời của Gát, đi lên y như Ðức Giê-hô-va đã phán dặn người. 20A-rau-na ngước mắt lên, thấy vua và các tôi tớ người đi tới trước mặt mình, liền đi ra và sấp mình xuống đất trước mặt vua. 21Ðoạn, A-rau-na nói: Cớ chi vua chúa tôi đến nhà kẻ tôi tớ vua? Ða-vít đáp: Ấy đặng mua sân đạp lúc ngươi, và xây tại đó một cái bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va, để ngừng tai họa hành hại dân sự. 22A-rau-na tâu với Ða-vít rằng: Xin vua chúa tôi hãy dâng làm của lễ điều gì vua lấy làm tốt lành: Nầy những bò dùng làm của lễ thiêu; cộ và ách bò dùng làm củi để đốt của tế lễ. 23Ôi vua! mọi điều đó A-rau-na xin dâng cho vua. A-rau-na tiếp: Nguyện Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của vua tiếp nhận vua! 24Vua đáp cùng A-rau-na rằng: không không được; ta muốn mua hết của ngươi, cứ theo giá bạc. Ta không muốn dâng cho Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ta những của lễ thiêu không đáng giá chi. Vậy, Ða-vít mua sân đạp lúa và bò giá năm mươi siếc lơ bạc. 25Người lập tại đó một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va, và dâng của lễ thiêu cùng của lễ thù ân. Thế thì, Ðức Giê-hô-va động lòng thương Y-sơ-ra-ên, và tai họa trong xứ bèn ngừng lại.
1Again Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” 2The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number the people, that I may know the sum of the people.” 3Joab said to the king, “Now may Yahweh your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?” 4Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. 5They passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer: 6then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; and they came to Dan Jaan, and around to Sidon, 7and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba. 8So when they had gone back and forth through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. 10David’s heart struck him after that he had numbered the people. David said to Yahweh, “I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, Yahweh, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.” 11When David rose up in the morning, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12“Go and speak to David, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’” 13So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” 14David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let us fall now into the hand of Yahweh; for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into the hand of man.” 15So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men. 16When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough. Now stay your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house.” 18Gad came that day to David, and said to him, “Go up, build an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Yahweh commanded. 20Araunah looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. Then Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. 21Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy your threshing floor, to build an altar to Yahweh, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.” 22Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the cattle for the burnt offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood: 23all this, king, does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah said to the king, “May Yahweh your God accept you.” 24The king said to Araunah, “No; but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So Yahweh was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

Alzo toog Joab uit, met de oversten des heirs, van des konings aangezicht, om het volk Israel te tellen. 5En zij gingen over de Jordaan, en legerden zich bij Aroer, ter rechterhand der stad, die in het midden is van de beek van Gad, en aan Jaezer. 6Voorts kwamen zij in Gilead, en in het lage land Hodsi; ook kwamen zij tot Dan-Jaan, en rondom bij Sidon. 7En zij kwamen tot de vesting van Tyrus, en alle steden der Hevieten en der Kanaanieten; en zij kwamen uit aan het zuiden van Juda te Ber-seba. 8Alzo togen zij om door het ganse land; en ten einde van negen maanden en twintig dagen kwamen zij te Jeruzalem. 9En Joab gaf de som van het getelde volk aan den koning; en in Israel waren achthonderd duizend strijdbare mannen, die het zwaard uittrokken, en de mannen van Juda waren vijfhonderd duizend man. 10En Davids hart sloeg hem, nadat hij het volk geteld had; en David zeide tot den HEERE: Ik heb zeer gezondigd in hetgeen ik gedaan heb; maar nu, o HEERE, neem toch de misdaad Uws knechts weg, want ik heb zeer zottelijk gedaan. 11Als nu David des morgens opstond, zo geschiedde het woord des HEEREN tot den profeet Gad, Davids ziener, zeggende: 12Ga heen, en spreek tot David: Alzo zegt de HEERE: Drie dingen draag Ik u voor; verkies u een uit die, dat Ik u doe. 13Zo kwam Gad tot David, en maakte het hem bekend, en zeide tot hem: Zal u een honger van zeven jaren in uw land komen? Of wilt gij drie maanden vlieden voor het aangezicht uwer vijanden, dat die u vervolgen? Of dat er drie dagen pestilentie in uw land zij? Merk nu, en zie toe, wat antwoord ik Dien zal wederbrengen, Die mij gezonden heeft. 14Toen zeide David tot Gad: Mij is zeer bange; laat ons toch in de hand des HEEREN vallen, want Zijn barmhartigheden zijn vele, maar laat mij in de hand van mensen niet vallen. 15Toen gaf de HEERE een pestilentie in Israel, van den morgen af tot den gezetten tijd toe; en er stierven van het volk, van Dan tot Ber-seba toe, zeventig duizend mannen. 16Toen nu de engel zijn hand uitstrekte over Jeruzalem, om haar te verderven, berouwde het den HEERE over dat kwaad, en Hij zeide tot den engel, die het verderf onder het volk maakte: Het is genoeg, trek uw hand nu af. De engel des HEEREN nu was bij den dorsvloer van Arauna, den Jebusiet. 17En David, als hij den engel zag, die het volk sloeg, sprak tot den HEERE, en zeide: Zie ik, ik heb gezondigd, en ik, ik heb onrecht gehandeld, maar wat hebben deze schapen gedaan? Uw hand zij toch tegen mij en tegen mijns vaders huis. 18En Gad kwam tot David op dienzelfden dag, en zeide tot hem: Ga op, richt den HEERE een altaar op, op den dorsvloer van Arauna, den Jebusiet. 19Alzo ging David op naar het woord van Gad, gelijk als de HEERE geboden had. 20En Arauna zag toe, en zag den koning en zijn knechten tot zich overkomen; zo ging Arauna uit, en boog zich voor den koning met zijn aangezicht ter aarde. 21En Arauna zeide: Waarom komt mijn heer de koning tot zijn knecht? En David zeide: Om dezen dorsvloer van u te kopen, om den HEERE een altaar te bouwen, opdat deze plage opgehouden worde van over het volk. 22Toen zeide Arauna tot David: Mijn heer de koning neme en offere, wat goed is in zijn ogen; zie, daar de runderen ten brandoffer, en de sleden en het rundertuig tot hout. 23Dit alles gaf Arauna, de koning, aan den koning. Voorts zeide Arauna tot den koning: De HEERE uw God neme een welgevallen in u! 24Doch de koning zeide tot Arauna: Neen, maar ik zal het zekerlijk van u kopen voor den prijs; want ik zal den HEERE, mijn God, niet offeren brandofferen om niet. Alzo kocht David den dorsvloer en de runderen voor vijftig zilveren sikkelen. 25En David bouwde aldaar den HEERE een altaar, en offerde brandofferen en dankofferen. Alzo werd de HEERE den lande verbeden, en deze plage van over Israel opgehouden.
