1Cách ít lâu, Áp-sa-lôm sắm xe và ngựa với năm mươi quân chạy trước mặt mình. 2Áp-sa-lôm dậy sớm, đứng nơi mé đường vào cửa thành. Nếu gặp ai có sự kiện thưa chi đi đến vua đặng cầu xét đoán, thì Áp-sa-lôm gọi người ấy hỏi rằng: Người ở thành nào? Nếu họ đáp: Tôi tớ ông thuộc về chi phái kia của Y-sơ-ra-ên, 3thì Áp-sa-lôm tiếp rằng: Sự tình của ngươi thật phải và công bình; nhưng nơi đền vua nào có ai để nghe ngươi đâu. 4Ðoạn, Áp-sa-lôm tiếp rằng: Ồ! chớ chi người ta lập ta làm quan xét trong xứ! Phàm người nào có việc tranh tụng hay kiện cáo gì cần đoán xét, sẽ đến ta, thì ta sẽ xử đoán công bình cho họ. 5Nếu có ai đến gần đặng lạy người, Áp-sa-lôm giơ tay ra đỡ lấy người và hôn. 6Áp-sa-lôm làm như vậy đối cùng hết thảy những người Y-sơ-ra-ên đi đến tìm vua, đặng cầu đoán xét; và Áp-sa-lôm dụ lấy lòng người Y-sơ-ra-ên vậy. 7Cuối bốn năm, Áp-sa-lôm nói cùng vua rằng: Xin cho phép con đi đến Hếp-rôn đặng trả xong sự hứa nguyện mà tôi đã khấn với Ðức Giê-hô-va. 8Vì lúc tôi tớ vua ở tại Ghê-su-rơ trong Sy-ri, có khấn lời nguyện nầy: Nếu Ðức Giê-hô-va dẫn tôi về Giê-ru-sa-lem, thì tôi sẽ thờ phượng Ðức Giê-hô-va. 9Vua đáp cùng người rằng: Hãy đi bình an. Vậy người chổi dậy, và đi đến Hếp-rôn. 10Áp-sa-lôm sai những kẻ do thám rao lịnh nầy khắp trong các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Thoạt khi anh em nghe tiếng kèn, thì hãy nói: Áp-sa-lôm làm vua tại Hếp-rôn! 11Có hai trăm người ở Giê-ru-sa-lem mà Áp-sa-lôm đã mời, đều đi với người cách thật thà chẳng nghi ngại chi hết. 12Ðương lúc Áp-sa-lôm dâng của lễ, bèn sai mời A-hi-tô-phe, là mưu sĩ của Ða-vít ở Ghi-lô, bổn thành người. Sự phản nghịch trở nên mạnh, và đoàn dân đi theo Áp-sa-lôm cùng ngày càng đông. 13Có người đến báo tin cho Ða-vít rằng: Lòng của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nghiêng về Áp-sa-lôm. 14Ða-vít bèn nói cùng các tôi tớ ở với mình tại Giê-ru-sa-lem rằng: Hãy chổi dậy và chạy trốn đi, bằng chẳng, chúng ta không thế thoát khỏi Áp-sa-lôm được. Hãy đi mau mau, e nó sẽ đến kịp chúng ta, làm hại cho chúng ta, và dùng gươm diệt thành. 15Các tôi tớ của vua thưa rằng: Phàm việc gì vua chúa chúng tôi nhứt định, thì các tôi tớ vua sẽ sẵn làm theo. 16Vậy, vua ra đi, có cả nhà người cùng theo; nhưng vua để lại mười người cung phi đặng giữ đền. 17Thế thì, vua đi ra, có cả dân sự theo sau; chúng dừng lại tại nhà ở cuối chót thành. 18Hết thảy tôi tớ của vua và cả người Kê-rê-thít, người Phê-lê-thít đều đi ở bên vua, còn người Ghi-tít, số sáu trăm người ở Gát đến theo vua, đều đi đàng trước. 19Vua bèn nói cùng Y-tai, người Ghi-tít rằng: Cớ sao ngươi cũng muốn đến cùng chúng ta? Hãy trở lại, ở với vua, bởi vì ngươi là một người ngoại bang đã lìa xứ ngươi. 20Ngươi mới đến hôm qua, và hôm nay ta há sẽ cho ngươi lạc lài đây đó với chúng ta sao? Còn ta, ta đi đâu không rõ. Vậy, hãy trở về và dẫn các anh em ngươi theo ngươi. Nguyện sự thương xót và sự thành tín ở cùng ngươi! 21Nhưng Y-tai thưa cùng vua rằng: Tôi chỉ Ðức Giê-hô-va hằng sống, và chỉ mạng sống của vua chúa tôi mà thề, hễ vua chúa tôi ở đâu, hoặc trong sự chết, hoặc trong sự sống, thì kẻ tôi tớ vua cũng sẽ ở đó. 22Vua Ða-vít bèn nói với Y-tai rằng: Vậy, hãy đến đi trước. Thế thì, Y-tai người Ghi-tít cùng hết thảy con trẻ theo mình, và cả bọn người đều đi tới trước. 23Hết thảy dân trong xứ đều khóc và la lớn tiếng lên trong khi cả đám đông nầy đi qua. Vua qua khe Xết-rôn, và cả dân sự đều sơm tới trên con đường về đồng vắng. 24Ở đó cũng có Xa-đốc và hết thảy người Lê-vi khiêng hòm giao ước của Ðức Chúa Trời. Họ để hòm của Ðức Chúa Trời xuống đất, rồi A-bia-tha đi lên trước cho đến khi hết thảy dân sự đã ra khỏi thành xuống rồi. 25Vua bèn nói cùng Xa-đốc rằng: Hãy thỉnh hòm của Ðức Chúa Trời vào trong thành. Nếu ta được ơn trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, ắt Ngài sẽ đem ta về, cho ta thấy lại hòm giao ước và nơi ngự của Ngài. 26Nhưng nếu Ngài phán như vầy: Ta không ưa thích ngươi; thế thì, nguyện Ngài xử ta theo ý Ngài lấy làm tốt! 27Vua lại nói cùng thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc rằng: Nầy nghe, hãy trở về thành bình an, với A-bia-tha, A-hi-mát, và Giô-na-than, là hai con trai ngươi. 28Còn ta, ta sẽ đợi tại trong đồng bằng của sa mạc cho đến khi có kẻ bởi các ngươi đem tin báo cho ta. 29Ấy vậy, Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha thỉnh hòm của Ðức Chúa Trời về Giê-ru-sa-lem, và họ ở lại tại đó. 30Ða-vít trèo lên núi Ô-li-ve; người vừa leo lên vừa khóc, đầu trùm lại và chơn không. Hết thảy người đi theo cũng trùm đầu, vừa trèo lên vừa khóc. 31Người ta bèn đến nói cùng Ða-vít rằng: A-hi-tô-phe cũng hiệp đảng phản nghịch với Áp-sa-lôm. Ða-vít cầu rằng: Ôi, Ðức Giê-hô-va! xin làm cho những mưu chước của A-hi-tô-phe ra ngu dại. 32Khi Ða-vít đã đi đến chót núi, tại nơi người ta thờ lạy Ðức Chúa Trời, thì Hu-sai, người Aït-kít, đến đón người, áo xé rách và đầu đầy bụi đất. 33Ða-vít nói cùng người rằng: Nếu ngươi đến cùng ta, tất ngươi sẽ làm khó nhọc cho ta. 34Nhưng nếu ngươi trở về thành, và nói cùng Áp-sa-lôm rằng: Ôi vua! tôi là kẻ tôi tớ vua. Thuở trước tôi đã phục sự vua cha thể nào, bây giờ tôi sẽ phục sự vua thể ấy, vậy ngươi sẽ vì ta làm bại mưu chước của A-hi-tô-phe. 35Hai thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha sẽ đồng cùng ngươi. Phàm việc chi ngươi hay được về nhà vua, ngươi phải thuật cho hai thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha biết. 36Hai người có hai đứa con trai theo mình, là A-hi-mát, con trai của Xa-đốc, và Giô-na-than, con trai của A-bia-tha; các ngươi phải dùng chúng nó để báo tin cho ta mọi điều mình sẽ nghe thấy. 37Vậy, Hu-sai, bạn hữu của Ða-vít, trở về thành đương khi Áp-sa-lôm vào trong Giê-ru-sa-lem.
1After this, Absalom prepared him a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate. It was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, “What city are you from?” He said, “Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.” 3Absalom said to him, “Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized by the king to hear you.” 4Absalom said moreover, “Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!” 5It was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he stretched out his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. 6Absalom did this sort of thing to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. 7At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron. 8For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If Yahweh shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Yahweh.’” 9The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose, and went to Hebron. 10But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron!’” 11Two hundred men went with Absalom out of Jerusalem, who were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they didn’t know anything. 12Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom. 13A messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.” 14David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom. Make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.” 15The king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.” 16The king went out, and all his household after him. The king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house. 17The king went out, and all the people after him; and they stayed in Beth Merhak. 18All his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king. 19Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner, and also an exile. Return to your own place. 20Whereas you came but yesterday, should I this day make you go up and down with us, since I go where I may? Return, and take back your brothers. Mercy and truth be with you.” 21Ittai answered the king, and said, “As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall is, whether for death or for life, even there also will your servant be.” 22David said to Ittai, “Go and pass over.” Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones who were with him. 23All the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness. 24Behold, Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people finished passing out of the city. 25The king said to Zadok, “Carry back the ark of God into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of Yahweh, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation; 26but if he say thus, ‘I have no delight in you;’ behold, here am I. Let him do to me as seems good to him.” 27The king said also to Zadok the priest, “Aren’t you a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28Behold, I will stay at the fords of the wilderness, until word comes from you to inform me.” 29Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem; and they stayed there. 30David went up by the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people who were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. 31Someone told David, saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” David said, “Yahweh, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” 32When David had come to the top, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn, and earth on his head. 33David said to him, “If you pass on with me, then you will be a burden to me; 34but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father’s servant in time past, so will I now be your servant; then will you defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.’ 35Don’t you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore it shall be, that whatever thing you shall hear out of the king’s house, you shall tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send to me everything that you shall hear.” 37So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Dat alle man tot mij kwame, die een geschil of rechtzaak heeft, dat ik hem recht sprake. 5Het geschiedde ook, als iemand naderde, om zich voor hem te buigen, zo reikte hij zijn hand uit, en greep hem, en kuste hem. 6En naar die wijze deed Absalom aan gans Israel, die tot den koning ten gerichte kwamen. Alzo stal Absalom het hart der mannen van Israel. 7Ten einde nu van veertig jaren is het geschied, dat Absalom tot den koning zeide: Laat mij toch heengaan, en mijn gelofte, die ik den HEERE beloofd heb, te Hebron betalen. 8Want uw knecht heeft een gelofte beloofd, als ik te Gesur in Syrie woonde, zeggende: Indien de HEERE mij zekerlijk weder te Jeruzalem zal brengen, zo zal ik den HEERE dienen. 9Toen zeide de koning tot hem: Ga in vrede. Alzo maakte hij zich op, en ging naar Hebron. 10Absalom nu had verspieders uitgezonden in alle stammen van Israel, om te zeggen: Als gij het geluid der bazuin zult horen, zo zult gij zeggen: Absalom is koning te Hebron. 11En er gingen met Absalom van Jeruzalem tweehonderd mannen, genodigd zijnde, doch gaande in hun eenvoudigheid, want zij wisten van geen zaak. 12Absalom zond ook om Achitofel, den Giloniet, Davids raad, uit zijn stad, uit Gilo te halen, als hij offeranden offerde. En de verbintenis werd sterk, en het volk kwam toe en vermeerderde bij Absalom. 13Toen kwam er een boodschapper tot David, zeggende: Het hart van een iegelijk in Israel volgt Absalom na. 14Zo zeide David tot al zijn knechten, die met hem te Jeruzalem waren: Maakt u op, en laat ons vlieden, want er zou voor ons geen ontkomen zijn voor Absaloms aangezicht; haast u, om weg te gaan, opdat hij niet misschien haaste, en ons achterhale, en een kwaad over ons drijve, en deze stad sla met de scherpte des zwaards. 15Toen zeiden de knechten des konings tot den koning: Naar alles, wat mijn heer de koning verkiezen zal, ziet, hier zijn uw knechten. 16En de koning ging uit met zijn ganse huis te voet; doch de koning liet tien bijwijven, om het huis te bewaren. 17Als nu de koning met al het volk te voet was uitgegaan, zo bleven zij staan in een verre plaats. 18En al zijn knechten gingen aan zijn zijde heen, ook al de Krethi en al de Plethi, en al de Gethieten, zeshonderd man, die van Gath te voet gekomen waren, gingen voor des konings aangezicht heen. 19Zo zeide de koning tot Ithai, den Gethiet: Waarom zoudt gij ook met ons gaan? Keer weder, en blijf bij den koning; want gij zijt vreemd, en ook zult gij weder vertrekken naar uw plaats. 20Gisteren zijt gij gekomen, en heden zou ik u met ons omvoeren om te gaan? Zo ik toch gaan moet, waarheen ik gaan kan, keer weder; en breng uw broederen wederom; weldadigheid en trouw zij met u. 21Maar Ithai antwoordde den koning, en zeide: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, en mijn heer de koning leeft, in de plaats, waar mijn heer de koning zal zijn, hetzij ten dode, hetzij ten leven, daar zal uw knecht voorzeker ook zijn! 22Toen zeide David tot Ithai: Zo kom, en ga over. Alzo ging Ithai, de Gethiet, over, en al zijn mannen, en al de kinderen die met hem waren. 23En het ganse land weende met luider stem, als al het volk overging; ook ging de koning over de beek Kidron, en al het volk ging over, recht naar den weg der woestijn. 24En ziet, Zadok was ook daar, en al de Levieten met hem, dragende de ark des verbonds van God, en zij zetten de ark Gods neder; en Abjathar klom op, totdat al het volk uit de stad geeindigd had over te gaan. 25Toen zeide de koning tot Zadok: Breng de ark Gods weder in de stad; indien ik genade zal vinden in des HEEREN ogen, zo zal Hij mij wederhalen, en zal ze mij laten zien, mitsgaders Zijn woning. 26Maar indien Hij alzo zal zeggen: Ik heb geen lust tot u; zie, hier ben ik, Hij doe mij, zo als het in Zijn ogen goed is. 27Voorts zeide de koning tot den priester Zadok: Zijt gij niet een ziener? Keer weder in de stad met vrede; ook ulieder beide zonen, Ahimaaz, uw zoon, en Jonathan, Abjathars zoon, met u. 28Zie, ik zal vertoeven in de vlakke velden der woestijn, totdat er een woord van ulieden kome, dat men mij aanzegge. 29Alzo bracht Zadok, en Abjathar, de ark Gods weder te Jeruzalem, en zij bleven aldaar. 30En David ging op door den opgang der olijven, opgaande en wenende, en het hoofd was hem bewonden; en hij zelf ging barrevoets; ook had al het volk, dat met hem was, een iegelijk zijn hoofd bedekt, en zij gingen op, opgaande en wenende. 31Toen gaf men David te kennen, zeggende: Achitofel is onder degenen, die zich met Absalom hebben verbonden. Dies zeide David: O, HEERE! maak toch Achitofels raad tot zotheid. 32En het geschiedde, als David tot op de hoogte kwam, dat hij aldaar God aanbad; ziet, toen ontmoette hem Husai, de Archiet, hebbende zijn rok gescheurd, en aarde op zijn hoofd. 33En David zeide tot hem: Zo gij met mij voortgaat, zo zult gij mij tot een last zijn; 34Maar zo gij weder in de stad gaat, en tot Absalom zegt: Uw knecht, ik zal des konings zijn; ik ben wel uws vaders knecht van te voren geweest, maar nu zal ik uw knecht zijn; zo zoudt gij mij den raad van Achitofel te niet maken. 35En zijn niet Zadok en Abjathar, de priesters, aldaar met u? Zo zal het geschieden, dat gij alle ding, dat gij uit des konings huis zult horen, den priesteren, Zadok en Abjathar, zult te kennen geven. 36Ziet, hun beide zonen zijn aldaar bij hen, Ahimaaz, Zadoks, en Jonathan, Abjathars zoon; zo zult gijlieden door hun hand tot mij zenden alle ding, dat gij zult horen. 37Alzo kwam Husai, Davids vriend, in de stad; en Absalom kwam te Jeruzalem.
