1Khi Giô-si-a lên làm vua, được tám tuổi; người cai trị ba mươi mốt năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Mẹ người tên là Giê-đi-đa, con gái của A-đa-gia, cháu Bô-cát. 2Người làm điều thiện trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, đi theo trọn con đường của Ða-vít, tổ phụ mình, không tẻ tách hoặc về bên hữu, hoặc về bên tả. 3Năm thứ mười tám đời Giô-si-a, vua sai thơ ký Sa-phan, con trai A-xa-lia, cháu Mê-su-lam, đến đền Ðức Giê-hô-va, mà dặn rằng: 4Hãy đi lên thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm Hinh-kia, đếm bạc đã đem đến trong đền thờ của Ðức Giê-hô-va, tức là bạc mà các người giữ cửa đền thờ đã thâu lấy nơi dân sự; 5đoạn hãy giao bạc ấy cho những kẻ coi sóc việc đền thờ của Ðức Giê-hô-va, để họ giao lại cho thợ sửa sang các nơi hư nứt của đền thờ, 6tức thợ mộc, thợ xây cất, thợ hồ, và dùng mua gỗ và đá đẽo đặng tu bổ đền lại. 7Song chớ tính sổ bạc giao nơi tay chúng, vì chúng vốn làm thành thực. 8Thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm Hinh-kia nói với thơ ký Sa-phan rằng: Tôi đã tìm được quyển luật pháp trong đền thờ Ðức Giê-hô-va. Hinh-kia trao quyển sách đó cho Sa-phan, và người đọc nó. 9Ðoạn, thơ ký Sa-phan đến tìm vua, thuật lại điều này mà rằng: Các tôi tớ vua đã đóng bạc tìm đặng trong đền thờ, và đã giao nơi tay các người lo coi sóc công việc đền thờ của Ðức Giê-hô-va. 10Thơ ký Sa-phan lại nói rằng: Thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm Hinh-kia có trao cho tôi một quyển sách; đoạn, Sa-phan đọc sách đó trước mặt vua. 11Vua vừa nghe các lời của sách luật pháp, liền xé quần áo mình. 12Ðoạn, vua truyền lịnh cho thầy tế lễ Hinh-kia, cho A-hi-ca, con trai Sa-phan, cho Aïc-bồ, con trai Mi-ca-gia, đầy tớ của vua, mà rằng: 13Hãy đi cầu vấn Ðức Giê-hô-va cho ta, cho dân sự, và cho cả Giu-đa, về các lời của sách mới tìm được. Vì cơn giận của Ðức Giê-hô-va nổi lên cùng chúng ta thật là lớn lao, tại tổ phụ chúng ta không có nghe theo các lời của sách này, và không làm theo điều đã đã truyền phán cho chúng ta. 14Vậy, thầy tế lễ Hinh-kia, A-hi-cam, Aïc-bồ, Sa-phan, và A-sa-gia đi tìm nữ tiên tri Hun-đa, vợ của Sa-lum, người giữ áo lễ, con trai của Tiếc-va, cháu của Hạt-ha; người ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, trong quận thứ nhì. Chúng nói chuyện với nàng, 15nàng bèn nói rằng: Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên nói như vầy: Hãy nói với người sai các ngươi đến ta rằng: 16Ðức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Ta sẽ dẫn tai họa trên chỗ này và trên dân cư nó, làm hoàn thành mọi lời của sách mà vua Giu-đa đã đọc. 17Bởi vì dân Giu-đa đã lìa bỏ ta, đốt hương cho các thần khác, chọc giận vì các công việc của tay chúng nó, nên cơn giận ta sẽ nổi lên cùng chỗ này, không hề nguôi. 18Còn về vua Giu-đa đã sai các người cầu vấn Ðức Giê-hô-va, thì hãy nói với người rằng: Về các lời người đã nghe Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán như vầy: 19Khi ngươi nghe lời ta phán nghịch cùng chỗ này, và nghịch cùng dân cư nó rằng, chỗ này sẽ bị phá hoang, dân cư trở thành rủa sả, thì ngươi có lòng mềm mại, hạ mình xuống trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, xé quần áo mình, và khóc lóc trước mặt ta; bởi vậy cho nên ta cũng có nghe ngươi. 20Kìa, ta sẽ thâu ngươi về cùng các tổ phụ ngươi; và ngươi sẽ được thâu vào nơi mồ mả ngươi cách bình an, và mắt ngươi sẽ chẳng thấy những điều tai họa mà ta toàn giáng xuống trên chỗ này. Chúng bèn tâu lại cho vua những lời ấy.
1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in all the way of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3In the eighteenth year of king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to Yahweh’s house, saying, 4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into Yahweh’s house, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people. 5Let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and let them give it to the workmen who are in Yahweh’s house, to repair the breaches of the house, 6to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house. 7However there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.” 8Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house.” 10Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Shaphan read it before the king. 11When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. 12The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.” 14So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her. 15She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 16“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read. 17Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’” 18But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Concerning the words which you have heard, 19because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh. 20‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” They brought back this message to the king.

En Safan las dat voor het aangezicht des konings. 11Het geschiedde nu, als de koning de woorden des wetboeks hoorde, dat hij zijn klederen scheurde. 12En de koning gebood Hilkia, den priester, en Ahikam, den zoon van Safan, en Achbor, den zoon van Michaja, en Safan, den schrijver, en Asaja, den knecht des konings, zeggende: 13Gaat henen, vraagt den HEERE voor mij, en voor het volk, en voor het ganse Juda, over de woorden dezes boeks, dat gevonden is; want de grimmigheid des HEEREN is groot, dewelke tegen ons aangestoken is, omdat onze vaderen niet gehoord hebben naar de woorden dezes boeks, om te doen naar al wat voor ons geschreven is. 14Toen ging de priester Hilkia, en Ahikam, en Achbor, en Safan, en Asaja henen tot de profetes Hulda, de huisvrouw van Sallum, den zoon van Tikva, den zoon van Harhas, den klederbewaarder (zij nu woonde te Jeruzalem, in het tweede deel), en zij spraken tot haar. 15En zij zeide tot hen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Zegt tot den man, die u tot mij gezonden heeft: 16Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over deze plaats brengen, en voer haar inwoners, namelijk al de woorden des boeks, dat de koning van Juda gelezen heeft. 17Daarom dat zij Mij verlaten, en anderen goden gerookt hebben, opdat zij Mij tot toorn verwekten met al het werk hunner handen, zo zal Mijn grimmigheid aangestoken worden, tegen deze plaats, en niet uitgeblust worden. 18Maar tot den koning van Juda, die u gezonden heeft, om den HEERE te vragen, alzo zult gij tot hem zeggen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Aangaande de woorden, die gij gehoord hebt; 19Omdat uw hart week geworden is, en gij u voor het aangezicht des HEEREN vernederd hebt, als gij hoordet, wat Ik gesproken heb tegen deze plaats en derzelver inwoners, dat zij tot een verwoesting en vloek zullen worden, en dat gij uw klederen gescheurd en voor Mijn aangezicht geweend hebt; zo heb Ik u ook verhoord, spreekt de HEERE. 20Daarom zie, Ik zal u verzamelen tot uw vaderen, en gij zult met vrede in uw graf verzameld worden, en uw ogen zullen al het kwaad niet zien, dat Ik over deze plaats brengen zal. En zij brachten den koning het antwoord weder.
