Bởi cớ đó, San-chê-ríp lại sai sứ giả đến Ê-xê-chia, và dặn rằng: 10Các ngươi hãy nói như vầy với Ê-xê-chia, vua Giu-đa, mà rằng: Chớ để cho Ðức Chúa Trời, là Ðấng ngươi nhờ cậy, phỉnh gạt ngươi, mà nói rằng: Giê-ru-sa-lem sẽ chẳng bị sa vào tay vua A-si-ri. 11Kìa, người đã hay những việc các vua A-si-ri đã làm cho các xứ mà diệt đi hết thảy: còn ngươi, sẽ thoát khỏi nào! 12Các thần của những dân tộc mà tổ phụ ta đã tuyệt diệt, há có giải cứu chúng chăng, là các thần của Gô-xa, Ha-ran, Rết-sép, và dân Ê-đen, ở tại Tê-la-sa? 13Vua Ha-mát, vua Aït-bát, vua thành Sê-phạt-va-im, vua Hê-na, và vua Y-va, đều ở đâu? 14Ê-xê-chia tiếp đặng thơ ở nơi tay các sứ giả, bèn đọc. Cầu Chúa hãy nghe các lời mà San-chê-ríp sai nói, đặng phỉ báng Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống. 17Ðức Giê-hô-va ôi! quả thật các vua A-si-ri đã diệt các dân tộc, và phá hoang địa phận chúng nó, 18ném các thần chúng nó vào lửa; nhưng chẳng phải là thần, chẳng qua là công việc của tay người ta làm ra bằng gỗ và bằng đá; nên chúng hủy diệt các thần ấy. 19Vậy bây giờ, hỡi Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của chúng tôi ôi! hãy giải cứu chúng tôi khỏi tay San-chê-ríp, hầu cho muôn nước trên đất biết rằng chỉ một mình Giê-hô-va là Ðức Chúa Trời. 20Ê-sai, con trai A-mốt, sai nói với Ê-xê-chia rằng: Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán như vầy: Ta có nghe lời ngươi cầu nguyện cùng ta về việc San-chê-ríp, vua A-si-ri. 21Này là lời Ðức Giê-hô-va đã phán về hắn. Gái đồng trinh Si-ôn khinh dể, chê cười ngươi; con gái Giê-ru-sa-lem đã lắc đầu theo ngươi. 22Ngươi phỉ báng và sỉ nhục ai? Cất tiếng lên cùng ai? Thật ngươi đã trừng con mắt nghịch với Ðấng Thánh của Y-sơ-ra-ên! 23Ngươi đã nhờ các sứ giả mình nhạo báng Chúa, mà rằng: Ta đem nhiều xe, lên chót núi, đến đỉnh rất xa của Li-ban; ta sẽ đốn những cay bá hương cao hơn hết, và cây tòng tốt nhất của nó; ta sẽ đến cõi xa hơn hết, tức rừng rậm của nó. 24Ta đã đào giếng, uống nước của đất lạ; dưới bàn chơn ta sẽ làm cạn sông Ê-díp-tô. 25Sự này ta đã làm từ lâu, việc này ta đã định từ thời cổ, ngươi há chẳng nghe đến sao? Sáng ngày mai, người ta thức dậy, bèn thấy quân ấy, kìa, chỉ là thây đó thôi. 36San-chê-ríp, vua A-si-ri, bèn trở về, ở tại Ni-ni-ve. 37Một ngày kia, người thờ lạy tại trong chùa Nít-róc, thần của mình, thì A-tra-mê-léc và Sa-rết-se giết người bằng gươm, đoạn chúng nó trốn trong xứ A-ra-rát. Ê-sạt-ha-đôn, con trai người, kế vị người.
1When king Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh’s house. 2He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them. 4It may be Yahweh your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall tell your master, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’” 8So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish. 9When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, 10‘Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, “Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?”’” 14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to Yahweh’s house, and spread it before Yahweh. 15Hezekiah prayed before Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sit above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16Incline your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent to defy the living God. 17Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them. 19Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Yahweh, are God alone.” 20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard you. 21This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him: “The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. 22Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel. 23By your messengers you have defied the Lord, and have said, ‘With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field. 24I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.’ 25Haven’t you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now have I brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. 26Therefore their inhabitants were of small power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like grain blasted before it has grown up. 27But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me. 28Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.” 29“‘This shall be the sign to you: You shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat its fruit. 30The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 31For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The zeal of Yahweh will perform this.’ 32“Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. 33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city,’ says Yahweh. 34‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’” 35That night, Yahweh’s angel went out, and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh. 37As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

Uw ogen open en zie, en hoor de woorden van Sanherib, die dezen gezonden heeft, om den levenden God te honen. 17Waarlijk, HEERE, hebben de koningen van Assyrie die heidenen en hun land verwoest; 18En hebben hun goden in het vuur geworpen; want zij waren geen goden, maar het werk van mensenhanden, hout en steen; daarom hebben zij die verdorven. 19Nu dan, HEERE, onze God, verlos ons toch uit zijn hand; zo zullen alle koninkrijken der aarde weten, dat Gij, HEERE, alleen God zijt. 20Toen zond Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz, tot Hizkia, zeggende: Zo spreekt de HEERE, de God Israels: Dat gij tot Mij gebeden hebt tegen Sanherib, den koning van Assyrie, heb Ik gehoord. 21Dit is het woord, dat de HEERE over hem gesproken heeft: De jonkvrouw, de dochter van Sion, veracht u, zij bespot u, de dochter van Jeruzalem schudt het hoofd achter u. 22Wien hebt gij gehoond en gelasterd? en tegen Wien hebt gij de stem verheven, en uw ogen omhoog opgeheven? Tegen den Heilige Israels! 23Door middel uwer boden hebt gij den HEERE gehoond, en gezegd: Ik heb met de menigte mijner wagenen beklommen de hoogten der bergen, de zijden van den Libanon; en ik zal zijn hoge cederbomen, en zijn uitgelezen dennebomen afhouwen; en zal komen in zijn uiterste herberg, in het woud zijns schonen velds. 24Ik heb gegraven en heb gedronken vreemde wateren; en ik heb met mijn voetzolen alle rivieren der belegerde plaatsen verdroogd. 25Hebt gij niet gehoord, dat Ik zulks lang te voren gedaan heb en dat van oude dagen af geformeerd heb? Nu heb Ik dat doen komen, dat gij zoudt zijn, om de vaste steden te verstoren tot woeste hopen. 26Daarom waren haar inwoners handeloos; zij waren verslagen en beschaamd; zij waren als het gras des velds, en de groene grasscheutjes, het hooi der daken, en het brandkoren, eer het over einde staat. 27Maar Ik weet uw zitten, en uw uitgaan, en uw inkomen, en uw woeden tegen Mij. 28Om uw woeden tegen Mij, en dat uw woeling voor Mijn oren opgekomen is, zo Mijn gebit in uw lippen, en Ik zal u doen wederkeren door dien weg, door denwelken gij gekomen zijt. 29En dat zij u een teken, dat men in dit jaar eten zal, wat van zelf gewassen is; en in het tweede jaar, wat daarvan weder uitspruit; maar zaait in het derde jaar, en maait, en plant wijngaarden, en eet hun vruchten. 30Want het ontkomene, dat overgebleven is van het huis van Juda, zal wederom nederwaarts wortelen, en zal opwaarts vrucht dragen. 31Want van Jeruzalem zal het overblijfsel uitgaan, en het ontkomene van den berg Sion; de ijver van den HEERE der heirscharen zal dit doen. 32Daarom zo zegt de HEERE van den koning van Assyrie: Hij zal in deze stad niet komen, noch daar een pijl inschieten; ook zal hij met geen schild daarvoor komen, en zal geen wal daartegen opwerpen. 33Door den weg, dien hij gekomen is, door dien zal hij wederkeren; maar in deze stad zal hij niet komen, zegt de HEERE. 34Want Ik zal deze stad beschermen, om die te verlossen, om Mijnentwil, en om Davids, Mijns knechts wil. 35Het geschiedde dan in dienzelven nacht, dat de Engel des HEEREN uitvoer, en sloeg in het leger van Assyrie honderd vijf en tachtig duizend. En toen zij zich des morgens vroeg opmaakten, ziet, die allen waren dode lichamen. 36Zo vertrok Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, en toog henen, en keerde weder; en hij bleef te Nineve. 37Het geschiedde nu, als hij in het huis van Nisroch, zijn god, zich nederboog, dat Adramelech en Sarezer, zijn zonen, hem met het zwaard versloegen; doch zij ontkwamen in het land van Ararat; en Esar-Haddon, zijn zoon, werd koning in zijn plaats.
