1Hỡi kẻ rất yêu dấu, chớ tin cậy mọi thần, nhưng hãy thử cho biết các thần có phải đến bởi Ðức Chúa Trời chăng; vì có nhiều tiên tri giả đã hiện ra trong thiên hạ. 2Bởi điều nầy, hãy nhận biết Thánh Linh của Ðức Chúa Trời: phàm thần nào xưng Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ lấy xác thịt mà ra đời, thần đó là bởi Ðức Chúa Trời; 3còn thần nào không xưng Ðức Chúa Jêsus, chẳng phải bởi Ðức Chúa Trời. Ðó là thần của Kẻ địch lại Ðấng Christ, mà các con đã nghe rằng hầu đến, và hiện nay đã ở trong thế gian rồi. 4Hỡi các con cái bé mọn, phần các con, là thuộc về Ðức Chúa Trời, đã thắng được họ rồi, vì Ðấng ở trong các con là lớn hơn kẻ ở trong thế gian. 5Họ thuộc về thế gian, cho nên nói theo như thế gian, và người thế gian nghe họ. 6Chúng ta thuộc về Ðức Chúa Trời: ai nhìn biết Ðức Chúa Trời thì nghe chúng ta; còn ai chẳng hề thuộc về Ðức Chúa Trời, thì chẳng nghe chúng ta. Ấy bởi đó chúng ta nhìn biết thần chân thật và thần sai lầm. 7Hỡi kẻ rất yêu dấu, chúng ta hãy yêu mến lẫn nhau; vì sự yêu thương đến từ Ðức Chúa Trời, kẻ nào yêu, thì sanh từ Ðức Chúa Trời và nhìn biết Ðức Chúa Trời. 8Ai chẳng yêu, thì không biết Ðức Chúa Trời; vì Ðức Chúa Trời là sự yêu thương. 9Lòng Ðức Chúa Trời yêu chúng ta đã bày tỏ ra trong điều nầy: Ðức Chúa Trời đã sai Con một Ngài đến thế gian, đặng chúng ta nhờ Con được sống. 10Nầy sự yêu thương ở tại đây: ấy chẳng phải chúng ta đã yêu Ðức Chúa Trời, nhưng Ngài đã yêu chúng ta, và sai Con Ngài làm của lễ chuộc tội chúng ta. 11Hỡi kẻ rất yêu dấu, nếu Ðức Chúa Trời đã yêu chúng ta dường ấy, thì chúng ta cũng phải yêu nhau. 12Chưa hề có ai thấy Ðức Chúa Trời; nếu chúng ta yêu nhau, thì Ðức Chúa Trời ở trong chúng ta, và sự yêu mến Ngài được trọn vẹn trong chúng ta. 13Bởi điều nầy chúng ta biết mình ở trong Ngài và Ngài ở trong chúng ta, là Ngài đã ban Thánh Linh Ngài cho chúng ta. 14Chúng ta lại đã thấy và làm chứng rằng Ðức Chúa Cha đã sai Ðức Chúa Con đặng làm Cứu Chúa thế gian. 15Ví bằng có ai xưng Ðức Chúa Jêsus là Con Ðức Chúa Trời, thì Ðức Chúa Trời ở trong người, và người ở trong Ðức Chúa Trời. 16Chúng ta đã biết và tin sự yêu thương của Ðức Chúa Trời đối với chúng ta. Ðức Chúa Trời tức là sự yêu thương, ai ở trong sự yêu thương, là ở trong Ðức Chúa Trời, và Ðức Chúa Trời ở trong người ấy. 17Nầy vì sao mà sự yêu thương được nên trọn vẹn trong chúng ta, hầu cho chúng ta được lòng mạnh bạo trong ngày xét đoán, ấy là Chúa thể nào thì chúng ta cũng thể ấy trong thế gian nầy. 18Quyết chẳng có điều sợ hãi trong sự yêu thương, nhưng sự yêu thương trọn vẹn thì cắt bỏ sự sợ hãi; vì sự sợ hãi có hình phạt, và kẻ đã sợ hãi thì không được trọn vẹn trong sự yêu thương. 19Chúng ta yêu, vì Chúa đã yêu chúng ta trước. 20Vì có ai nói rằng: Ta yêu Ðức Chúa Trời, mà lại ghét anh em mình, thì là kẻ nói dối; vì kẻ nào chẳng yêu anh em mình thấy, thì không thể yêu Ðức Chúa Trời mình chẳng thấy được. 21Chúng ta đã nhận nơi Ngài điều răn nầy: Ai yêu Ðức Chúa Trời, thì cũng phải yêu anh em mình.

1Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already. 4You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. 5They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them. 6We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn’t listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God. 8He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love. 9By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us. 13By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God. 16We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. 19We love him, because he first loved us. 20If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.

1Geliefden, gelooft niet een iegelijken geest, maar beproeft de geesten, of zij uit God zijn; want vele valse profeten zijn uitgegaan in de wereld. 2Hieraan kent gij den Geest van God: alle geest, die belijdt, dat Jezus Christus in het vlees gekomen is, die is uit God; 3En alle geest, die niet belijdt, dat Jezus Christus in het vlees gekomen is, die is uit God niet; maar dit is de geest van den antichrist, welken geest gij gehoord hebt, dat komen zal, en is nu alrede in de wereld. 4Kinderkens, gij zijt uit God, en hebt hen overwonnen; want Hij is meerder, Die in u is, dan die in de wereld is. 5Zij zijn uit de wereld, daarom spreken zij uit de wereld, en de wereld hoort hen. 6Wij zijn uit God. Die God kent, hoort ons; die uit God niet is, hoort ons niet. Hieruit kennen wij den geest der waarheid, en den geest der dwaling. 7Geliefden! Laat ons elkander liefhebben, want de liefde is uit God; en een iegelijk, die liefheeft, is uit God geboren, en kent God; 8Die niet liefheeft, die heeft God niet gekend; want God is liefde. 9Hierin is de liefde Gods jegens ons geopenbaard, dat God Zijn eniggeboren Zoon gezonden heeft in de wereld, opdat wij zouden leven door Hem. 10Hierin is de liefde, niet dat wij God liefgehad hebben, maar dat Hij ons lief heeft gehad, en Zijn Zoon gezonden heeft tot een verzoening voor onze zonden. 11Geliefden, indien God ons alzo lief heeft gehad, zo zijn ook wij schuldig elkander lief te hebben. 12Niemand heeft ooit God aanschouwd; indien wij elkander liefhebben, zo blijft God in ons, en Zijn liefde is in ons volmaakt. 13Hieraan kennen wij, dat wij in Hem blijven, en Hij in ons, omdat Hij ons van Zijn Geest gegeven heeft. 14En wij hebben het aanschouwd, en getuigen, dat de Vader Zijn Zoon gezonden heeft tot een Zaligmaker der wereld. 15Zo wie beleden zal hebben, dat Jezus de Zoon van God is, God blijft in hem, en hij in God. 16En wij hebben gekend en geloofd de liefde, die God tot ons heeft. God is liefde; en die in de liefde blijft, blijft in God, en God in hem. 17Hierin is de liefde bij ons volmaakt, opdat wij vrijmoedigheid mogen hebben in den dag des oordeels, namelijk dat gelijk Hij is, wij ook zijn in deze wereld. 18Er is in de liefde geen vrees, maar de volmaakte liefde drijft de vrees buiten; want de vrees heeft pijn, en die vreest, is niet volmaakt in de liefde. 19Wij hebben Hem lief, omdat Hij ons eerst liefgehad heeft. 20Indien iemand zegt: Ik heb God lief; en haat zijn broeder, die is een leugenaar; want die zijn broeder niet liefheeft, dien hij gezien heeft, hoe kan hij God liefhebben, Dien hij niet gezien heeft? 21En dit gebod hebben wij van Hem, namelijk dat die God liefheeft, ook zijn broeder liefhebbe.
