1Ðiều có từ trước hết, là điều chúng tôi đã nghe, điều mắt chúng tôi đã thấy, điều chúng tôi đã ngắm và tay chúng tôi đã rờ, về lời sự sống; 2vì sự sống đã bày tỏ ra, chúng tôi có thấy, và đang làm chứng cho, chúng tôi rao truyền cho anh em sự sống đời đời vốn ở cùng Ðức Chúa Cha và đã bày tỏ ra cho chúng tôi rồi; 3chúng tôi lấy điều đã thấy đã nghe mà truyền cho anh em, hầu cho anh em cũng được giao thông với chúng tôi. Vả, chúng tôi vẫn được giao thông với Ðức Chúa Cha, và với Con Ngài là Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ. 4Chúng tôi viết những điều đó cho anh em, hầu cho sự vui mừng của chúng tôi được đầy dẫy. 5Nầy là lời truyền giảng mà chúng tôi đã nghe nơi Ngài và truyền lại cho anh em rằng Ðức Chúa Trời là sự sáng, trong Ngài chẳng có sự tối tăm đâu. 6Ví bằng chúng ta nói mình được giao thông với Ngài, mà còn đi trong sự tối tăm, ấy là chúng ta nói dối và không làm theo lẽ thật. 7Nhưng, nếu chúng ta đi trong sự sáng cũng như chính mình Ngài ở trong sự sáng, thì chúng ta giao thông cùng nhau; và huyết của Ðức Chúa Jêsus, Con Ngài, làm sạch mọi tội chúng ta. 8Ví bằng chúng ta nói mình không có tội chi hết, ấy là chính chúng ta lừa dối mình, và lẽ thật không ở trong chúng ta. 9Còn nếu chúng ta xưng tội mình, thì Ngài là thành tín công bình để tha tội cho chúng ta, và làm cho chúng ta sạch mọi điều gian ác. 10Nhược bằng chúng ta nói mình chẳng từng phạm tội, ấy là chúng ta cho Ngài là kẻ nói dối, lời Ngài không ở trong chúng ta.

1That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we saw, and our hands touched, concerning the Word of life 2(and the life was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us); 3that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us. Yes, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4And we write these things to you, that our joy may be fulfilled. 5This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and don’t tell the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we haven’t sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1Hetgeen van den beginne was, hetgeen wij gehoord hebben, hetgeen wij gezien hebben met onze ogen, hetgeen wij aanschouwd hebben, en onze handen getast hebben, van het Woord des levens; 2(Want het Leven is geopenbaard, en wij hebben het gezien, en wij getuigen, en verkondigen ulieden dat eeuwige Leven, Hetwelk bij den Vader was, en ons is geopenbaard.) 3Hetgeen wij dan gezien en gehoord hebben, dat verkondigen wij u, opdat ook gij met ons gemeenschap zoudt hebben, en deze onze gemeenschap ook zij met den Vader, en met Zijn Zoon Jezus Christus. 4En deze dingen schrijven wij u, opdat uw blijdschap vervuld zij. 5En dit is de verkondiging, die wij van Hem gehoord hebben, en wij u verkondigen, dat God een Licht is, en gans geen duisternis in Hem is. 6Indien wij zeggen, dat wij gemeenschap met Hem hebben, en wij in de duisternis wandelen, zo liegen wij, en doen de waarheid niet. 7Maar indien wij in het licht wandelen, gelijk Hij in het licht is, zo hebben wij gemeenschap met elkander, en het bloed van Jezus Christus, Zijn Zoon, reinigt ons van alle zonde. 8Indien wij zeggen, dat wij geen zonde hebben, zo verleiden wij ons zelven, en de waarheid is in ons niet. 9Indien wij onze zonden belijden, Hij is getrouw en rechtvaardig, dat Hij ons de zonden vergeve, en ons reinige van alle ongerechtigheid. 10Indien wij zeggen, dat wij niet gezondigd hebben, zo maken wij Hem tot een leugenaar, en Zijn woord is niet in ons.
