1Quem é semelhante ao sábio? E quem sabe a interpretação das coisas? A sabedoria do homem faz seu rosto brilhar, e a dureza de seu rosto é alterada. 2Eu digo: obedece às ordens do rei, por causa do juramento que fizeste a Deus. 3Não te apresses de sair da presença dele, nem persistas em alguma coisa má; pois tudo que ele deseja, ele faz. 4Naquilo que há a palavra do rei, ali há autoridade; e quem lhe dirá: O que estás fazendo? 5Quem obedecer ao mandamento não experimentará mal algum; e o coração do sábio sabe a hora e a maneira corretas . 6Porque para todo propósito há uma hora e uma maneira correta ; por isso o mal do homem é muito sobre ele: 7Pois ele não sabe o que irá acontecer. Quem pode lhe avisar o que vai acontecer, e quando? 8Não há homem nenhum que tenha domínio sobre o espírito, para reter ao espírito; nem tem domínio sobre dia da morte, nem meios de escapar d esta guerra; nem a perversidade livrará a seus donos. 9Tudo isto vi quando fiz coração considerar toda obra que se faz abaixo do sol: há um tempo em que um homem passa a dominar outro homem, para sua própria ruína. 10Também assim vi os perversos sepultados, e vinham, e saíam do lugar santo; e eles foram esquecidos na cidade em que assim fizeram; isso também é futilidade. 11Dado que o julgamento pela obra má não é feito imediatamente, por causa disso o coração dos filhos dos homens está cheio de vontade neles, para fazer o mal. 12Ainda que um pecador faça o mal cem vezes e sua vida se prolongue, mesmo assim eu sei, que as coisas boas acontecerão aos que temem a Deus, aos que temerem diante da sua face. 13Porém ao perverso não sucederá o bem, e não prolongará seus dias, que serão como uma sombra, pois ele não tem temor diane de Deus. 14Há outra futilidade que é feita sobre a terra: que há justos a quem acontece conforme as obras dos perversos, e há perversos a quem acontece conforme as obras dos justos. 1Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed. 2I say, “Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God. 3Don’t be hasty to go out of his presence. Don’t persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him, 4for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him, “What are you doing?” 5Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure. 6For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him. 7For he doesn’t know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be? 8There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it. 9All this have I seen, and applied my mind to every work that is done under the sun. There is a time in which one man has power over another to his hurt. 10So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holiness. They went and were forgotten in the city where they did this. This also is vanity. 11Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. 12Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him. 13But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow; because he doesn’t fear God. 14There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. 15Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun. 16When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes), 17then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.

Dit is ook ijdelheid. 11Omdat niet haastelijk het oordeel over de boze daad geschiedt, daarom is het hart van de kinderen der mensen in hen vol om kwaad te doen. 12Hoewel een zondaar honderd maal kwaad doet, en God hem de dagen verlengt; zo weet ik toch, dat het dien zal welgaan, die God vrezen, die voor Zijn aangezicht vrezen. 13Maar den goddeloze zal het niet welgaan, en hij zal de dagen niet verlengen; hij zal zijn gelijk een schaduw, omdat hij voor Gods aangezicht niet vreest. 14Er is nog een ijdelheid, die op aarde geschiedt: dat er zijn rechtvaardigen, dien het wedervaart naar het werk der goddelozen, en er zijn goddelozen, dien het wedervaart naar het werk der rechtvaardigen. Ik zeg, dat dit ook ijdelheid is. 15Daarom prees ik de blijdschap, dewijl de mens niets beters heeft onder de zon, dan te eten, en te drinken, en blijde te zijn; want dat zal hem aankleven van zijn arbeid, de dagen zijns levens, die hem God geeft onder de zon. 16Als ik mijn hart begaf, om wijsheid te weten, en om aan te zien de bezigheid, die op de aarde geschiedt, dat men ook, des daags of des nachts, den slaap niet ziet met zijne ogen; 17Toen zag ik alle werk Gods, dat de mens niet kan uitvinden, het werk, dat onder de zon geschiedt, om hetwelk een mens arbeidt om te zoeken, maar hij zal het niet uitvinden; ja, indien ook een wijze zeide, dat hij het zou weten, zo zal hij het toch niet kunnen uitvinden.
