1Melhor é uma boa reputação do que o bom óleo perfumado; e o dia da morte de alguém é melhor que o dia de seu nascimento 2Melhor é ir à casa do luto do que a casa do banquete, porque isto é o fim de todos os homens; e os vivos tomam isto em seus corações. 3Melhor é o sofrimento do que o riso, porque com a tristeza do rosto o coração se aperfeiçoa. 4O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos está na casa da alegria. 5Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio do que alguém ouvir a canção dos tolos; 6Pois o riso dos tolos é como o ruído de espinhos debaixo de uma panela; também isto é futilidade. 7Verdadeiramente a opressão faz até o sábio enlouquecer, e o suborno corrompe o coração. 8Melhor é o fim das coisas do que o princípio delas; melhor é o paciente de espírito que o arrogante de espírito. 9Não te apresses em teu espírito para te irares, porque a ira repousa no colo dos tolos. 10Nunca digas: Por que os dias passados foram melhores que estes de agora ? Pois não haveria sabedoria nisto que perguntarias. 11Boa é a sabedoria com a herança; e proveito há para os que veem ao sol; 12Porque a sabedoria serve de proteção, assim como o dinheiro serve de proteção; mas a maior vantagem do conhecimento é que a sabedoria dá vida aos que a possuem. 13Observa a obra de Deus, pois quem poderá endireitar o que ele entortou? 14No dia da prosperidade, alegra-te; mas no dia da adversidade, considera; pois Deus faz um em contraposição ao outro, para que o homem não consiga descobrir o que haverá depois dele. 15Tudo isto vi nos meus dias de futilidade: há justo que perece em sua justiça, e há perverso que prolonga sua vida em sua maldade. 16Não sejas justo demais, nem sejas sábio demais; para que destruirias a ti mesmo? 17Não sejas perverso demais, nem sejas tolo; para que morrerias antes de teu tempo? 18É bom que retenhas isto, e também não retires tua mão disto, pois quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isto. 19A sabedoria fortalece ao sábio, mais do que dez homens de autoridade que estejam na cidade. 20Verdadeiramente não há homem justo sobre a terra, que faça o bem, e nunca peque. 21Além disso, não dês atenção a todas as palavras que forem ditas, para que não venhas a ouvir que teu servo te amaldiçoa; 22Pois teu coração sabe que também tu já amaldiçoaste a outros. 23Tudo isto investiguei com sabedoria. Eu disse: Terei para mim mais sabedoria;porém ela ficava ainda mais longe de mim. 24Quem pode encontrar o que está distante e tão profundo? 25Decidi em meu coração conhecer, investigar e buscar a sabedoria e a razão; e saber o mal que há na tolice e na loucura das maluquices. 26E eu encontrei uma coisa mais amarga que a morte: a mulher cujo coração são redes e armadilhas, e suas mãos são amarras; quem for bom perante Deus escapará dela; mas o pecador ficará preso nela. 27Olha isto:(diz o pregador, enquanto ele procurava entender as coisas ,uma por uma) 28Aquilo que minha alma tem buscado, ainda não achei; um homem entre mil eu achei; mas uma mulher entre todas estas não achei. 29Eis que somente achei isto: que Deus fez os homens corretos, porém foram eles que buscaram muitos desejos ruins.
1A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth. 2It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart. 3Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good. 4The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. 6For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity. 7Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding. 8Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. 9Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools. 10Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this. 11Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun. 12For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it. 13Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight, which he has made crooked? 14In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him. 15All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing. 16Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time? 18It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also from that don’t withdraw your hand; for he who fears God will come out of them all. 19Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city. 20Surely there is not a righteous man on earth, who does good and doesn’t sin. 21Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you; 22for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others. 23All this have I proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise”; but it was far from me. 24That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out? 25I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness. 26I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her. 27“Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “one to another, to find out the scheme; 28which my soul still seeks; but I have not found. One man among a thousand have I found; but I have not found a woman among all those. 29Behold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they search for many schemes.”

Dit is ook ijdelheid. 7Voorwaar, de onderdrukking zou wel een wijze dol maken; en het geschenk verderft het hart. 8Het einde van een ding is beter dan zijn begin; de lankmoedige is beter dan de hoogmoedige. 9Zijt niet haastig in uw geest om te toornen; want de toorn rust in den boezem der dwazen. 10Zeg niet: Wat is er, dat de vorige dagen beter geweest zijn, dan deze? Want gij zoudt naar zulks niet uit wijsheid vragen. 11De wijsheid is goed met een erfdeel; en degenen, die de zon aanschouwen, hebben voordeel daarvan. 12Want de wijsheid is tot een schaduw, en het geld is tot een schaduw; maar de uitnemendheid der wetenschap is, dat de wijsheid haar bezitters het leven geeft. 13Aanmerk het werk Gods; want wie kan recht maken, dat Hij krom gemaakt heeft? 14Geniet het goede ten dage des voorspoeds, maar ten dage des tegenspoeds, zie toe; want God maakt ook den een tegenover den ander, ter oorzake dat de mens niet zou vinden iets, dat na hem zal zijn. 15Dit alles heb ik gezien in de dagen mijner ijdelheid; er is een rechtvaardige, die in zijn gerechtigheid omkomt; daarentegen is er een goddeloze, die in zijn boosheid zijn dagen verlengt. 16Wees niet al te rechtvaardig, noch houd uzelven al te wijs; waarom zoudt gij verwoesting over u brengen? 17Wees niet al te goddeloos, noch wees al te dwaas; waarom zoudt gij sterven buiten uw tijd? 18Het is goed, dat gij daaraan vasthoudt, en trek ook uw hand van dit niet af; want die God vreest, dien ontgaat dat al. 19De wijsheid versterkt den wijze meer dan tien heerschappers, die in een stad zijn. 20Voorwaar, er is geen mens rechtvaardig op aarde, die goed doet, en niet zondigt. 21Geef ook uw hart niet tot alle woorden, die men spreekt, opdat gij niet hoort, dat uw knecht u vloekt. 22Want uw hart heeft ook veelmalen bekend, dat gij ook anderen gevloekt hebt. 23Dit alles heb ik met wijsheid verzocht; ik zeide: Ik zal wijsheid bekomen, maar zij was nog verre van mij. 24Hetgeen verre af is, en zeer diep, wie zal dat vinden? 25Ik keerde mij om, en mijn hart, om te weten, en om na te sporen, en te zoeken wijsheid en een sluitrede; en om te weten de goddeloosheid der zotheid, en de dwaasheid der onzinnigheden. 26En ik vond een bitterder ding, dan de dood: een vrouw, welker hart netten en garen, en haar handen banden zijn; wie goed is voor Gods aangezicht, zal van haar ontkomen; daarentegen de zondaar zal van haar gevangen worden. 27Ziet, dit heb ik gevonden, zegt de prediker, het ene bij het andere, om de sluitrede te vinden; 28Dewelke mijn ziel nog zoekt, maar ik heb haar niet gevonden: een man uit duizend heb ik gevonden; maar een vrouw onder die allen heb ik niet gevonden. 29Alleenlijk ziet, dit heb ik gevonden, dat God den mens recht gemaakt heeft, maar zij hebben veel vonden gezocht.
