1E ouviu Jetro, sacerdote de Midiã, sogro de Moisés, todas as coisas que Deus havia feito com Moisés, e com Israel seu povo, e como o SENHOR havia tirado a Israel do Egito: 2E tomou Jetro, sogro de Moisés a Zípora a mulher de Moisés, depois que ele a enviou, 3E a seus dois filhos; um se chamava Gérson, porque disse: Peregrino fui em terra alheia; 4E o outro se chamava Eliézer, porque disse, O Deus de meu pai me ajudou, e me livrou da espada de Faraó. 5E Jetro o sogro de Moisés, com seus filhos e sua mulher, chegou a Moisés no deserto, onde tinha o acampamento junto ao monte de Deus; 6E disse a Moisés: Eu teu sogro Jetro venho a ti, com tua mulher, e seus dois filhos com ela. 7E Moisés saiu a receber a seu sogro, e inclinou-se, e beijou-o: e perguntaram-se um ao outro como estavam, e vieram à tenda. 8E Moisés contou a seu sogro todas as coisas que o SENHOR havia feito a Faraó e aos egípcios por causa de Israel, e todo o trabalho que haviam passado no caminho, e como os havia livrado o SENHOR. 9E alegrou-se Jetro de todo o bem que o SENHOR havia feito a Israel, que o havia livrado da mão dos egípcios. 10E Jetro disse: Bendito seja o SENHOR, que vos livrou da mão dos egípcios, e da mão de Faraó, e que livrou ao povo da mão dos egípcios. 11Agora conheço que o SENHOR é maior que todos os deuses, até naquilo em que se vangloriavam contra o povo. 12E tomou Jetro, sogro de Moisés, holocaustos e sacrifícios para Deus: e veio Arão e todos os anciãos de Israel a comer pão com o sogro de Moisés diante de Deus. 13E aconteceu que outro dia se sentou Moisés a julgar ao povo; e o povo esteve diante de Moisés desde a manhã até à tarde. 14E vendo o sogro de Moisés tudo o que ele fazia com o povo, disse: Que é isto que fazes tu com o povo? por que te sentas tu sozinho, e todo o povo está diante de ti desde a manhã até à tarde? 15E Moisés respondeu a seu sogro: Porque o povo vem a mim para consultar a Deus: 16Quando têm negócios, vem a mim; e eu julgo entre o um e o outro, e declaro as ordenanças de Deus e suas leis. 17Então o sogro de Moisés lhe disse: Não fazes bem: 18Desfalecerás de todo, tu, e também este povo que está contigo; porque o negócio é demasiado pesado para ti; não poderás fazê-lo tu sozinho. 19Ouve agora minha voz; eu te aconselharei, e Deus será contigo. Está tu pelo povo diante de Deus, e traze tu os negócios a Deus. 20E ensina a eles as ordenanças e as leis, e mostra-lhes o caminho por onde andem, e o que hão de fazer. 21Ademais busca dentre todo o povo homens de virtude, temerosos de Deus, homens de verdade, que odeiem a ganância; e constituirás a estes sobre eles líderes sobre mil, sobre cem, sobre cinquenta e sobre dez. 22Os quais julgarão ao povo ao todo tempo; e será que todo negócio grave o trarão a ti, e eles julgarão todo negócio pequeno: alivia assim a carga de sobre ti, e eles a levarão contigo. 23Se isto fizeres, e Deus te o mandar, tu poderás persistir, e todo este povo se irá também em paz a seu lugar. 24E ouviu Moisés a voz de seu sogro, e fez tudo o que disse. 25E escolheu Moisés homens de virtude de todo Israel, e os pôs por chefes sobre o povo, líderes sobre mil, sobre cem, sobre cinquenta, e sobre dez. 26E julgavam ao povo ao todo tempo; o negócio árduo traziam-no a Moisés, e eles julgavam todo negócio pequeno. 27E despediu Moisés a seu sogro, e foi-se à sua terra.
1Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her away, 3and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, for Moses said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land”. 4The name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh’s sword.” 5Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God. 6He said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her.” 7Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent. 8Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them. 9Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them.” 12Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God. 13On the next day, Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening. 14When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?” 15Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.” 17Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. 18You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone. 19Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God. 20You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do. 21Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you. 23If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace.” 24So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. 25Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. 27Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.
1Toen Jethro, priester van Midian, schoonvader van Mozes, hoorde al wat God aan Mozes, en aan Israel, Zijn volk, gedaan had: dat de HEERE Israel uit Egypte uitgevoerd had; 2Zo nam Jethro, Mozes' schoonvader, Zippora, Mozes' huisvrouw (nadat hij haar wedergezonden had), 3Met haar twee zonen, welker enes naam was Gersom (want hij zeide: Ik ben een vreemdeling geweest in een vreemd land); 4En de naam des anderen was Eliezer, want, zeide hij, de God mijns vaders is tot mijn Hulpe geweest, en heeft mij verlost van Farao's zwaard. 5Toen nu Jethro, Mozes' schoonvader, met zijn zonen en zijn huisvrouw, tot Mozes kwam, in de woestijn, aan den berg Gods, waar hij zich gelegerd had, 6Zo zeide hij tot Mozes: Ik, uw schoonvader Jethro, kom tot u, met uw huisvrouw, en haar beide zonen met haar. 7Toen ging Mozes uit, zijn schoonvader tegemoet, en hij boog zich, en kuste hem; en zij vraagden de een den ander naar den welstand, en zij gingen naar de tent. 8En Mozes vertelde zijn schoonvader alles, wat de HEERE aan Farao en aan de Egyptenaren gedaan had, om Israels wil; al de moeite, die hun op dien weg ontmoet was, en dat hen de HEERE verlost had. 9Jethro nu verheugde zich over al het goede, hetwelk de HEERE Israel gedaan had; dat Hij het verlost had uit de hand der Egyptenaren. 10En Jethro zeide: Gezegend zij de HEERE, Die ulieden verlost heeft uit de hand der Egyptenaren, en uit Farao's hand; Die dit volk van onder de hand der Egyptenaren verlost heeft! 11Nu weet ik, dat de HEERE groter is dan alle goden; want in de zaak, waarin zij trotselijk gehandeld hebben, was Hij boven hen. 12Toen nam Jethro, de schoonvader van Mozes, Gode brandoffer en slachtofferen; en Aaron kwam, en al de oversten van Israel, om brood te eten met den schoonvader van Mozes, voor het aangezicht Gods. 13Doch het geschiedde des anderen daags, zo zat Mozes om het volk te richten, en het volk stond voor Mozes, van den morgen tot den avond. 14Als de schoonvader van Mozes alles zag, wat hij het volk deed, zo zeide hij: Wat ding is dit, dat gij het volk doet? Waarom zit gij zelf alleen, en al het volk staat voor u, van den morgen tot den avond? 15Toen zeide Mozes tot zijn schoonvader: Omdat dit volk tot mij komt, om God raad te vragen. 16Wanneer zij een zaak hebben, zo komt het tot mij, dat ik richte tussen den man en tussen zijn naaste; en dat ik hun bekend make Gods instellingen en Zijn wetten. 17Doch de schoonvader van Mozes zeide tot hem: De zaak is niet goed, die gij doet. 18Gij zult geheel vervallen, zo gij, als dit volk, hetwelk bij u is; want deze zaak is te zwaar voor u, gij alleen kunt het niet doen. 19Hoor nu mijn stem, ik zal u raden, en God zal met u zijn; wees gij voor het volk bij God, en breng gij de zaken voor God; 20En verklaar hun de instellingen en de wetten, en maak hun bekend den weg, waarin zij wandelen zullen, en het werk, dat zij doen zullen. 21Doch zie gij om, onder al het volk, naar kloeke mannen, God vrezende, waarachtige mannen, de gierigheid hatende; stel ze over hen, oversten der duizenden, oversten der honderden, oversten der vijftigen, oversten der tienen. 22Dat zij dit volk te allen tijde richten; doch het geschiede, dat zij alle grote zaken aan u brengen, maar dat zij alle kleine zaken richten; verlicht alzo uzelven, en laat hen met u dragen. 23Indien gij deze zaak doet, en God het u gebiedt, zo zult gij kunnen bestaan; zo zal ook al dit volk in vrede aan zijn plaats komen. 24Mozes nu hoorde naar de stem van zijn schoonvader, en hij deed alles, wat hij gezegd had. 25En Mozes verkoos kloeke mannen, uit gans Israel, en maakte hen tot hoofden over het volk; oversten der duizenden, oversten der honderden, oversten der vijftigen, en oversten der tienen; 26Dat zij het volk te allen tijde richtten, de harde zaak tot Mozes brachten, maar zij alle kleine zaak richtten. 27Toen liet Mozes zijn schoonvader trekken; en hij ging naar zijn land.
