1Esta palavra é fiel: se alguém deseja ser bispo, deseja uma excelente obra. 2É dever, portanto, que o bispo seja irrepreensível, marido de uma mulher, sóbrio, comedido, decente, hospitaleiro, apto para ensinar; 3Não dado ao vinho, não violento, mas sim moderado, não briguento, não cobiçoso por dinheiro; 4que governe bem a sua própria casa, e tenha os seus filhos em submissão com toda dignidade. 5(Pois, se alguém não sabe governar a sua própria casa, como cuidará da igreja de Deus?) 6Não um novo convertido; para que não se torne arrogante, e caia na condenação do diabo. 7É dever também que tenha bom testemunho dos que estão de fora, para que não caia em reprovação pública e na cilada do diabo. 8De maneira semelhante, os diáconos sejam de boa conduta, não contraditórios, não dados a muito vinho, não cobiçosos de ganho desonesto, 9mas mantenham o mistério da fé em consciência pura. 10E também esses sejam primeiro testados, depois sirvam, se forem irrepreensíveis. 11De semelhante maneira, as mulheres sejam de boa conduta, não maldizentes, sóbrias, e fiéis em todas as coisas. 12Os diáconos sejam maridos de uma mulher, e governem bem os filhos e as suas próprias casas. 13Pois os que servirem bem obtêm para si uma posição honrosa e muita confiança na fé que há em Cristo Jesus. 14Escrevo-te essas coisas esperando ir a ti em breve; 15mas, seu eu demorar, para que saibais como se deve comportar na casa de Deus, que é a igreja do Deus vivo, a coluna e o alicerce da verdade. 16E, sem dúvida nenhuma, grande é o mistério da devoção divina: Ele foi revelado em carne, justificado em Espírito, visto pelos anjos, pregado aos gentios, crido no mundo, e recebido acima em glória.
1This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. 2The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; 3not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; 5(but if a man doesn’t know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) 6not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil. 8Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money; 9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless. 11Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly; 15but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory.
1Dit is een getrouw woord: zo iemand tot eens opzieners ambt lust heeft, die begeert een treffelijk werk. 2Een opziener dan moet onberispelijk zijn, ener vrouwe man, wakker, matig, eerbaar, gaarne herbergende, bekwaam om te leren; 3Niet genegen tot den wijn, geen smijter, geen vuil-gewinzoeker; maar bescheiden, geen vechter, niet geldgierig. 4Die zijn eigen huis wel regeert, zijn kinderen in onderdanigheid houdende, met alle stemmigheid; 5(Want zo iemand zijn eigen huis niet weet te regeren, hoe zal hij voor de Gemeente Gods zorg dragen?) 6Geen nieuweling, opdat hij niet opgeblazen worde, en in het oordeel des duivels valle. 7En hij moet ook een goede getuigenis hebben van degenen, die buiten zijn, opdat hij niet valle in smaadheid, en in den strik des duivels. 8De diakenen insgelijks moeten eerbaar zijn, niet tweetongig, niet die zich tot veel wijns begeven, geen vuil-gewinzoekers; 9Houdende de verborgenheid des geloofs in een rein geweten. 10En dat deze ook eerst beproefd worden, en dat zij daarna dienen, zo zij onbestraffelijk zijn. 11De vrouwen insgelijks moeten eerbaar zijn, geen lasteraarsters, wakker, getrouw in alles. 12Dat de diakenen ener vrouwe mannen zijn, die hun kinderen en hun eigen huizen wel regeren. 13Want die wel gediend hebben, verkrijgen zichzelven een goeden opgang, en vele vrijmoedigheid in het geloof, hetwelk is in Christus Jezus. 14Deze dingen schrijf ik u, hopende zeer haast tot u te komen; 15Maar zo ik vertoef, opdat gij moogt weten, hoe men in het huis Gods moet verkeren, hetwelk is de Gemeente des levenden Gods, een pilaar en vastigheid der waarheid. 16En buiten allen twijfel, de verborgenheid der godzaligheid is groot: God is geopenbaard in het vlees, is gerechtvaardigd in den Geest, is gezien van de engelen, is gepredikt onder de heidenen, is geloofd in de wereld, is opgenomen in heerlijkheid.
