1Perché, fratelli, non voglio che ignoriate che i nostri padri furon tutti sotto la nuvola, e tutti passarono attraverso il mare, 2e tutti furon battezzati, nella nuvola e nel mare, per esser di Mosè, 3e tutti mangiarono lo stesso cibo spirituale, 4e tutti bevvero la stessa bevanda spirituale, perché beveano alla roccia spirituale che li seguiva; e la roccia era Cristo. 5Ma della maggior parte di loro Iddio non si compiacque, poiché furono atterrati nel deserto. 6Or queste cose avvennero per servir d’esempio a noi, onde non siam bramosi di cose malvage, come coloro ne furon bramosi; 7onde non diventiate idolatri come alcuni di loro, secondo che è scritto: Il popolo si sedette per mangiare e per bere, poi s’alzò per divertirsi; 8onde non fornichiamo come taluni di loro fornicarono, e ne caddero, in un giorno solo, ventitremila; 9onde non tentiamo il Signore, come alcuni di loro lo tentarono, e perirono morsi dai serpenti. 10E non mormorate come alcuni di loro mormorarono, e perirono colpiti dal distruttore. 11Or queste cose avvennero loro per servire d’esempio, e sono state scritte per ammonizione di noi, che ci troviamo agli ultimi termini dei tempi. 12Perciò, chi si pensa di stare ritto, guardi di non cadere. 13Niuna tentazione vi ha còlti, che non sia stata umana; or Iddio è fedele e non permetterà che siate tentati al di là delle vostre forze; ma con la tentazione vi darà anche la via d’uscirne, onde la possiate sopportare. 14Perciò, cari miei, fuggite l’idolatria. 15Io parlo come a persone intelligenti; giudicate voi di quello che dico. 16Il calice della benedizione che noi benediciamo, non è egli la comunione col sangue di Cristo? Il pane, che noi rompiamo, non è egli la comunione col corpo di Cristo? 17Siccome v’è un unico pane, noi, che siam molti, siamo un corpo unico, perché partecipiamo tutti a quell’unico pane. 18Guardate l’Israele secondo la carne; quelli che mangiano i sacrifici non hanno essi comunione con l’altare? 19Che dico io dunque? Che la carne sacrificata agl’idoli sia qualcosa? Che un idolo sia qualcosa? 20Tutt’altro; io dico che le carni che i Gentili sacrificano, le sacrificano ai demoni e non a Dio; or io non voglio che abbiate comunione coi demoni. 21Voi non potete bere il calice del Signore e il calice de’ demoni; voi non potete partecipare alla mensa del Signore e alla mensa dei demoni. 22O vogliamo noi provocare il Signore a gelosia? Siamo noi più forti di lui? 23Ogni cosa è lecita ma non ogni cosa è utile; ogni cosa è lecita ma non ogni cosa edifica. 24Nessuno cerchi il proprio vantaggio, ma ciascuno cerchi l’altrui. 25Mangiate di tutto quello che si vende al macello senza fare inchieste per motivo di coscienza; 26perché al Signore appartiene la terra e tutto quello ch’essa contiene. 27Se qualcuno de’ non credenti v’invita, e voi volete andarci, mangiate di tutto quello che vi è posto davanti, senza fare inchieste per motivo di coscienza. 28Ma se qualcuno vi dice: Questa è cosa di sacrifici, non ne mangiate per riguardo a colui che v’ha avvertito, e per riguardo alla coscienza; 29alla coscienza, dico, non tua, ma di quell’altro; infatti, perché la mia libertà sarebb’ella giudicata dalla coscienza altrui? 30E se io mangio di una cosa con rendimento di grazie, perché sarei biasimato per quello di cui io rendo grazie? 31Sia dunque che mangiate, sia che beviate, sia che facciate alcun’altra cosa, fate tutto alla gloria di Dio. 32Non siate d’intoppo né ai Giudei, né ai Greci, né alla Chiesa di Dio: 33sì come anch’io compiaccio a tutti in ogni cosa, non cercando l’utile mio proprio, ma quello de’ molti, affinché siano salvati.
1Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3and all ate the same spiritual food; 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7Neither be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8Neither let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell. 9Neither let us test the Lord, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents. 10Neither grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer. 11Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall. 13No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say. 16The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ? 17Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread. 18Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? 19What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons. 21You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons. 22Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? 23“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up. 24Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good. 25Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience, 26for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.” 27But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience. 28But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” 29Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience? 30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for that for which I give thanks? 31Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32Give no occasions for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God; 33even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

Het brood, dat wij breken, is dat niet een gemeenschap des lichaams van Christus? 17Want een brood is het, zo zijn wij velen een lichaam, dewijl wij allen eens broods deelachtig zijn. 18Ziet Israel, dat naar het vlees is: hebben niet degenen, die de offeranden eten, gemeenschap met het altaar? 19Wat zeg ik dan? Dat een afgod iets is, of dat het afgodenoffer iets is? 20Ja, ik zeg, dat hetgeen de heidenen offeren, zij den duivelen offeren, en niet Gode; en ik wil niet, dat gij met de duivelen gemeenschap hebt. 21Gij kunt den drinkbeker des Heeren niet drinken, en den drinkbeker der duivelen; gij kunt niet deelachtig zijn aan de tafel des Heeren, en aan de tafel der duivelen. 22Of tergen wij den Heere? Zijn wij sterker dan Hij? 23Alle dingen zijn mij geoorloofd, maar alle dingen zijn niet oorbaar; alle dingen zijn mij geoorloofd, maar alle dingen stichten niet. 24Niemand zoeke dat zijns zelfs is; maar een iegelijk zoeke dat des anderen is. 25Eet al wat in het vleeshuis verkocht wordt, niets ondervragende, om des gewetens wil; 26Want de aarde is des Heeren, en de volheid derzelve. 27En indien u iemand van de ongelovigen noodt, en gij daar gaan wilt, eet al wat ulieden voorgesteld wordt, niets ondervragende, om des gewetens wil. 28Maar zo iemand tot ulieden zegt: Dat is afgodenoffer; eet het niet, om desgenen wil, die u dat te kennen gegeven heeft, en om des gewetens wil. Want de aarde is des Heeren, en de volheid derzelve. 29Doch ik zeg: om het geweten, niet van uzelven, maar des anderen; want waarom wordt mijn vrijheid geoordeeld van een ander geweten? 30En indien ik door genade der spijze deelachtig ben, waarom word ik gelasterd over hetgeen, waarvoor ik dankzeg? 31Hetzij dan dat gijlieden eet, hetzij dat gij drinkt, hetzij dat gij iets anders doet, doet het al ter ere Gods. 32Weest zonder aanstoot te geven, en den Joden, en den Grieken, en der Gemeente Gods. 33Gelijkerwijs ik ook in alles allen behaag, niet zoekende mijn eigen voordeel, maar het voordeel van velen, opdat zij mochten behouden worden.
