1Il y avait un homme malade, Lazare, de Béthanie, village de Marie et de Marthe, sa sœur. 2C’était cette Marie qui oignit de parfum le Seigneur et qui lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux, et c’était son frère Lazare qui était malade. 3Les sœurs envoyèrent dire à Jésus : Seigneur, voici, celui que tu aimes est malade. 4Après avoir entendu cela, Jésus dit : Cette maladie n’est point à la mort ; mais elle est pour la gloire de Dieu, afin que le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié par elle. 5Or, Jésus aimait Marthe, et sa sœur, et Lazare. 6Lors donc qu’il eut appris que Lazare était malade, il resta deux jours encore dans le lieu où il était, 7et il dit ensuite aux disciples : Retournons en Judée. 8Les disciples lui dirent : Rabbi, les Juifs tout récemment cherchaient à te lapider, et tu retournes en Judée ! 9Jésus répondit : N’y a-t-il pas douze heures au jour ? Si quelqu’un marche pendant le jour, il ne bronche point, parce qu’il voit la lumière de ce monde ; 10mais, si quelqu’un marche pendant la nuit, il bronche, parce que la lumière n’est pas en lui. 11Après ces paroles, il leur dit : Lazare, notre ami, dort ; mais je vais le réveiller. 12Les disciples lui dirent : Seigneur, s’il dort, il sera guéri. 13Jésus avait parlé de sa mort, mais ils crurent qu’il parlait de l’assoupissement du sommeil. 14Alors Jésus leur dit ouvertement : Lazare est mort. 15Et, à cause de vous, afin que vous croyiez, je me réjouis de ce que je n’étais pas là. Mais allons vers lui. 16Sur quoi Thomas, appelé Didyme, dit aux autres disciples : Allons aussi, afin de mourir avec lui. 17Jésus , étant arrivé, trouva que Lazare était déjà depuis quatre jours dans le sépulcre. 18Et, comme Béthanie était près de Jérusalem, à quinze stades environ, 19beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus vers Marthe et Marie, pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère. 20Lorsque Marthe apprit que Jésus arrivait, elle alla au-devant de lui, tandis que Marie se tenait assise à la maison. 21Marthe dit à Jésus : Seigneur, si tu eusses été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. 22Mais, maintenant même, je sais que tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te l’accordera. 23Jésus lui dit : Ton frère ressuscitera. 24Je sais, lui répondit Marthe, qu’il ressuscitera à la résurrection, au dernier jour. 25Jésus lui dit : Je suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi vivra, quand même il serait mort ; 26et quiconque vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela ? 27Elle lui dit : Oui, Seigneur, je crois que tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, qui devait venir dans le monde. 28Ayant ainsi parlé, elle s’en alla. Puis elle appela secrètement Marie, sa sœur, et lui dit : Le maître est ici, et il te demande. 29Dès que Marie eut entendu, elle se leva promptement, et alla vers lui. 30Car Jésus n’était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il était dans le lieu où Marthe l’avait rencontré. 31Les Juifs qui étaient avec Marie dans la maison et qui la consolaient, l’ayant vue se lever promptement et sortir, la suivirent, disant : Elle va au sépulcre, pour y pleurer. 32Lorsque Marie fut arrivée là où était Jésus, et qu’elle le vit, elle tomba à ses pieds, et lui dit : Seigneur, si tu eusses été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. 33Jésus , la voyant pleurer, elle et les Juifs qui étaient venus avec elle , frémit en son esprit, et fut tout ému. 34Et il dit : Où l’avez-vous mis ? Seigneur, lui répondirent-ils, viens et vois. 35Jésus pleura. 36Sur quoi les Juifs dirent : Voyez comme il l’aimait. 37Et quelques-uns d’entre eux dirent : Lui qui a ouvert les yeux de l’aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas faire aussi que cet homme ne mourût point ? 38Jésus frémissant de nouveau en lui-même, se rendit au sépulcre. C’était une grotte, et une pierre était placée devant. 39Jésus dit : Otez la pierre. Marthe, la sœur du mort, lui dit : Seigneur, il sent déjà, car il y a quatre jours qu’il est là. 40Jésus lui dit : Ne t’ai-je pas dit que, si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu ? 41Ils ôtèrent donc la pierre . Et Jésus leva les yeux en haut, et dit : Père, je te rends grâces de ce que tu m’as exaucé. 42Pour moi, je savais que tu m’exauces toujours ; mais j’ai parlé à cause de la foule qui m’entoure, afin qu’ils croient que c’est toi qui m’as envoyé. 43Ayant dit cela, il cria d’une voix forte : Lazare, sors ! 44Et le mort sortit, les pieds et les mains liés de bandes, et le visage enveloppé d’un linge. Jésus leur dit : Déliez-le, et laissez-le aller. 45Plusieurs des Juifs qui étaient venus vers Marie, et qui virent ce que fit Jésus, crurent en lui. 46Mais quelques-uns d’entre eux allèrent trouver les pharisiens, et leur dirent ce que Jésus avait fait. 47Alors les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens assemblèrent le sanhédrin, et dirent : Que ferons-nous ? Car cet homme fait beaucoup de miracles. 48Si nous le laissons faire, tous croiront en lui, et les Romains viendront détruire et notre ville et notre nation. 49L’un d’eux, Caïphe, qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, leur dit : Vous n’y entendez rien ; 50vous ne réfléchissez pas qu’il est dans votre intérêt qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que la nation entière ne périsse pas. 51Or, il ne dit pas cela de lui-même ; mais étant souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus devait mourir pour la nation. 52Et ce n’était pas pour la nation seulement ; c’était aussi afin de réunir en un seul corps les enfants de Dieu dispersés. 53Dès ce jour , ils résolurent de le faire mourir. 54C’est pourquoi Jésus ne se montra plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs ; mais il se retira dans la contrée voisine du désert, dans une ville appelée Éphraïm ; et là il demeurait avec ses disciples. 55La Pâque des Juifs était proche. Et beaucoup de gens du pays montèrent à Jérusalem avant la Pâque, pour se purifier. 56Ils cherchaient Jésus, et ils se disaient les uns aux autres dans le temple : Que vous en semble ? Ne viendra-t-il pas à la fête ? 57Or , les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens avaient donné l’ordre que, si quelqu’un savait où il était, il le déclarât, afin qu’on se saisît de lui.
1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. 2It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. 7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.” 8The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.” 11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.” 12The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead. 15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.” 16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.” 17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away. 19Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.” 28When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.” 29When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. 31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.” 32Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus wept. 36The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!” 37Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?” 38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?” 41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me. 42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.” 45Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him. 46But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. 48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples. 55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?” 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

Gelooft gij dat? 27Zij zeide tot Hem: Ja, Heere; ik heb geloofd, dat Gij zijt de Christus, de Zone Gods, Die in de wereld komen zou. 28En dit gezegd hebbende, ging zij heen, en riep Maria, haar zuster, heimelijk, zeggende: De Meester is daar, en Hij roept u. 29Deze, als zij dat hoorde, stond haastelijk op, en ging tot Hem. 30(Jezus nu was nog in het vlek niet gekomen, maar was in de plaats, waar Hem Martha tegemoet gekomen was.) 31De Joden dan, die met haar in het huis waren, en haar vertroostten, ziende Maria, dat zij haastelijk opstond en uitging, volgden haar, zeggende: Zij gaat naar het graf, opdat zij aldaar wene. 32Maria dan, als zij kwam, waar Jezus was, en Hem zag, viel aan Zijn voeten, zeggende tot Hem: Heere, indien Gij hier geweest waart, zo ware mijn broeder niet gestorven. 33Jezus dan, als Hij haar zag wenen, en de Joden, die met haar kwamen, ook wenen, werd zeer bewogen in den geest, en ontroerde Zichzelven; 34En zeide: Waar hebt gij hem gelegd? Jezus zeide tot hen: Ontbindt hem, en laat hem heengaan. 45Velen dan uit de Joden, die tot Maria gekomen waren, en aanschouwd hadden, hetgeen Jezus gedaan had, geloofden in Hem. 46Maar sommigen van hen gingen tot de Farizeen, en zeiden tot hen, hetgeen Jezus gedaan had. 47De overpriesters dan en de Farizeen vergaderden den raad, en zeiden: Wat zullen wij doen? want deze Mens doet vele tekenen. 48Indien wij Hem alzo laten geworden, zij zullen allen in Hem geloven, en de Romeinen zullen komen, en wegnemen beide onze plaats en volk. 49En een uit hen, namelijk Kajafas, die deszelven jaars hogepriester was, zeide tot hen: Gij verstaat niets; 50En gij overlegt niet, dat het ons nut is, dat een mens sterve voor het volk, en het gehele volk niet verloren ga. 51En dit zeide hij niet uit zichzelven; maar, zijnde hogepriester deszelven jaars, profeteerde hij, dat Jezus sterven zou voor het volk; 52En niet alleen voor dat volk, maar opdat Hij ook de kinderen Gods, die verstrooid waren, tot een zou vergaderen. 53Van dien dag dan af beraadslaagden zij te zamen, dat zij Hem doden zouden. 54Jezus dan wandelde niet meer vrijelijk onder de Joden; maar ging van daar naar het land bij de woestijn, naar de stad, genaamd Efraim, en verkeerde aldaar met Zijn discipelen. 55En het pascha der Joden was nabij, en velen uit dat land gingen op naar Jeruzalem, voor het pascha, opdat zij zichzelven reinigden. 56Zij zochten dan Jezus, en zeiden onder elkander, staande in den tempel: Wat dunkt u? Dunkt u, dat Hij niet komen zal tot het feest? 57De overpriesters nu en de Farizeen hadden een gebod gegeven, dat, zo iemand wist, waar Hij was, hij het zou te kennen geven, opdat zij Hem mochten vangen.
