1Alors Dieu prononça toutes ces paroles, en disant : 2Je suis l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t’ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude. 3Tu n’auras pas d’autres dieux devant ma face. 4Tu ne te feras point d’image taillée, ni de représentation quelconque des choses qui sont en haut dans les cieux, qui sont en bas sur la terre, et qui sont dans les eaux plus bas que la terre. 5Tu ne te prosterneras point devant elles, et tu ne les serviras point ; car moi, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, qui punis l’iniquité des pères sur les enfants jusqu’à la troisième et la quatrième génération de ceux qui me haïssent, 6et qui fais miséricorde jusqu’en mille générations à ceux qui m’aiment et qui gardent mes commandements. 7Tu ne prendras point le nom de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en vain ; car l’Éternel ne laissera point impuni celui qui prendra son nom en vain. 8Souviens-toi du jour du repos, pour le sanctifier. 9Tu travailleras six jours, et tu feras tout ton ouvrage. 10Mais le septième jour est le jour du repos de l’Éternel, ton Dieu : tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bétail, ni l’étranger qui est dans tes portes. 11Car en six jours l’Éternel a fait les cieux, la terre et la mer, et tout ce qui y est contenu, et il s’est reposé le septième jour : c’est pourquoi l’Éternel a béni le jour du repos et l’a sanctifié. 12Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours se prolongent dans le pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne. 13Tu ne tueras point. 14Tu ne commettras point d’adultère. 15Tu ne déroberas point. 16Tu ne porteras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain. 17Tu ne convoiteras point la maison de ton prochain ; tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni aucune chose qui appartienne à ton prochain. 18Tout le peuple entendait les tonnerres et le son de la trompette ; il voyait les flammes de la montagne fumante. À ce spectacle, le peuple tremblait, et se tenait dans l’éloignement. 19Ils dirent à Moïse : Parle-nous toi-même, et nous écouterons ; mais que Dieu ne nous parle point, de peur que nous ne mourions. 20Moïse dit au peuple : Ne vous effrayez pas ; car c’est pour vous mettre à l’épreuve que Dieu est venu, et c’est pour que vous ayez sa crainte devant les yeux, afin que vous ne péchiez point. 21Le peuple restait dans l’éloignement ; mais Moïse s’approcha de la nuée où était Dieu. 22L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Tu parleras ainsi aux enfants d’Israël : Vous avez vu que je vous ai parlé depuis les cieux. 23Vous ne ferez point des dieux d’argent et des dieux d’or, pour me les associer ; vous ne vous en ferez point. 24Tu m’élèveras un autel de terre, sur lequel tu offriras tes holocaustes et tes sacrifices d’actions de grâces, tes brebis et tes bœufs. Partout où je rappellerai mon nom, je viendrai à toi, et je te bénirai. 25Si tu m’élèves un autel de pierre, tu ne le bâtiras point en pierres taillées ; car en passant ton ciseau sur la pierre, tu la profanerais. 26Tu ne monteras point à mon autel par des degrés, afin que ta nudité ne soit pas découverte.
1God spoke all these words, saying, 2“I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3“You shall have no other gods before me. 4“You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7“You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 8“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9You shall labor six days, and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; 11for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy. 12“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. 13“You shall not murder. 14“You shall not commit adultery. 15“You shall not steal. 16“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” 18All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance. 19They said to Moses, “Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don’t let God speak with us, lest we die.” 20Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won’t sin.” 21The people stayed at a distance, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. 22Yahweh said to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves. 24You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you. 25If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it. 26Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.’
1Toen sprak God al deze woorden, zeggende: 2Ik ben de HEERE uw God, Die u uit Egypteland, uit het diensthuis, uitgeleid heb. 3Gij zult geen andere goden voor Mijn aangezicht hebben. 4Gij zult u geen gesneden beeld, noch enige gelijkenis maken, van hetgeen boven in den hemel is, noch van hetgeen onder op de aarde is, noch van hetgeen in de wateren onder de aarde is. 5Gij zult u voor die niet buigen, noch hen dienen; want Ik, de HEERE uw God, ben een ijverig God, Die de misdaad der vaderen bezoek aan de kinderen, aan het derde, en aan het vierde lid dergenen, die Mij haten; 6En doe barmhartigheid aan duizenden dergenen, die Mij liefhebben, en Mijn geboden onderhouden. 7Gij zult den Naam des HEEREN uws Gods niet ijdellijk gebruiken; want de HEERE zal niet onschuldig houden, die Zijn Naam ijdellijk gebruikt. 8Gedenkt den sabbatdag, dat gij dien heiligt. 9Zes dagen zult gij arbeiden en al uw werk doen; 10Maar de zevende dag is de sabbat des HEEREN uws Gods; dan zult gij geen werk doen, gij, noch uw zoon, noch uw dochter, noch uw dienstknecht, noch uw dienstmaagd, noch uw vee, noch uw vreemdeling, die in uw poorten is; 11Want in zes dagen heeft de HEERE den hemel en de aarde gemaakt, de zee en al wat daarin is, en Hij rustte ten zevenden dage; daarom zegende de HEERE den sabbatdag, en heiligde denzelven. 12Eert uw vader en uw moeder, opdat uw dagen verlengd worden in het land, dat u de HEERE uw God geeft. 13Gij zult niet doodslaan. 14Gij zult niet echtbreken. 15Gij zult niet stelen. 16Gij zult geen valse getuigenis spreken tegen uw naaste. 17Gij zult niet begeren uws naasten huis; gij zult niet begeren uws naasten vrouw, noch zijn dienstknecht, noch zijn dienstmaagd, noch zijn os, noch zijn ezel, noch iets, dat uws naasten is. 18En al het volk zag de donderen, en de bliksemen, en het geluid der bazuin, en den rokenden berg; toen het volk zulks zag, weken zij af, en stonden van verre. 19En zij zeiden tot Mozes: Spreek gij met ons, en wij zullen horen; en dat God met ons niet spreke, opdat wij niet sterven! 20En Mozes zeide tot het volk: Vreest niet, want God is gekomen, opdat Hij u verzocht, en opdat Zijn vreze voor uw aangezicht zou zijn, dat gij niet zondigdet. 21En het volk stond van verre; maar Mozes naderde tot de donkerheid, alwaar God was. 22Toen zeide de HEERE tot Mozes: Aldus zult gij tot de kinderen Israels zeggen: Gij hebt gezien, dat Ik met ulieden van den hemel gesproken heb. 23Gij zult nevens Mij niet maken zilveren goden, en gouden goden zult gij u niet maken. 24Maakt Mij een altaar van aarde, en offert daarop uw brandofferen, en uw dankofferen, uw schapen, en uw runderen; aan alle plaats, waar Ik Mijns Naams gedachtenis stichten zal, zal Ik tot u komen, en zal u zegenen. 25Maar indien gij Mij een stenen altaar zult maken, zo zult gij dit niet bouwen van gehouwen steen; zo gij uw houwijzer daarover verheft, zo zult gij het ontheiligen. 26Gij zult ook niet met trappen tot Mijn altaar opklimmen, opdat uw schaamte voor hetzelve niet ontdekt worde.
