1Pli bona estas bona nomo, ol bona oleo; kaj la tago de la morto estas pli bona, ol la tago de la naskiĝo. 2Pli bone estas iri en domon de funebro, ol iri en domon de festenado; ĉar morto estas la fino de ĉiu homo, kaj la vivanto notos ĉi tion en sia koro. 3Pli bona estas plendo, ol rido; ĉar ĉe malĝojo de la vizaĝo pliboniĝas la koro. 4La koro de saĝuloj estas en domo de funebro, kaj la koro de malsaĝuloj en domo de ĝojo. 5Pli bone estas aŭskulti riproĉon de saĝulo, ol aŭskulti kanton de malsaĝuloj. 6Ĉar simila al la kraketado de dornoj sub poto estas la ridado de la malsaĝuloj; kaj vantaĵo ĝi estas. 7Ĉar perforteco forprenas la saĝon de saĝulo, kaj la prudenton malbonigas donaco. 8La fino de afero estas pli bona, ol ĝia komenco; pacienculo estas pli bona, ol malhumilulo. 9Ne rapidu koleri en via spirito; ĉar koleremeco loĝas en la brusto de malsaĝuloj. 10Ne diru: Kial la antaŭaj tagoj estis pli bonaj, ol la nunaj? ĉar ne el saĝeco vi ĉi tion demandus. 11Bona estas saĝeco kune kun hereda havo, kaj ĝi estas profita al tiuj, kiuj vidas la sunon. 12Ĉar la saĝeco estas ŝirmo tiel same, kiel mono estas ŝirmo; sed la supereco de scienco konsistas en tio, ke la saĝeco donas vivon al sia posedanto. 13Rigardu la faron de Dio; ĉar kiu povas tion rektigi, kion Li kurbigis? 14En la tago de bonstato uzu la bonstaton, kaj en la tago de malfeliĉo atendu: ĉi tion kaj tion aranĝis Dio, por ke la homo nenion komprenu post Li. 15Ĉion tion mi vidis en miaj vantaj tagoj: okazas, ke virtulo pereas ĉe sia virteco, kaj okazas, ke malvirtulo longe vivas ĉe sia malvirteco. 16Ne estu tro virta, kaj ne rezonu tro multe: kial vi devas vin konfuzi? 17Ne malvirtu tro multe, kaj ne estu senprudenta: kial vi devas morti ne en via tempo? 18Bone estas, se vi tenos vin je unu afero kaj ankaŭ de alia afero vi ne forprenos vian manon; ĉar tiu, kiu timas Dion, penas plaĉi al ĉiuj. 19La saĝeco faras la saĝulon pli forta, ol dek potenculoj en la urbo. 20Ĉar ne ekzistas sur la tero virtulo, kiu farus nur bonon kaj ne pekus. 21Ne ĉiujn vortojn, kiujn oni diras, atentu en via koro, por ke vi ne aŭdu vian sklavon malbenanta vin: 22ĉar multajn fojojn konsciis via koro, ke ankaŭ vi malbenis aliajn. 23Ĉion ĉi tion mi provis per mia saĝo; mi diris al mi: Mi akiru saĝon; tamen ĝi estas malproksima de mi. 24Kio estas malproksima kaj tre profunda, kiu tion komprenos? 25Mi turnis min kun mia koro, por ekkoni, esplori, kaj traserĉi saĝecon kaj prudenton, kaj ekscii, ke la malvirteco estas malsaĝeco kaj ke la senscieco estas sensenca. 26Kaj mi trovas, ke pli malbona ol la morto estas la virino, kiu estas kaptilo, kaj kies koro estas reto, kaj kies manoj estas katenoj; tiu, kiu plaĉas al Dio, sin savos de ŝi, sed pekulo estos kaptita de ŝi. 27Jen, kion mi trovis, diris la Predikanto: oni devas kunigi unu fakton kun alia, por veni al konkludo. 28Jen, kion ankoraŭ serĉis mia animo kaj ne trovis: viron unu inter mil mi trovis, sed virinon inter ĉiuj mi tute ne trovis. 29Nur ĉi tion mi trovis, ke Dio kreis la homon virtema; sed la homoj fordonis sin al multaj artifikoj.
1A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth. 2It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart. 3Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good. 4The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. 6For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity. 7Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding. 8Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. 9Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools. 10Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this. 11Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun. 12For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it. 13Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight, which he has made crooked? 14In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him. 15All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing. 16Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time? 18It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also from that don’t withdraw your hand; for he who fears God will come out of them all. 19Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city. 20Surely there is not a righteous man on earth, who does good and doesn’t sin. 21Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you; 22for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others. 23All this have I proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise”; but it was far from me. 24That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out? 25I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness. 26I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her. 27“Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “one to another, to find out the scheme; 28which my soul still seeks; but I have not found. One man among a thousand have I found; but I have not found a woman among all those. 29Behold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they search for many schemes.”

Dit is ook ijdelheid. 7Voorwaar, de onderdrukking zou wel een wijze dol maken; en het geschenk verderft het hart. 8Het einde van een ding is beter dan zijn begin; de lankmoedige is beter dan de hoogmoedige. 9Zijt niet haastig in uw geest om te toornen; want de toorn rust in den boezem der dwazen. 10Zeg niet: Wat is er, dat de vorige dagen beter geweest zijn, dan deze? Want gij zoudt naar zulks niet uit wijsheid vragen. 11De wijsheid is goed met een erfdeel; en degenen, die de zon aanschouwen, hebben voordeel daarvan. 12Want de wijsheid is tot een schaduw, en het geld is tot een schaduw; maar de uitnemendheid der wetenschap is, dat de wijsheid haar bezitters het leven geeft. 13Aanmerk het werk Gods; want wie kan recht maken, dat Hij krom gemaakt heeft? 14Geniet het goede ten dage des voorspoeds, maar ten dage des tegenspoeds, zie toe; want God maakt ook den een tegenover den ander, ter oorzake dat de mens niet zou vinden iets, dat na hem zal zijn. 15Dit alles heb ik gezien in de dagen mijner ijdelheid; er is een rechtvaardige, die in zijn gerechtigheid omkomt; daarentegen is er een goddeloze, die in zijn boosheid zijn dagen verlengt. 16Wees niet al te rechtvaardig, noch houd uzelven al te wijs; waarom zoudt gij verwoesting over u brengen? 17Wees niet al te goddeloos, noch wees al te dwaas; waarom zoudt gij sterven buiten uw tijd? 18Het is goed, dat gij daaraan vasthoudt, en trek ook uw hand van dit niet af; want die God vreest, dien ontgaat dat al. 19De wijsheid versterkt den wijze meer dan tien heerschappers, die in een stad zijn. 20Voorwaar, er is geen mens rechtvaardig op aarde, die goed doet, en niet zondigt. 21Geef ook uw hart niet tot alle woorden, die men spreekt, opdat gij niet hoort, dat uw knecht u vloekt. 22Want uw hart heeft ook veelmalen bekend, dat gij ook anderen gevloekt hebt. 23Dit alles heb ik met wijsheid verzocht; ik zeide: Ik zal wijsheid bekomen, maar zij was nog verre van mij. 24Hetgeen verre af is, en zeer diep, wie zal dat vinden? 25Ik keerde mij om, en mijn hart, om te weten, en om na te sporen, en te zoeken wijsheid en een sluitrede; en om te weten de goddeloosheid der zotheid, en de dwaasheid der onzinnigheden. 26En ik vond een bitterder ding, dan de dood: een vrouw, welker hart netten en garen, en haar handen banden zijn; wie goed is voor Gods aangezicht, zal van haar ontkomen; daarentegen de zondaar zal van haar gevangen worden. 27Ziet, dit heb ik gevonden, zegt de prediker, het ene bij het andere, om de sluitrede te vinden; 28Dewelke mijn ziel nog zoekt, maar ik heb haar niet gevonden: een man uit duizend heb ik gevonden; maar een vrouw onder die allen heb ik niet gevonden. 29Alleenlijk ziet, dit heb ik gevonden, dat God den mens recht gemaakt heeft, maar zij hebben veel vonden gezocht.
