1Εν εκείναις δε ταις ημέραις εξήλθε διάταγμα παρά του Καίσαρος Αυγούστου να απογραφή πάσα η οικουμένη. 2Αύτη η απογραφή έγεινε πρώτη, ότε ηγεμόνευε της Συρίας ο Κυρήνιος. 3Και ήρχοντο πάντες να απογράφωνται, έκαστος εις την εαυτού πόλιν. 4Ανέβη δε και Ιωσήφ από της Γαλιλαίας εκ της πόλεως Ναζαρέτ εις την Ιουδαίαν εις την πόλιν του Δαβίδ, ήτις καλείται Βηθλεέμ, επειδή αυτός ήτο εκ του οίκου και της πατριάς του Δαβίδ, 5διά να απογραφή μετά της Μαριάμ της ηρραβωνισμένης με αυτόν εις γυναίκα, ήτις ήτο έγκυος. 6Και ενώ ήσαν εκεί, επληρώθησαν αι ημέραι του να γεννήση· 7και εγέννησε τον υιόν αυτής τον πρωτότοκον, και εσπαργάνωσεν αυτόν και κατέκλινεν αυτόν εν τη φάτνη, διότι δεν ήτο τόπος δι' αυτούς εν τω καταλύματι. 8Και ποιμένες ήσαν κατά το αυτό μέρος διανυκτερεύοντες εν τοις αγροίς και φυλάττοντες φυλακάς της νυκτός επί το ποίμνιον αυτών. 9Και ιδού, άγγελος Κυρίου εξαίφνης εφάνη εις αυτούς, και δόξα Κυρίου έλαμψε περί αυτούς, και εφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν. 10Και είπε προς αυτούς ο άγγελος· Μη φοβείσθε· διότι ιδού, ευαγγελίζομαι εις εσάς χαράν μεγάλην, ήτις θέλει είσθαι εις πάντα τον λαόν, 11διότι σήμερον εγεννήθη εις εσάς εν πόλει Δαβίδ σωτήρ, όστις είναι Χριστός Κύριος. 12Και τούτο θέλει είσθαι το σημείον εις εσάς· θέλετε ευρεί βρέφος εσπαργανωμένον, κείμενον εν τη φάτνη. 13Και εξαίφνης μετά του αγγέλου εφάνη πλήθος στρατιάς ουρανίου υμνούντων τον Θεόν και λεγόντων· 14Δόξα εν υψίστοις Θεώ και επί γης ειρήνη, εν ανθρώποις ευδοκία. 15Και καθώς οι άγγελοι ανεχώρησαν απ' αυτών εις τον ουρανόν, οι άνθρωποι οι ποιμένες είπον προς αλλήλους. Ας υπάγωμεν λοιπόν έως Βηθλεέμ και ας ίδωμεν το πράγμα τούτο το γεγονός, το οποίον ο Κύριος εφανέρωσεν εις ημάς. 16Και ήλθον μετά σπουδής και εύρον την τε Μαριάμ και τον Ιωσήφ και το βρέφος κείμενον εν τη φάτνη. 17Και ιδόντες, διεκήρυξαν τον λόγον τον λαληθέντα προς αυτούς περί του παιδίου τούτου· 18και πάντες οι ακούσαντες εθαύμασαν περί των λαληθέντων υπό των ποιμένων προς αυτούς. 19Η δε Μαριάμ εφύλαττε πάντας τους λόγους τούτους, διαλογιζομένη περί αυτών εν τη καρδία αυτής. 20Και υπέστρεψαν οι ποιμένες, δοξάζοντες και υμνούντες τον Θεόν διά πάντα όσα ήκουσαν και είδον, καθώς ελαλήθησαν προς αυτούς. 21Και ότε επληρώθησαν αι οκτώ ημέραι διά να περιτέμωσι το παιδίον, εκλήθη το όνομα αυτού Ιησούς, το ονομασθέν υπό του αγγέλου πριν συλληφθή εν τη κοιλία. 22Και ότε επληρώθησαν αι ημέραι του καθαρισμού αυτής κατά τον νόμον του Μωϋσέως, ανεβίβασαν αυτόν εις Ιεροσόλυμα διά να παραστήσωσιν εις τον Κύριον, 23καθώς είναι γεγραμμένον εν τω νόμω του Κυρίου, ότι παν αρσενικόν διανοίγον μήτραν θέλει κληθή άγιον εις τον Κύριον, 24και διά να προσφέρωσι θυσίαν κατά το ειρημένον εν τω νόμω του Κυρίου, ζεύγος τρυγόνων ή δύο νεοσσούς περιστερών. 25Και ιδού, ήτο άνθρωπός τις εν Ιερουσαλήμ, ονομαζόμενος Συμεών, και ο άνθρωπος ούτος ήτο δίκαιος και ευλαβής, προσμένων την παρηγορίαν του Ισραήλ, και Πνεύμα Άγιον ήτο επ' αυτόν· 26και ήτο εις αυτόν αποκεκαλυμμένον υπό του Πνεύματος του Αγίου ότι δεν θέλει ιδεί θάνατον, πριν ίδη τον Χριστόν του Κυρίου. 27Και ήλθε διά του Πνεύματος εις το ιερόν· και ότε οι γονείς εισέφεραν το παιδίον Ιησούν διά να κάμωσι περί αυτού κατά την συνήθειαν του νόμου, 28αυτός εδέχθη αυτό εις τας αγκάλας αυτού και ευλόγησε τον Θεόν και είπε· 29Νυν απολύεις τον δούλον σου, δέσποτα, κατά το ρήμα σου, εν ειρήνη· 30διότι είδον οι οφθαλμοί μου το σωτήριόν σου, 31το οποίον ητοίμασας ενώπιον πάντων των λαών, 32φως εις φωτισμόν των εθνών και δόξαν του λαού σου Ισραήλ. 33Και ο Ιωσήφ και η μήτηρ αυτού εθαύμαζον διά τα λεγόμενα περί αυτού. 34Και ευλόγησεν αυτούς ο Συμεών, και είπε προς Μαριάμ την μητέρα αυτού· Ιδού, ούτος κείται εις πτώσιν και ανάστασιν πολλών εν τω Ισραήλ και εις σημείον αντιλεγόμενον. 35Και σου δε αυτής την ψυχήν ρομφαία θέλει διαπεράσει, διά να ανακαλυφθώσιν οι διαλογισμοί πολλών καρδιών. 36Και υπήρχέ τις Άννα προφήτις, θυγάτηρ Φανουήλ, εκ της φυλής Ασήρ· αύτη ήτο πολύ προβεβηκυία εις ηλικίαν, ήτις έζησε μετά του ανδρός αυτής επτά έτη από της παρθενίας αυτής, 37και αύτη ήτο χήρα ως ετών ογδοήκοντα τεσσάρων, ήτις δεν απεμακρύνετο από του ιερού, νύκτα και ημέραν λατρεύουσα τον Θεόν εν νηστείαις και προσευχαίς· 38και αύτη φθάσασα εν αυτή τη ώρα, εδοξολόγει τον Κύριον και ελάλει περί αυτού προς πάντας τους προσμένοντας λύτρωσιν εν Ιερουσαλήμ. 39Και αφού ετελείωσαν πάντα τα κατά τον νόμον του Κυρίου, υπέστρεψαν εις την Γαλιλαίαν, εις την πόλιν αυτών Ναζαρέτ. 40Το δε παιδίον ηύξανε και εδυναμούτο κατά το πνεύμα πληρούμενον σοφίας, και χάρις Θεού ήτο επ' αυτό. 41Επορεύοντο δε οι γονείς αυτού κατ' έτος εις Ιερουσαλήμ εν τη εορτή του πάσχα. 42Και ότε έγεινεν ετών δώδεκα, αφού ανέβησαν εις Ιεροσόλυμα κατά το έθος της εορτής 43και ετελείωσαν τας ημέρας, ενώ αυτοί υπέστρεφον, το παιδίον ο Ιησούς έμεινεν οπίσω εν Ιερουσαλήμ, και δεν ενόησεν ο Ιωσήφ και η μήτηρ αυτού. 44Νομίσαντες δε ότι αυτός ήτο εν τη συνοδία, ήλθον μιας ημέρας οδόν και ανεζήτουν αυτόν μεταξύ των συγγενών και των γνωρίμων. 45Και μη ευρόντες αυτόν, υπέστρεψαν εις Ιερουσαλήμ ζητούντες αυτόν. 46Και μετά τρεις ημέρας εύρον αυτόν εν τω ιερώ καθήμενον εν μέσω των διδασκάλων και ακούοντα αυτόν και ερωτώντα αυτούς. 47Εξίσταντο δε πάντες οι ακούοντες αυτόν διά την σύνεσιν και τας αποκρίσεις αυτού. 48Και ιδόντες αυτόν εξεπλάγησαν, και είπε προς αυτόν η μήτηρ αυτού· Τέκνον, διά τι έπραξας εις ημάς ούτως; ιδού, ο πατήρ σου και εγώ καταλυπούμενοι σε εζητούμεν. 49Και είπε προς αυτούς· Διά τι με εζητείτε; δεν ηξεύρετε ότι πρέπει να ήμαι εις τα του Πατρός μου; 50Και αυτοί δεν ενόησαν τον λόγον, τον οποίον ελάλησε προς αυτούς. 51Και κατέβη μετ' αυτών και ήλθεν εις Ναζαρέτ, και ήτο υποτασσόμενος εις αυτούς. 1Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. 4Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; 5to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. 6While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. 7She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. 9Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. 11For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.” 13Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying, 14“Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.” 15When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said one to another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough. 17When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child. 18All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. 19But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them. 21When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, 28then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29“Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace; 30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; 32a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.” 33Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him, 34and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. 35Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” 36There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, 37and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshiping with fastings and petitions night and day. 38Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem. 39When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. 41His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover. 42When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast, 43and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it, 44but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. 47All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.” 49He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them. 51And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

En als de ouders het Kindeken Jezus inbrachten, om naar de gewoonte der wet met Hem te doen; 28Zo nam hij Hetzelve in zijn armen, en loofde God, en zeide: 29Nu laat Gij, Heere! Uw dienstknecht gaan in vrede naar Uw woord; 30Want mijn ogen hebben Uw zaligheid gezien, 31Die Gij bereid hebt voor het aangezicht van al de volken; 32Een Licht tot verlichting der heidenen, en tot heerlijkheid van Uw volk Israel. 33En Jozef en Zijn moeder verwonderden zich over hetgeen van Hem gezegd werd. 34En Simeon zegende henlieden, en zeide tot Maria, Zijn moeder: Zie, Deze wordt gezet tot een val en opstanding veler in Israel, en tot een teken, dat wedersproken zal worden. 35(En ook een zwaard zal door uw eigen ziel gaan) opdat de gedachten uit vele harten geopenbaard worden. 36En er was Anna, een profetesse, een dochter van Fanuel, uit den stam van Aser; deze was tot groten ouderdom gekomen, welke met haar man zeven jaren had geleefd van haar maagdom af. 37En zij was een weduwe van omtrent vier en tachtig jaren, dewelke niet week uit den tempel, met vasten en bidden, God dienende nacht en dag. 38En deze, te dierzelfder ure daarbij komende, heeft insgelijks den Heere beleden, en sprak van Hem tot allen, die de verlossing in Jeruzalem verwachtten. 39En als zij alles voleindigd hadden, wat naar de wet des Heeren te doen was, keerden zij weder naar Galilea, tot hun stad Nazareth. 40En het Kindeken wies op, en werd gesterkt in den geest, en vervuld met wijsheid; en de genade Gods was over Hem. 41En Zijn ouders reisden alle jaar naar Jeruzalem, op het feest van pascha. 42En toen Hij twaalf jaren oud geworden was, en zij naar Jeruzalem opgegaan waren, naar de gewoonte van den feestdag; 43En de dagen aldaar voleindigd hadden, toen zij wederkeerden, bleef het Kind Jezus te Jeruzalem, en Jozef en Zijn moeder wisten het niet. 44Maar menende, dat Hij in het gezelschap op den weg was, gingen zij een dagreize, en zochten Hem onder de magen, en onder de bekenden. 45En als zij Hem niet vonden, keerden zij wederom naar Jeruzalem, Hem zoekende. 46En het geschiedde, na drie dagen, dat zij Hem vonden in den tempel, zittende in het midden der leraren, hen horende, en hen ondervragende. 47En allen, die Hem hoorden, ontzetten zich over Zijn verstand en antwoorden. 48En zij, Hem ziende, werden verslagen; en Zijn moeder zeide tot Hem: Kind! waarom hebt Gij ons zo gedaan? Zie, Uw vader en ik hebben U met angst gezocht. 49En Hij zeide tot hen: Wat is het, dat gij Mij gezocht hebt? Wist gij niet, dat Ik moet zijn in de dingen Mijns Vaders? 50En zij verstonden het woord niet, dat Hij tot hen sprak. 51En Hij ging met hen af, en kwam te Nazareth, en was hun onderdanig. En Zijn moeder bewaarde al deze dingen in haar hart. 52En Jezus nam toe in wijsheid, en in grootte, en in genade bij God en de mensen.
