1Γνωρίζεις τον καιρόν του τοκετού των αγρίων αιγών του βράχου; δύνασαι να σημειώσης πότε γεννώσιν αι έλαφοι; 2Δύνασαι να αριθμήσης τους μήνας τους οποίους πληρούσιν; ή γνωρίζεις τον καιρόν του τοκετού αυτών; 3Αυταί συγκάμπτονται, γεννώσι τα παιδία αυτών, ελευθερόνονται από των ωδίνων αυτών. 4Τα τέκνα αυτών ενδυναμούνται, αυξάνουσιν εν τη πεδιάδι· εξέρχονται και δεν επιστρέφουσι πλέον εις αυτάς. 5Τις εξαπέστειλεν ελεύθερον τον άγριον όνον; ή τις έλυσε τους δεσμούς αυτού; 6του οποίου οικίαν έκαμον την έρημον, και την αλμυρίδα κατοικίαν αυτού. 7Καταγελά του θορύβου της πόλεως· δεν ακούει την κραυγήν του εργοδιώκτου. 8Κατασκοπεύει τα όρη διά βοσκήν αυτού, και υπάγει ζητών κατόπιν παντός είδους χλόης. 9Θέλει ευχαριστηθή ο μονόκερως να σε δουλεύη, ή θέλει διανυκτερεύσει εν τη φάτνη σου; 10Δύνασαι να δέσης τον μονόκερων με τον δεσμόν αυτού προς αροτρίασιν; ή θέλει ομαλίζει τας πεδιάδας οπίσω σου; 11Θέλεις βάλει το θάρρος σου εις αυτόν, διότι η δύναμις αυτού είναι μεγάλη; ή θέλεις αφήσει την εργασίαν σου επ' αυτόν; 12Θέλεις εμπιστευθή εις αυτόν να σοι φέρη τον σπόρον σου και να συνάξη αυτόν εν τω αλωνίω σου; 13Έδωκας συ τας ώραίας πτέρυγας εις τους ταώνας; ή πτέρυγας και πτερά εις την στρουθοκάμηλον; 14ήτις αφίνει τα ωά αυτής εις την γην και θάλπει αυτά επί του χώματος, 15και λησμονεί ότι ο πους ενδέχεται να συντρίψη αυτά, ή το θηρίον του αγρού να καταπατήση αυτά· 16σκληρύνεται κατά των τέκνων αυτής, ως να μη ήσαν αυτής· ματαίως εκοπίασε, μη φοβουμένη· 17διότι ο Θεός εστέρησεν αυτήν από σοφίας και δεν εμοίρασεν εις αυτήν σύνεσιν· 18οσάκις σηκόνεται όρθιος, καταγελά του ίππου και του αναβάτου αυτού. 19Συ έδωκας δύναμιν εις τον ίππον; περιενέδυσας τον τράχηλον αυτού με βροντήν; 20συ κάμνεις αυτόν να πηδά ως ακρίς; το γαυρίαμα των μυκτήρων αυτού είναι τρομερόν· 21ανασκάπτει εν τη κοιλάδι και αγάλλεται εις την δύναμιν αυτού· εξέρχεται εις απάντησιν των όπλων· 22καταγελά του φόβου και δεν τρομάζει· ουδέ στρέφει από προσώπου ρομφαίας· 23η φαρέτρα κροταλίζει κατ' αυτού, η εξαστράπτουσα λόγχη και το δόρυ. 24Καταπίνει την γην εν αγριότητι και μανία· και δεν πιστεύει ότι ηχεί σάλπιγξ· 25άμα δε τη φωνή της σάλπιγγος, λέγει, Α, α και μακρόθεν οσφραίνεται την μάχην, την κραυγήν των στρατηγών και τον αλαλαγμόν. 26Διά της σοφίας σου πετά ο ιέραξ και απλόνει τας πτέρυγας αυτού προς νότον; 27Εις την προσταγήν σου ανυψούται ο αετός και κάμνει την φωλεάν αυτού εν τοις υψηλοίς; 28Κατοικεί επί βράχου και διατρίβει, επί αποτόμου βράχου και επί αβάτων τόπων· 29εκείθεν αναζητεί τροφήν· οι οφθαλμοί αυτού σκοπεύουσι μακρόθεν· 30και οι νεοσσοί αυτού αίμα πίνουσι· και όπου πτώματα, εκεί και αυτός.
1“Do you know the time when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears fawns? 2Can you number the months that they fulfill? Or do you know the time when they give birth? 3They bow themselves, they bear their young. They end their labor pains. 4Their young ones become strong. They grow up in the open field. They go out, and don’t return again. 5“Who has set the wild donkey free? Or who has loosened the bonds of the swift donkey, 6Whose home I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling place? 7He scorns the tumult of the city, neither does he hear the shouting of the driver. 8The range of the mountains is his pasture, He searches after every green thing. 9“Will the wild ox be content to serve you? Or will he stay by your feeding trough? 10Can you hold the wild ox in the furrow with his harness? Or will he till the valleys after you? 11Will you trust him, because his strength is great? Or will you leave to him your labor? 12Will you confide in him, that he will bring home your seed, and gather the grain of your threshing floor? 13“The wings of the ostrich wave proudly; but are they the feathers and plumage of love? 14For she leaves her eggs on the earth, warms them in the dust, 15and forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild animal may trample them. 16She deals harshly with her young ones, as if they were not hers. Though her labor is in vain, she is without fear, 17because God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has he imparted to her understanding. 18When she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider. 19“Have you given the horse might? Have you clothed his neck with a quivering mane? 20Have you made him to leap as a locust? The glory of his snorting is awesome. 21He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength. He goes out to meet the armed men. 22He mocks at fear, and is not dismayed, neither does he turn back from the sword. 23The quiver rattles against him, the flashing spear and the javelin. 24He eats up the ground with fierceness and rage, neither does he stand still at the sound of the trumpet. 25As often as the trumpet sounds he snorts, ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. 26“Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and stretches her wings toward the south? 27Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up, and makes his nest on high? 28On the cliff he dwells, and makes his home, on the point of the cliff, and the stronghold. 29From there he spies out the prey. His eyes see it afar off. 30His young ones also suck up blood. Where the slain are, there he is.”

Of de vederen des ooievaars, en des struisvogels? 14Dat zij haar eieren in de aarde laat, en in het stof die verwarmt. 15En vergeet, dat de voet die drukken kan, en de dieren des velds die vertrappen kunnen? 16Zij verhardt zich tegen haar jongen, alsof zij de hare niet waren; haar arbeid is te vergeefs, omdat zij zonder vreze is. 17Want God heeft haar van wijsheid ontbloot, en heeft haar des verstands niet medegedeeld. 18Als het tijd is, verheft zij zich in de hoogte; zij belacht het paard en zijn rijder. 19Zult gij het paard sterkte geven? Kunt gij zijn hals met donder bekleden? 20Zult gij het beroeren als een sprinkhaan? De pracht van zijn gesnuif is een verschrikking. 21Het graaft in den grond, en het is vrolijk in zijn kracht; en trekt uit, den geharnaste tegemoet. 22Het belacht de vreze, en wordt niet ontsteld, en keert niet wederom vanwege het zwaard. 23Tegen hem ratelt de pijlkoker, het vlammig ijzer des spies en der lans. 24Met schudding en beroering slokt het de aarde op, en gelooft niet, dat het is het geluid der bazuin. 25In het volle geklank der bazuin, zegt het: Heah! en ruikt den krijg van verre, den donder der vorsten en het gejuich. 26Vliegt de sperwer door uw verstand, en breidt hij zijn vleugelen uit naar het zuiden? 27Is het naar uw bevel, dat de arend zich omhoog verheft, en dat hij zijn nest in de hoogte maakt? 28Hij woont en vernacht in de steenrots, op de scherpte der steenrots en der vaste plaats. 29Van daar speurt hij de spijze op; zijn ogen zien van verre af. 30Ook zuipen zijn jongen bloed; en waar verslagenen zijn, daar is hij.
