1Όταν εξέλθης εις μάχην εναντίον των εχθρών σου, και ίδης ίππους και αμάξας, λαόν περισσότερον παρά σε, μη φοβηθής αυτούς· διότι Κύριος ο Θεός σου είναι μετά σου, όστις σε ανεβίβασεν εκ γης Αιγύπτου. 2Και όταν πλησιάσητε εις την μάχην, ο ιερεύς θέλει προσέλθει και λαλήσει προς τον λαόν, 3και θέλει ειπεί προς αυτούς, Άκουε, Ισραήλ· σεις πλησιάζετε σήμερον εις την μάχην κατά των εχθρών σας· ας μη δειλιάση η καρδία σας, μη φοβηθήτε μηδέ τρομάξητε μηδέ εκπλαγήτε από προσώπου αυτών· 4διότι Κύριος ο Θεός σας είναι ο προπορευόμενος μεθ' υμών, διά να πολεμήση υπέρ υμών εναντίον των εχθρών σας, διά να σώση υμάς. 5Και οι άρχοντες θέλουσι λαλήσει προς τον λαόν, λέγοντες, Τις άνθρωπος ωκοδόμησεν οικίαν νέαν και δεν έκαμεν εγκαινιασμόν αυτής; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, μήποτε αποθάνη εν τη μάχη και εγκαινιάση αυτήν άλλος άνθρωπος. 6Και τις άνθρωπος εφύτευσεν αμπελώνα και δεν ευφράνθη εξ αυτού; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, μήποτε αποθάνη εν τη μάχη, και ευφρανθή εξ αυτού άλλος άνθρωπος. 7Και τις άνθρωπος ηρραβωνίσθη γυναίκα και δεν έλαβεν αυτήν; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, μήποτε αποθάνη εν τη μάχη, και λάβη αυτήν άλλος άνθρωπος. 8Και οι άρχοντες θέλουσι λαλήσει έτι προς τον λαόν και θέλουσιν ειπεί, Τις άνθρωπος είναι δειλός και άκαρδος; ας αναχωρήση και ας επιστρέψη εις την οικίαν αυτού, διά να μη δειλιάση η καρδία των αδελφών αυτού, ως η καρδία αυτού. 9Και αφού τελειώσωσιν οι άρχοντες λαλούντες προς τον λαόν, θέλουσι καταστήσει αρχηγούς των στρατευμάτων, διά να προΐστανται του λαού. 10Όταν πλησιάσης εις πόλιν διά να εκπολεμήσης αυτήν, τότε κάλεσον αυτήν εις ειρήνην· 11και εάν σοι αποκριθή ειρηνικά και ανοίξη εις σε, τότε πας ο λαός ο ευρισκόμενος εν αυτή θέλει γείνει υποτελής εις σε και θέλει σε δουλεύει· 12εάν όμως δεν κάμη ειρήνην μετά σου, αλλά σε πολεμήση τότε θέλεις πολιορκήσει αυτήν· 13και αφού Κύριος ο Θεός σου παραδώση αυτήν εις τας χείρας σου, θέλεις πατάξει πάντα τα αρσενικά αυτής εν στόματι μαχαίρας· 14τας δε γυναίκας και τα βρέφη και τα κτήνη και πάντα όσα ευρίσκονται εν τη πόλει, πάντα τα λάφυρα αυτής, θέλεις λάβει εις σεαυτόν· και θέλεις τρώγει τα λάφυρα των εχθρών σου, όσα Κύριος ο Θεός σου έδωκεν εις σε. 15Ούτω θέλεις κάμει εις πάσας τας πόλεις τας πολύ μακράν από σου, αίτινες δεν είναι εκ των πόλεων των εθνών τούτων· 16εκ των πόλεων όμως των λαών τούτων, τας οποίας Κύριος ο Θεός σου δίδει εις σε κληρονομίαν, δεν θέλεις αφήσει ζων ουδέν έχον πνοήν· 17αλλά θέλεις εξολοθρεύσει αυτούς κατά κράτος, τους Χετταίους και τους Αμορραίους τους Χαναναίους και τους Φερεζαίους τους Ευαίους και τους Ιεβουσαίους, καθώς προσέταξεν εις σε Κύριος ο Θεός σου· 18διά να μη σας διδάξωσι να πράττητε κατά πάντα τα βδελύγματα αυτών, τα οποία έκαμον εις τους θεούς αυτών, και αμαρτήσητε εναντίον Κυρίου του Θεού σας. 19Όταν πολιορκής πόλιν τινά ημέρας πολλάς, πολεμών αυτήν διά να εξουσιάσης αυτήν, δεν θέλεις εξολοθρεύσει τα δένδρα αυτής, καταφέρων επ' αυτά πέλεκυν· διότι εξ αυτών δύνασαι να τρέφησαι και δεν θέλεις κόψει αυτά. Μήπως είναι άνθρωπος το δένδρον του αγρού, ώστε να έλθη εναντίον σου εν τη πολιορκία; 20Μόνον τα δένδρα, όσα γνωρίζεις ότι δεν είναι δένδρα τροφής, ταύτα θέλεις εξολοθρεύσει και εκκόψει και θέλεις οικοδομήσει περιχαρακώματα εναντίον της πόλεως, ήτις πολεμεί προς σε, εωσού παραδοθή.
1When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. 2It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people, 3and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; 4for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” 5The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. 6What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit. 7What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.” 8The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.” 9It shall be, when the officers have finished speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people. 10When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it. 11It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become forced laborers to you, and shall serve you. 12If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it. 13When Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword; 14but the women, the little ones, the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its plunder, you shall take for plunder for yourself. You may use the plunder of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you. 15Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes; 17but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you; 18that they not teach you to follow all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God. 19When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them; for you may eat of them. You shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged by you? 20Only the trees that you know are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down. You shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.

Die ga henen en kere weder naar zijn huis; opdat het hart zijner broederen niet smelte, gelijk zijn hart. 9En het zal geschieden, als die ambtlieden geeindigd zullen hebben te spreken tot het volk, zo zullen zij oversten der heiren aan de spits des volks bestellen. 10Wanneer gij nadert tot een stad om tegen haar te strijden, zo zult gij haar den vrede toeroepen. 11En het zal geschieden, indien zij u vrede zal antwoorden, en u opendoen, zo zal al het volk, dat daarin gevonden wordt, u cijnsbaar zijn, en u dienen. 12Doch zo zij geen vrede met u zal maken, maar krijg tegen u voeren, zo zult gij haar belegeren. 13En de HEERE, uw God, zal haar in uw hand geven; en gij zult alles, wat mannelijk daarin is, slaan met de scherpte des zwaards; 14Behalve de vrouwen, en de kinderkens, en de beesten, en al wat in de stad zijn zal, al haar buit zult gij voor u roven; en gij zult eten den buit uwer vijanden, dien u de HEERE, uw God, gegeven heeft. 15Alzo zult gij aan alle steden doen, die zeer verre van u zijn, die niet zijn van de steden dezer volken. 16Maar van de steden dezer volken, die u de HEERE, uw God, ten erve geeft, zult gij niets laten leven, dat adem heeft. 17Maar gij zult ze ganselijk verbannen: de Hethieten, en de Amorieten, en de Kanaanieten, en de Ferezieten, de Hevieten, en de Jebusieten, gelijk als u de HEERE, uw God, geboden heeft; 18Opdat zij ulieden niet leren te doen naar al hun gruwelen, die zij hun goden gedaan hebben, en gij zondigt tegen den HEERE, uw God. 19Wanneer gij een stad vele dagen zult belegeren, strijdende tegen haar, om die in te nemen, zo zult gij haar geboomte niet verderven, de bijl daaraan drijvende; want gij zult daarvan eten; daarom zult gij dat niet afhouwen (want het geboomte van het veld is des mensen spijze), opdat het voor uw aangezicht kome tot een bolwerk. 20Maar het geboomte, hetwelk gij kennen zult, dat het geen geboomte ter spijze is, dat zult gij verderven en afhouwen; en gij zult een bolwerk bouwen tegen deze stad, dewelke tegen u krijg voert, totdat zij ten onderga.
