1Οκτώ ετών ηλικίας ήτο ο Ιωσίας ότε εβασίλευσε, και εβασίλευσεν εν Ιερουσαλήμ έτη τριάκοντα και έν· το δε όνομα της μητρός αυτού ήτο Ιεδιδά, θυγάτηρ του Αδαΐου, από Βοσκάθ. 2Και έπραξε το ευθές ενώπιον του Κυρίου και περιεπάτησεν εις πάσας τας οδούς Δαβίδ του πατρός αυτού, και δεν εξέκλινε δεξιά ή αριστερά. 3Και εν τω δεκάτω ογδόω έτει του βασιλέως Ιωσία, εξαπέστειλεν ο βασιλεύς τον Σαφάν, υιόν του Αζαλίου υιού του Μεσουλλάμ, τον γραμματέα, εις τον οίκον του Κυρίου, λέγων, 4Ανάβα προς Χελκίαν τον ιερέα τον μέγαν, και ειπέ να απαριθμήση το αργύριον το εισαχθέν εις τον οίκον του Κυρίου, το οποίον οι φυλάττοντες την θύραν εσύναξαν παρά του λαού· 5και ας παραδώσωσιν αυτό εις την χείρα των ποιούντων τα έργα, των επιστατούντων εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου· οι δε ας δώσωσιν αυτό εις τους εργαζομένους τα έργα τα εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου, διά να επισκευάσωσι τα χαλάσματα του οίκου, 6εις τους ξυλουργούς και οικοδόμους και τοιχοποιούς, και διά να αγοράσωσι ξύλα και λίθους λατομητούς, διά να επισκευάσωσι τον οίκον. 7πλην δεν εγίνετο μετ' αυτών ουδείς λογαριασμός περί του διδομένου εις τας χείρας αυτών αργυρίου, διότι ειργάζοντο εν πίστει. 8Είπε δε Χελκίας ο ιερεύς ο μέγας προς Σαφάν τον γραμματέα, Εύρηκα το βιβλίον του νόμου εν τω οίκω του Κυρίου. Και έδωκεν ο Χελκίας το βιβλίον εις τον Σαφάν, και ανέγνωσεν αυτό. 9Και ήλθε Σαφάν ο γραμματεύς προς τον βασιλέα και ανέφερε λόγον προς τον βασιλέα και είπεν, Οι δούλοί σου εσύναξαν το αργύριον το ευρεθέν εν τω οίκω, και παρέδωκαν αυτό εις την χείρα των ποιούντων τα έργα, των επιστατούντων εις τον οίκον του Κυρίου. 10Και απήγγειλε Σαφάν ο γραμματεύς προς τον βασιλέα, λέγων, Χελκίας ο ιερεύς έδωκεν εις εμέ βιβλίον. Και ανέγνωσεν αυτό ο Σαφάν ενώπιον του βασιλέως. 11Και ως ήκουσεν ο βασιλεύς τους λόγους του βιβλίου του νόμου, διέσχισε τα ιμάτια αυτού. 12Και προσέταξεν ο βασιλεύς Χελκίαν τον ιερέα και Αχικάμ τον υιόν του Σαφάν και Αχβώρ τον υιόν του Μιχαΐου και Σαφάν τον γραμματέα και Ασαΐαν τον δούλον του βασιλέως, λέγων, 13Υπάγετε, ερωτήσατε τον Κύριον περί εμού και περί του λαού και περί παντός του Ιούδα, περί των λόγων του βιβλίου τούτου, το οποίον ευρέθη· διότι μεγάλη είναι η οργή του Κυρίου η εξαφθείσα εναντίον ημών, επειδή οι πατέρες ημών δεν υπήκουσαν εις τους λόγους του βιβλίου τούτου, ώστε να πράττωσι κατά πάντα τα γεγραμμένα περί ημών. 14Τότε Χελκίας ο ιερεύς, και Αχικάμ και Αχβώρ και Σαφάν και Ασαΐας, υπήγαν εις την Όλδαν την προφήτιν, την γυναίκα του Σαλλούμ υιού του Τικβά, υιού του Αράς, του ιματιοφύλακος· κατώκει δε αύτη εν Ιερουσαλήμ, κατά το Μισνέ· και ώμίλησαν μετ' αυτής. 15Και είπε προς αυτούς, Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ· Είπατε προς τον άνθρωπον, όστις σας απέστειλε προς εμέ, 16Ούτω λέγει Κύριος· Ιδού εγώ επιφέρω κακά επί τον τόπον τούτον και επί τους κατοίκους αυτού, πάντας τους λόγους του βιβλίου, το οποίον ο βασιλεύς του Ιούδα ανέγνωσε· 17διότι με εγκατέλιπον και εθυμίασαν εις άλλους θεούς, διά να με παροργίσωσι διά πάντων των έργων των χειρών αυτών· διά τούτο θέλει εκχυθή ο θυμός μου επί τον τόπον τούτον και δεν θέλει σβεσθή. 18Προς τον βασιλέα όμως του Ιούδα, όστις σας απέστειλε να ερωτήσητε τον Κύριον, ούτω θέλετε ειπεί προς αυτόν· Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ· Περί των λόγων τους οποίους ήκουσας, 19επειδή η καρδία σου ηπαλύνθη, και εταπεινώθης ενώπιον του Κυρίου, ότε ήκουσας όσα ελάλησα εναντίον του τόπου τούτου και εναντίον των κατοίκων αυτού, ότι θέλουσι κατασταθή ερήμωσις και κατάρα, και διέσχισας τα ιμάτιά σου και έκλαυσας ενώπιόν μου· διά τούτο και εγώ επήκουσα, λέγει Κύριος· 20ιδού λοιπόν, εγώ θέλω σε συνάξει εις τους πατέρας σου, και θέλεις συναχθή εις τον τάφον σου εν ειρήνη· και δεν θέλουσιν ιδεί οι οφθαλμοί σου πάντα τα κακά, τα οποία εγώ επιφέρω επί τον τόπον τούτον. 1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in all the way of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3In the eighteenth year of king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to Yahweh’s house, saying, 4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into Yahweh’s house, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people. 5Let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and let them give it to the workmen who are in Yahweh’s house, to repair the breaches of the house, 6to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house. 7However there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.” 8Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of Yahweh’s house.” 10Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Shaphan read it before the king. 11When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes. 12The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.” 14So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her. 15She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 16“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read. 17Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’” 18But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Concerning the words which you have heard, 19because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh. 20‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” They brought back this message to the king.

En Safan las dat voor het aangezicht des konings. 11Het geschiedde nu, als de koning de woorden des wetboeks hoorde, dat hij zijn klederen scheurde. 12En de koning gebood Hilkia, den priester, en Ahikam, den zoon van Safan, en Achbor, den zoon van Michaja, en Safan, den schrijver, en Asaja, den knecht des konings, zeggende: 13Gaat henen, vraagt den HEERE voor mij, en voor het volk, en voor het ganse Juda, over de woorden dezes boeks, dat gevonden is; want de grimmigheid des HEEREN is groot, dewelke tegen ons aangestoken is, omdat onze vaderen niet gehoord hebben naar de woorden dezes boeks, om te doen naar al wat voor ons geschreven is. 14Toen ging de priester Hilkia, en Ahikam, en Achbor, en Safan, en Asaja henen tot de profetes Hulda, de huisvrouw van Sallum, den zoon van Tikva, den zoon van Harhas, den klederbewaarder (zij nu woonde te Jeruzalem, in het tweede deel), en zij spraken tot haar. 15En zij zeide tot hen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Zegt tot den man, die u tot mij gezonden heeft: 16Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over deze plaats brengen, en voer haar inwoners, namelijk al de woorden des boeks, dat de koning van Juda gelezen heeft. 17Daarom dat zij Mij verlaten, en anderen goden gerookt hebben, opdat zij Mij tot toorn verwekten met al het werk hunner handen, zo zal Mijn grimmigheid aangestoken worden, tegen deze plaats, en niet uitgeblust worden. 18Maar tot den koning van Juda, die u gezonden heeft, om den HEERE te vragen, alzo zult gij tot hem zeggen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Aangaande de woorden, die gij gehoord hebt; 19Omdat uw hart week geworden is, en gij u voor het aangezicht des HEEREN vernederd hebt, als gij hoordet, wat Ik gesproken heb tegen deze plaats en derzelver inwoners, dat zij tot een verwoesting en vloek zullen worden, en dat gij uw klederen gescheurd en voor Mijn aangezicht geweend hebt; zo heb Ik u ook verhoord, spreekt de HEERE. 20Daarom zie, Ik zal u verzamelen tot uw vaderen, en gij zult met vrede in uw graf verzameld worden, en uw ogen zullen al het kwaad niet zien, dat Ik over deze plaats brengen zal. En zij brachten den koning het antwoord weder.
