1Trong ngày đó, người ta đọc sách Môi-se có dân sự nghe; trong đó có chép rằng người Am-môn và người Mô-áp đời đời không được vào hội của Ðức Chúa Trời, 2bởi vì chúng nó không đem bánh và nước đến đón dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, song dùng bạc thỉnh Ba-la-am đến rủa sả dân Y-sơ-ra-ên (nhưng Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi đổi sự rủa sả ra sự phước hạnh). 3Xảy khi chúng đã nghe luật pháp rồi, bèn phân rẽ khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên các dân ngoại bang. 4Vả, trước việc đó, thầy tế lễ Ê-li-a-síp, mà đã được lập coi sóc các phòng của đền Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi, 5và là bà con với Tô-bi-gia, có sắm sửa cho người ấy một cái phòng lớn, là nơi trước người ta dùng để những của lễ chay, hương liệu, khí dụng, thuế một phần mười về lúa mì, rượu mới, và dầu, tức những vật theo lệ đã định cho người Lê-vi, kẻ ca hát, và người canh giữ cửa, luôn với của lễ dâng giơ lên của thầy tế lễ. 6Khi các điều đó xảy đến thì không có tôi ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; vì nhằm năm thứ ba mươi hai đời Aït-ta-xét-xe, vua Ba-by-lôn, tôi mắc phải trở về cùng vua; cuối một ít lâu, tôi có xin phép vua đặng đi. 7Tôi đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, bèn hiểu điều ác mà Ê-li-a-síp vì Tô-bi-gia đã làm ra, vì có sắm sửa cho người một cái phòng trong hành lang của đền Ðức Chúa Trời. 8Tôi thấy điều đó lấy làm cực tệ, nên quăng ra khỏi phòng ấy các vật dụng của nhà Tô-bi-gia. 9Ðoạn, tôi biểu người ta dọn cái phòng ấy cho sạch sẽ; kẻ ấy tôi đem vào lại các khí dụng của đền Ðức Chúa Trời, của lễ chay và hương liệu. 10Tôi cũng hay rằng người ta không có cấp các phần của người Lê-vi cho họ; vì vậy, những kẻ ca hát và người Lê-vi hầu việc, ai nấy đều đã trốn về đồng ruộng mình. 11Tôi bèn quở trách các quan trưởng, mà rằng: Cớ sao đền của Ðức Chúa Trời bị bỏ như vậy? Ðoạn, tôi hiệp lại chúng mà đặt họ trong chức cũ mình. 12Bấy giờ, cả Giu-đa đều đem đến trong kho thuế một phần mười về lúa mì, rượu mới, và dầu. 13Tôi đặt Sê-lê-mia, thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc, ký lục, và Phê-đa-gia trong các người Lê-vi, coi các kho tàng; còn Ha-nan, con trai của Xác-cua, cháu Mát-ta-nia, làm phó; các người ấy được kể là trung thành, và bổn phận chúng là phân phát vật cho anh em mình. 14Ðức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! vì cớ điều này, xin nhớ đến tôi, và chớ bôi xóa các việc tốt lành mà tôi đã làm vì đền của Ðức Chúa Trời tôi và về điều phải gìn giữ tại đó. 15Về lúc đó, tôi thấy trong Giu-đa, mấy người ép nho nơi máy ép rượu nhằm ngày sa-bát, đem bó lúa mình vào, chở nó trên lừa, và cũng chở rượu, trái nho, trái vả, và các vật nặng, mà đem về Giê-ru-sa-lem trong ngày sa-bát. Ngày chúng nó bán vật thực ấy, tôi có làm chứng nghịch cùng chúng nó. 16Cũng có người Ty-rơ ở tại đó, đem cá và các thứ hàng hóa đến bán cho người Giu-đa và tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem trong ngày sa-bát. 17Bấy giờ tôi quở trách các người tước vị Giu-đa, mà rằng: Việc xấu xa các ngươi làm đây là chi, mà làm cho ô uế ngày sa-bát? 18Tổ phụ các ngươi há chẳng đã làm như vậy sao? Nên nỗi Ðức Chúa Trời há chẳng có dẫn tai họa kia đến trên chúng ta và trên thành này ư? Còn các ngươi làm ô uế ngày sa-bát mà tăng thêm cơn thạnh nộ cho Y-sơ-ra-ên! 19Ấy vậy, khi các cửa Giê-ru-sa-lem khởi khuất trong bóng tối trước ngày sa-bát, tôi bèn truyền người ta đóng cửa lại và dặn biểu chúng nó chỉ mở nó ra sau ngày sa-bát; lại cắt đặt mấy kẻ trong đầy tớ tôi giữ cửa để không ai gánh chở đồ vào thành trong ngày sa-bát. 20Vậy, kẻ buôn người bán các thứ hàng hóa một hai lần ban đêm phải ngủ ở ngoài thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. 21Ðoạn, tôi quở trách chúng nó mà rằng: Cớ sao các ngươi ban đêm ngủ tại trước vách thành như vậy? Nếu các ngươi còn làm nữa, tất cả sẽ tra tay trên các ngươi. Từ lúc đó về sau, chúng nó không có đến nhằm ngày sa-bát nữa. 22Tôi dạy biểu người Lê-vi và đến canh giữ các cửa, đặng biệt ngày sa-bát ra thánh. Hỡi Ðức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! xin hãy vì tôi nhớ đến điều đó, và xin thương xót tôi tùy sự nhân từ lớn lao của Ngài. 23Cũng trong lúc đó, tôi thấy những người Giu-đa lấy đờn bà Ách-đốt, Am-môn, và Mô-áp, làm vợ; 24con cái của chúng nó nói phần nửa tiếng Ách-đốt, không biết nói tiếng Giu-đa, nhưng nói tùy theo tiếng của dân này hay là dân kia. 25Tôi quở trách chúng nó, rủa sả chúng nó, đánh đập một vài người trong chúng nó, nhổ tóc chúng nó biểu chúng nó chỉ Ðức Chúa Trời thề, mà rằng: Các ngươi sẽ không gả con gái mình cho con trai họ, hay là cưới con gái họ cho con trai mình, hoặc là cưới cho chánh mình các ngươi! 26Sa-lô-môn, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên há chẳng có phạm tội trong điều đó sao? Vả, trong nhiều dân tộc không có một vua nào giống như người; người được Ðức Chúa Trời đặt người làm vua trên cả Y-sơ-ra-ên: dẫu vậy, người cũng bị đờn bà ngoại bang xui cho phạm tội! 27Chúng ta há sẽ nghe theo các ngươi mà làm những điều ác lớn này, lấy người đờn bà ngoại bang mà vi phạm cùng Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta sao? 28Có một trong các con trai của Giô-gia-đa, cháu Ê-li-a-síp, thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm, là rể của San-ba-lát, người Hô-rôn; vì cớ ấy tôi đuổi hắn khỏi tôi. 29Hỡi Ðức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! xin nhớ lại chúng nó, vì chúng nó đã làm ô uế chức tế lễ và sự giao ước của chức tế lễ và của người Lê-vi. 30Như vậy, tôi dọn sạch chúng cho khỏi các kẻ ngoại bang, và định ban thứ cho những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi, mỗi người trong chức việc mình; 31cũng khiến dân sự dâng củi theo kỳ nhất định và các thổ sản đầu mùa. 1On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever, 2because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: however our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude. 4Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah, 5had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the wave offerings for the priests. 6But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king, 7and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house. 8It grieved me severely: therefore I threw all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the room. 9Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms: and there brought I again the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense. 10I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled everyone to his field. 11Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place. 12Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries. 13I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers. 14Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances. 15In those days saw I in Judah some men treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food. 16There lived men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day? 18Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” 19It came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside of Jerusalem once or twice. 21Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath. 22I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness. 23In those days also saw I the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: 24and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people. 25I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin. 27Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?” 28One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. 29Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. 30Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work; 31and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.

Doch ik vergaderde hen, en herstelde ze in hun stand. 12Toen bracht gans Juda de tienden van het koren, en van den most, en van de olie, in de schatten. 13En ik stelde tot schatmeesters over de schatten, Selemja, den priester, en Zadok, den schrijver, en Pedaja, uit de Levieten; en aan hun hand Hanan, den zoon van Zakkur, den zoon van Matthanja; want zij werden getrouw geacht, en hun werd opgelegd aan hun broederen uit te delen. 14Gedenk mijner, mijn God, in dezen; en delg mijn weldadigheden niet uit, die ik aan het huis mijns Gods en aan Zijn wachten gedaan heb. 15In dezelfde dagen zag ik in Juda, die persen traden op den sabbat, en die garven inbrachten, die zij op ezels laadden; als ook wijn, druiven en vijgen, en allen last, dien zij te Jeruzalem inbrachten op den sabbatdag; en ik betuigde tegen hen ten dage, als zij eetwaren verkochten. 16Daar waren ook Tyriers binnen, die vis aanbrachten, en alle koopwaren, die zij op den sabbat verkochten aan de kinderen van Juda en te Jeruzalem. 17Zo twistte ik met de edelen van Juda, en zeide tot hen: Wat voor een boos ding is dit, dat gijlieden doet, en ontheiligt den sabbatdag? 18Deden niet uw vaders alzo, en onze God bracht al dit kwaad over ons en over deze stad? En gijlieden maakt de hittige gramschap nog meer over Israel, ontheiligende den sabbat. 19Het geschiedde nu, als de poorten van Jeruzalem schaduw gaven, voor den sabbat, dat ik bevel gaf, en de deuren werden gesloten; en ik beval, dat zij ze niet zouden opendoen tot na den sabbat; en ik stelde van mijn jongens aan de poorten, opdat er geen last zou inkomen op den sabbatdag. 20Toen vernachtten de kramers, en de verkopers van alle koopwaren, buiten voor Jeruzalem, eens of tweemaal. 21Zo betuigde ik tegen hen, en zeide tot hen: Waarom vernacht gijlieden tegenover den muur? Zo gij het weder doet, zal ik de hand aan u slaan. Van dien tijd af kwamen zij niet op den sabbat. 22Voorts zeide ik tot de Levieten, dat zij zich zouden reinigen, en de poorten komen wachten, om den sabbatdag te heiligen. Gedenk mijner ook in dezen, mijn God! en verschoon mij naar de veelheid Uwer goedertierenheid. 23Ook zag ik in die dagen Joden, die Asdodische, Ammonietische en Moabietische vrouwen bij zich hadden doen wonen. 24En hun kinderen spraken half Asdodisch, en zij konden geen Joods spreken, maar naar de taal eens iegelijken volks. 25Zo twistte ik met hen, en vloekte hen, en sloeg sommige mannen van hen, en plukte hun het haar uit; en ik deed hen zweren bij God: Indien gij uw dochteren hun zonen zult geven, en indien gij van hun dochteren voor uw zonen of voor u zult nemen! 26Heeft niet Salomo, de koning van Israel, daarin gezondigd, hoewel er onder vele heidenen geen koning was, gelijk hij, en hij zijn God lief was, en God hem ten koning over gans Israel gesteld had? Ook hem deden de vreemde vrouwen zondigen. 27Zouden wij dan naar ulieden horen, dat gij al dit grote kwaad zoudt doen, overtredende tegen onzen God, doende vreemde vrouwen bij u wonen? 28Ook was er een van de kinderen van Jojada, den zoon van Eljasib, den hogepriester, schoonzoon geworden van Sanballat, den Horoniet; daarom jaagde ik hem van mij weg. 29Gedenk aan hen, mijn God, omdat zij het priesterdom hebben verontreinigd, ja, het verbond des priesterdoms en der Levieten. 30Alzo reinigde ik hen van alle vreemden; en ik bestelde de wachten der priesteren en der Levieten, elk op zijn werk; 31Ook tot het offer des houts, op bestemde tijden, en tot de eerstelingen. Gedenk mijner, mijn God, ten goede.
