1Trưởng lão đạt cho bà được chọn kia cùng con cái bà mà tôi thật yêu dấu, nào những tôi yêu dấu thôi đâu, nhưng hết thảy mọi người biết lẽ thật cũng yêu dấu nữa; 2điều đó, vì cớ chính lẽ thật ở trong chúng ta, lại sẽ ở với chúng ta đời đời: 3nguyền xin ân điển, sự thương xót, sự bình an, bởi Ðức Chúa Trời là Cha, và bởi Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ là Con của Cha, được ở cùng chúng ta, trong lẽ thật và sự yêu thương! 4Tôi có lòng vui mừng lắm mà thấy trong con cái bà có mấy kẻ làm theo lẽ thật, theo điều răn chúng ta đã nhận lãnh nơi Ðức Chúa Cha. 5Hỡi bà được chọn, hiện nay tôi khuyên bà, không phải truyền một điều răn mới, nhưng nhắc lại điều chúng ta đã nhận lãnh từ ban đầu, ấy là chúng ta phải yêu thương nhau. 6Vả, sự yêu thương là tại làm theo các điều răn của Ðức Chúa Trời. Ðó là điều răn mà các ngươi đã nghe từ lúc ban đầu, đặng làm theo. 7Trong thế gian đã rải nhiều kẻ dỗ dành, là kẻ chẳng xưng Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ lấy xác thịt mà đến: ấy đó thật là kẻ dỗ dành và kẻ địch lại Ðấng Christ. 8Chính Các ngươi hãy giữ, hầu cho khỏi mất kết quả của công việc mình, nhưng cho được phần thưởng đầy đủ. 9Hễ ai đi dông dài, chẳng bền lòng theo đạo Ðấng Christ, thì người ấy không có Ðức Chúa Trời. Còn ai bền lòng trong đạo ấy, thì người đó có Ðức Chúa Cha và Ðức Chúa Con. 10Nếu ai đến cùng các ngươi mà không đem đạo ấy theo, thì chớ rước họ vào nhà, và đừng chào hỏi họ. 11Vì người nào chào hỏi họ, tức là dự vào công việc ác của họ. 12Ta còn nhiều điều muốn viết cho các ngươi; ta không muốn viết bằng giấy và mực, nhưng ta ước ao đi thăm các ngươi, và đối mặt nói chuyện cùng nhau, hầu cho sự vui mừng của chúng ta được đầy dẫy. 13Con cái của chị em bà là bà được chọn kia, chào thăm bà.

1The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all those who know the truth; 2for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever: 3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father. 5Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it. 7For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the Antichrist. 8Watch yourselves, that we don’t lose the things which we have accomplished, but that we receive a full reward. 9Whoever transgresses and doesn’t remain in the teaching of Christ, doesn’t have God. He who remains in the teaching, the same has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you, and doesn’t bring this teaching, don’t receive him into your house, and don’t welcome him, 11for he who welcomes him participates in his evil works. 12Having many things to write to you, I don’t want to do so with paper and ink, but I hope to come to you, and to speak face to face, that our joy may be made full. 13The children of your chosen sister greet you. Amen.

1De ouderling aan de uitverkoren vrouwe en aan haar kinderen, die ik in waarheid liefheb, en niet alleen ik, maar ook allen, die de waarheid gekend hebben; 2Om der waarheid wil, die in ons blijft, en met ons zal zijn in der eeuwigheid: 3Genade, barmhartigheid, vrede zij met ulieden van God den Vader, en van den Heere Jezus Christus, den Zoon des Vaders, in waarheid en liefde. 4Ik ben zeer verblijd geweest, dat ik van uw kinderen gevonden heb, die in de waarheid wandelen, gelijk wij een gebod ontvangen hebben van den Vader. 5En nu bid ik u, uitverkoren vrouwe, niet als u schrijvende een nieuw gebod, maar hetgeen wij gehad hebben van den beginne, namelijk dat wij elkander liefhebben. 6En dit is de liefde, dat wij wandelen naar Zijn geboden. Dit is het gebod, gelijk gijlieden van den beginne gehoord hebt, dat gij in hetzelve zoudt wandelen. 7Want er zijn vele verleiders in de wereld gekomen, die niet belijden, dat Jezus Christus in het vlees gekomen is. Deze is de verleider en de antichrist. 8Ziet toe voor uzelven, dat wij niet verliezen, hetgeen wij gearbeid hebben, maar een vol loon mogen ontvangen. 9Een iegelijk, die overtreedt, en niet blijft in de leer van Christus, die heeft God niet; die in de leer van Christus blijft, deze heeft beiden den Vader en den Zoon. 10Indien iemand tot ulieden komt, en deze leer niet brengt, ontvangt hem niet in huis, en zegt tot hem niet: Zijt gegroet. 11Want die tot hem zegt: Zijt gegroet, die heeft gemeenschap aan zijn boze werken. 12Ik heb veel aan ulieden te schrijven, doch ik heb niet gewild door papier en inkt; maar ik hoop tot ulieden te komen, en mond tot mond met u te spreken, opdat onze blijdschap volkomen moge zijn. 13U groeten de kinderen van uw zuster, de uitverkorene. Amen.
