1Hỡi anh em, chính anh em biết rõ rằng chúng tôi đã đến nơi anh em, ấy chẳng phải là vô ích đâu; 2nhưng sau khi bị đau đớn và sỉ nhục tại thành Phi-líp, như anh em đã biết, thì chúng tôi trông cậy Ðức Chúa Trời, cứ rao truyền đạo Tin Lành của Ðức Chúa Trời cách dạn dĩ giữa cơn đại chiến. 3Vì sự giảng đạo của chúng tôi chẳng phải bởi sự sai lầm, hoặc ý không thanh sạch, cũng chẳng dùng điều gian dối. 4Nhưng vì Ðức Chúa Trời đã xét chúng tôi là xứng đáng giao cho việc giảng Tin Lành, nên chúng tôi cứ nói, không phải để đẹp lòng loài người, nhưng để đẹp lòng Ðức Chúa Trời, là Ðấng dò xét lòng chúng tôi. 5Vả, anh em có biết, chúng tôi không hề dùng những lời dua nịnh, cũng không hề bởi lòng tư lợi mà làm, có Ðức Chúa Trời chứng cho. 6Dẫu rằng chúng tôi có thể bắt anh em tôn trọng chúng tôi, vì là sứ đồ của Ðấng Christ, song cũng chẳng cầu vinh hiển đến từ loài người, hoặc từ nơi anh em, hoặc từ nơi kẻ khác. 7Nhưng chúng tôi đã ăn ở nhu mì giữa anh em, như một người vú săn sóc chính con mình cách dịu dàng vậy. 8Vậy, vì lòng rất yêu thương của chúng tôi đối với anh em, nên ước ao ban cho anh em, không những Tin Lành Ðức Chúa Trời thôi đâu, song cả đến chính sự sống chúng tôi nữa, bởi anh em đã trở nên thiết nghĩa với chúng tôi là bao. 9Hỡi anh em, anh em còn nhớ công lao, khó nhọc của chúng tôi; ấy là trong khi chúng tôi giảng Tin Lành cho anh em, lại cũng làm việc cả ngày lẫn đêm, để cho khỏi lụy đến một người nào trong anh em hết. 10Anh em làm chứng, Ðức Chúa Trời cũng làm chứng rằng cách ăn ở của chúng tôi đối với anh em có lòng tin, thật là thánh sạch, công bình, không chỗ trách được. 11Anh em cũng biết rằng chúng tôi đối đãi với mỗi người trong anh em, như cha đối với con, 12khuyên lơn, yên ủi, và nài xin anh em ăn ở một cách xứng đáng với Ðức Chúa Trời, là Ðấng gọi anh em đến nước Ngài và sự vinh hiển Ngài. 13Bởi vậy, chúng tôi tạ ơn Ðức Chúa Trời không thôi về sự anh em tiếp nhận lời của Ðức Chúa Trời mà chúng tôi đã truyền cho, không coi như lời của loài người, bèn coi như lời của Ðức Chúa Trời, vì thật là lời Ðức Chúa Trời, cũng hành động trong anh em có lòng tin. 14Hỡi anh em, anh em thật đã trở nên người bắt chước các hội thánh của Ðức Chúa Trời tại xứ Giu-đê, là các Hội thánh trong Ðức Chúa Jêsus Christ: anh em đã chịu khổ bởi người Giu-đa, 15là người đã giết Ðức Chúa Jêsus và các Ðấng tiên tri, đã bắt bớ chúng tôi; làm trái ý Ðức Chúa Trời và thù nghịch với mọi người nữa, 16ngăn trở chúng tôi giảng dạy dân ngoại cho được cứu, lại hằng đầy dẫy cái lượng tội lỗi mình. Nhưng cơn thịnh nộ của Ðức Chúa Trời sau hết đã đến trên họ. 17Hỡi anh em, về phần chúng tôi, đã xa cách anh em ít lâu nay, thân tuy cách nhưng lòng không cách, chúng tôi đã nôn nả biết bao, tìm phương để thỏa lòng ao ước, lại thấy mặt anh em. 18Vì vậy, đã hai lần, chúng tôi, nhứt là tôi, Phao-lô, muốn đi đến cùng anh em; nhưng quỉ Sa-tan đã ngăn trở chúng tôi. 19Vì sự trông cậy, vui mừng và mão triều thiên vinh hiển của chúng tôi là gì, há chằng phải là anh em cũng được đứng trước mặt Ðức Chúa Jêsus chúng ta trong khi Ngài đến sao? 20Phải, anh em thật là sự vinh hiển và vui mừng của chúng tôi vậy.
1For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn’t in vain, 2but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict. 3For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception. 4But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. 5For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness), 6nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ. 7But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us. 9For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God. 10You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe. 11As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory. 13For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe. 14For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews; 15who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and didn’t please God, and are contrary to all men; 16forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always. But wrath has come on them to the uttermost. 17But we, brothers, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, tried even harder to see your face with great desire, 18because we wanted to come to you—indeed, I, Paul, once and again—but Satan hindered us. 19For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Isn’t it even you, before our Lord Jesus at his coming? 20For you are our glory and our joy.
1Want gij weet zelven, broeders, onzen ingang tot u, dat die niet ijdel is geweest; 2Maar, hoewel wij te voren geleden hadden, en ook ons smaadheid aangedaan was, gelijk gij weet, te Filippi, zo hebben wij nochtans vrijmoedigheid gebruikt in onzen God, om het Evangelie van God tot u te spreken in veel strijds. 3Want onze vermaning is niet geweest uit verleiding, noch uit onreinigheid, noch met bedrog; 4Maar, gelijk wij van God beproefd zijn geweest, dat ons het Evangelie zou toebetrouwd worden, alzo spreken wij, niet als mensen behagende, maar Gode, Die onze harten beproeft. 5Want wij hebben nooit met pluimstrijkende woorden omgegaan, gelijk gij weet, noch met enig bedeksel van gierigheid; God is Getuige! 6Noch zoekende eer uit mensen, noch van u, noch van anderen; hoewel wij u tot last konden zijn als Christus' apostelen; 7Maar wij zijn vriendelijk geweest in het midden van u, gelijk als een voedster haar kinderen koestert; 8Alzo wij, tot u zeer genegen zijnde, hebben u gaarne willen mededelen niet alleen het Evangelie van God, maar ook onze eigen zielen, daarom dat gij ons lief geworden waart. 9Want gij gedenkt, broeders, onzen arbeid en moeite; want nacht en dag werkende, opdat wij niemand onder u zouden lastig zijn, hebben wij het Evangelie van God onder u gepredikt. 10Gij zijt getuigen, en God, hoe heilig, en rechtvaardig, en onberispelijk wij u, die gelooft, geweest zijn. 11Gelijk gij weet, hoe wij een iegelijk van u, als een vader zijn kinderen, vermaanden en vertroostten, 12En betuigden, dat gij zoudt wandelen, waardiglijk Gode, Die u roept tot Zijn Koninkrijk en heerlijkheid. 13Daarom danken wij ook God zonder ophouden, dat, als gij het Woord der prediking van God van ons ontvangen hebt, gij dat aangenomen hebt, niet als der mensen woord, maar (gelijk het waarlijk is) als Gods Woord, dat ook werkt in u, die gelooft. 14Want gij, broeders, zijt navolgers geworden der Gemeenten Gods, die in Judea zijn, in Christus Jezus; dewijl ook gij hetzelfde geleden hebt van uw eigen medeburgers, gelijk als zij van de Joden; 15Welke ook gedood hebben den Heere Jezus, en hun eigen profeten; en ons hebben vervolgd, en Gode niet behagen, en alle mensen tegen zijn; 16En verhinderen ons te spreken tot de heidenen, dat zij zalig mochten worden; opdat zij te allen tijd hun zonden vervullen zouden. En de toorn is over hen gekomen tot het einde. 17Maar wij, broeders, van u beroofd geweest zijnde voor een kleine wijle tijds, naar het aangezicht, niet naar het hart, hebben ons te overvloediger benaarstigd, om uw aangezicht te zien, met grote begeerte. 18Daarom hebben wij tot u willen komen (immers ik Paulus) eenmaal en andermaal, maar de satanas heeft ons belet. 19Want welke is onze hoop, of blijdschap, of kroon des roems? Zijt gij die ook niet voor onzen Heere Jezus Christus in Zijn toekomst? 20Want gij zijt onze heerlijkheid en blijdschap.
