1Як уплило з місяць, наступив Аммонїй Наас та й облїг Явис у Галаадї. І послали всї городяне Явиські сказати Наасові: Учини вмову з нами, дак піддамось тобі. 2Аммонїй же Наас відказав їм: Я вчиню з вами вмову, але таку, щоб виколов я кожному з вас праве око і тим зробив сьміховище з усього Ізраїля. 3І відказали йому громадські мужі Явиські: Дай нам сїм день реченця, а ми пошлемо посли по всьому займищу Ізрайлевому, і коли нїхто не озветься помогти нам, так піддамось тобі. 4Як же прийшли посли в Гиву Саулову і переказали слова отті в слух народа, заплакав увесь люд у голос. 5Саул же йшов саме з поля позад волів додому, і питає: Що сталось людові, чого він плаче? І зʼясували йому слова городян Явиських. 6Як же почув сї слова, найшов на Саула дух Божий, і запалав він страшним гнївом. 7І вхопив Саул оба воли, порозрубував на шматки, та й порозсилав через посли по всьому займищу Ізрайлевому навкруги з покликом: Хто не вирушить із Саулом та з Самуїлом, того волам зробить він те саме. І обняв людей страх Господень, і вирушили вони, як один чоловік. 8І як він переглядав їх у Безецї, було синів Ізрайлевих триста тисячей, а трийцять тисячей мужів Юдиних. 9І сказав тодї послам, що прийшли: Сповістїте городян Явиса Галаадського: Завтра буде вам підмога, як обогріє сонце. І прийшли посли, і сповістили про се городян Явиських, і вони зрадїли. 10І сказали городяне Явиські Насові: Завтра ми вийдемо до вас, тодї чинити мете з нами, що вам угодно. 11Назавтра ж подїлив Саул людей на три части, і вламались вони в час ранньої сторожі в табір, та побивали Амоніїв, аж день огрівся. Що ж із них зісталось, те розсипалось так, що й двох їх не було вкупі. 12І промовив люд до Самуїла: Хто се питав: Чи Саулові ж та царювати над нами? Давай їх сюди, ми повбиваємо їх! 13Саул же відказав: У сей день не можна нїкого вбивати, бо сьогоднї Господь подав поміч Ізраїлеві. 14І сказав Самуїл народові: Ходїмо в Галгал, та поновімо там царство. 15І двинув увесь люд у Галгал, і поставив там Саула перед Господом царем. І принесли там мирні жертви перед Господом. І веселились там, Саул і всї Ізрайлитяне велико.
1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh Gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.” 2Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach on all Israel.” 3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.” 4Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh. 6The Spirit of God came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly. 7He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man. 8He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9They said to the messengers who came, “Thus you shall tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.’” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. 10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.” 11On the next day, Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. 12The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!” 13Saul said, “There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has worked deliverance in Israel.” 14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.” 15All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Toen hief al het volk zijn stem op, en weende. 5En ziet, Saul kwam achter de runderen uit het veld, en Saul zeide: Wat is den volke, dat zij wenen? Toen vertelden zij hem de woorden der mannen van Jabes. 6Toen werd de Geest Gods vaardig over Saul, als hij deze woorden hoorde; en zijn toorn ontstak zeer. 7En hij nam een paar runderen, en hieuw ze in stukken, en hij zond ze in alle landpalen van Israel door de hand der boden, zeggende: Die niet zelf uittrekt achter Saul en achter Samuel, alzo zal men zijn runderen doen. Toen viel de vreze des HEEREN op het volk, en zij gingen uit als een enig man. 8En hij telde hen te Bezek; en van de kinderen Israels waren driehonderd duizend, en van de mannen van Juda dertig duizend. 9Toen zeiden zij tot de boden, die gekomen waren: Aldus zult gijlieden den mannen te Jabes in Gilead zeggen: Morgen zal u verlossing geschieden, als de zon heet worden zal. Als de boden kwamen, en verkondigden dat aan de mannen te Jabes, zo werden zij verblijd. 10En de mannen van Jabes zeiden: Morgen zullen wij tot ulieden uitgaan, en gij zult ons doen naar alles, wat goed is in uw ogen. 11Het geschiedde nu des anderen daags, dat Saul het volk stelde in drie hopen, en zij kwamen in het midden des legers, in de morgenwake, en zij sloegen Ammon, totdat de dag heet werd; en het geschiedde, dat de overigen alzo verstrooid werden, dat er onder hen geen twee te zamen bleven. 12Toen zeide het volk tot Samuel: Wie is hij, die zeide: Zou Saul over ons regeren? Geeft hier die mannen, dat wij hen doden. 13Maar Saul zeide: Er zal te dezen dage geen man gedood worden, want de HEERE heeft heden een verlossing in Israel gedaan. 14Verder zeide Samuel tot het volk: Komt en laat ons naar Gilgal gaan, en het koninkrijk aldaar vernieuwen. 15Toen ging al het volk naar Gilgal, en maakte Saul aldaar koning voor het aangezicht des HEEREN te Gilgal; en zij offerden aldaar dankofferen voor het aangezicht des HEEREN; en Saul verheugde zich aldaar gans zeer, met al de mannen van Israel.
