1Depois disto aconteceu, que morreu o rei dos filhos de Amom: e reinou em lugar seu Hanum seu filho. 2E disse Davi: Eu farei misericórdia com Hanum filho de Naás, como seu pai a fez comigo. E enviou Davi seus servos a consolá-lo por seu pai. Mas chegados os servos de Davi à terra dos filhos de Amom, 3Os príncipes dos filhos de Amom disseram a Hanum seu senhor: Parece-te que para Davi honrar a teu pai te enviou consoladores? Não enviou Davi seus servos a ti por reconhecer e inspecionar a cidade, para destruí-la? 4Então Hanum tomou os servos de Davi, e rapou-lhes a metade da barba, e cortou-lhes as roupas pela metade até as nádegas, e despachou-os. 5O qual quando foi feito saber a Davi, enviou a encontrar-lhes, porque eles estavam em extremo envergonhados; e o rei fez dizer lhes: Ficai-vos em Jericó até que vos volte a nascer a barba, e então regressareis. 6E vendo os filhos de Amom que se fizeram odiosos a Davi, enviaram os filhos de Amom e alugaram aos sírios da casa de Reobe, e aos sírios de Zobá, vinte mil homens a pé: e do rei de Maaca mil homens, e de Tobe doze mil homens. 7O qual quando ouviu Davi, enviou a Joabe com todo o exército dos valentes. 8E saindo os filhos de Amom, ordenaram seus esquadrões à entrada da porta: mas os sírios de Zobá, e de Reobe, e de Tobe, e de Maaca, estavam à parte no campo. 9Vendo, pois, Joabe que havia esquadrões diante e detrás dele, escolheu de todos os escolhidos de Israel, e pôs-se em ordem contra os sírios. 10Entregou logo o que restou do povo em mão de Abisai seu irmão, e o pôs em ordem para encontrar aos amonitas. 11E disse: Se os sírios me forem superiores, tu me ajudarás; e se os filhos de Amom puderem mais que tu, eu te darei ajuda. 12Esforça-te, e esforcemo-nos por nosso povo, e pelas cidades de nosso Deus: e faça o SENHOR o que bem lhe parecer. 13E aproximou-se Joabe, e o povo que com ele estava, para lutar com os sírios; mas eles fugiram diante dele. 14Então os filhos de Amom, vendo que os sírios haviam fugido, fugiram também eles diante de Abisai, e entraram-se na cidade. E voltou Joabe dos filhos de Amom, e veio a Jerusalém. 15Mas vendo os sírios que haviam caído diante de Israel, voltaram a se juntar. 16E enviou Hadadezer, e tirou os sírios que estavam da outra parte do rio, os quais vieram a Helã, levando por chefe a Sobaque general do exército de Hadadezer. 17E quando foi dado aviso a Davi, juntou a todo Israel, e passando o Jordão veio a Helã: e os sírios se puseram em ordem contra Davi, e lutaram com ele. 18Mas os sírios fugiram diante de Israel: e feriu Davi dos sírios a gente de setecentos carros, e quarenta mil cavaleiros: feriu também a Sobaque general do exército, e morreu ali. 19Vendo, pois todos os reis que assistiam a Hadadezer, como haviam eles sido derrotados diante de Israel, fizeram paz com Israel, e serviram-no; e dali adiante temeram os sírios de socorrer aos filhos de Amom.
1After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. 3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” 4So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5When they told it to David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.” 6When the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men. 7When David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men. 8The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. 9Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians: 10The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon. 11He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and Yahweh do that which seems good to him.” 13So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him. 14When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem. 15When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16Hadadezer sent, and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17It was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrians seven hundred charioteers, and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there. 19When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Heeft David zijn knechten niet daarom tot u gezonden, dat hij deze stad doorzoeke, en die verspiede, en die omkere? 4Toen nam Hanun Davids knechten, en schoor hun baard half af, en sneed hun klederen half af, tot aan hun billen; en hij liet hen gaan. 5Als zij dit David lieten weten, zo zond hij hun tegemoet; want deze mannen waren zeer beschaamd. En de koning zeide: Blijft te Jericho, totdat uw baard weder gewassen zal zijn, komt dan weder. 6Toen nu de kinderen Ammons zagen, dat zij zich bij David stinkende gemaakt hadden, zonden de kinderen Ammons heen, en huurden van de Syriers van Beth-Rechob, en van de Syriers van Zoba, twintig duizend voetvolks, en van den koning van Maacha duizend man, en van de mannen van Tob twaalf duizend man. 7Als David dit hoorde, zond hij Joab heen, en het ganse heir met de helden. 8En de kinderen Ammons togen uit, en stelden de slagorde voor de deur der poort; maar de Syriers van Zoba, en Rechob, en de mannen van Tob en Maacha waren bijzonder in het veld. 9Als nu Joab zag, dat de spits der slagorde tegen hem was, van voren en van achteren, zo verkoos hij uit alle uitgelezenen van Israel, en stelde hen in orde tegen de Syriers aan; 10En het overige des volks gaf hij onder de hand van zijn broeder Abisai, die het in orde stelde tegen de kinderen Ammons aan. 11En hij zeide: Zo de Syriers mij te sterk zullen zijn, zo zult gij mij komen verlossen; en zo de kinderen Ammons u te sterk zullen zijn, zo zal ik komen om u te verlossen. 12Wees sterk, en laat ons sterk zijn voor ons volk, en voor de steden onzes Gods; de HEERE nu doe, wat goed is in Zijn ogen. 13Toen naderde Joab, en het volk, dat bij hem was, tot den strijd tegen de Syriers; en zij vloden voor zijn aangezicht. 14Als de kinderen Ammons zagen, dat de Syriers vloden, vloden zij ook voor het aangezicht van Abisai, en kwamen in de stad. En Joab keerde weder van de kinderen Ammons, en kwam te Jeruzalem. 15Toen nu de Syriers zagen, dat zij voor Israels aangezicht geslagen waren, zo vergaderden zij zich weder te zamen. 16En Hadad-ezer zond heen, en deed de Syriers uitkomen, die op gene zijde der rivier zijn, en zij kwamen te Helam; en Sobach, Hadad-ezers krijgsoverste, toog voor hun aangezicht heen. 17Als dat David werd aangezegd, verzamelde hij gans Israel, en toog over de Jordaan, en kwam te Helam, en de Syriers stelden de slagorde tegen David aan, en streden met hem. 18Maar de Syriers vloden voor Israels aangezicht, en David versloeg van de Syriers zevenhonderd wagenen, en veertig duizend ruiteren; daartoe sloeg hij Sobach, hun krijgsoverste, dat hij aldaar stierf. 19Toen nu al de koningen, die Hadad-ezers knechten waren, zagen, dat zij voor Israels aangezicht geslagen waren, maakten zij vrede met Israel, en dienden hen; en de Syriers vreesden de kinderen Ammons meer te verlossen.
