1유다 왕 여호야김이 위에 있은 지 삼년에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에 이르러 그것을 에워쌌더니 2주께서 유다 왕 여호야김과 하나님의 전 기구 얼마를 그의 손에 붙이시매 그가 그것을 가지고 시날 땅 자기 신의 묘에 이르러 그 신의 보고에 두었더라 3왕이 환관장 아스부나스에게 명하여 이스라엘 자손 중에서 왕족과 귀족의 몇 사람 4곧 흠이 없고 아름다우며 모든 재주를 통달하며 지식이 구비하며 학문에 익숙하여 왕궁에 모실 만한 소년을 데려오게 하였고 그들에게 갈대아 사람의 학문과 방언을 가르치게 하였고 5또 왕이 지정하여 자기의 진미와 자기의 마시는 포도주에서 그들의 날마다 쓸 것을 주어 삼 년을 기르게 하였으니 이는 그 후에 그들로 왕의 앞에 모셔 서게 하려 함이었더라 6그들 중에 유다 자손 곧 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴가 있었더니 7환관장이 그들의 이름을 고쳐 다니엘은 벨드사살이라 하고 하나냐는 사드락이라 하고 미사엘은 메삭이라 하고 아사랴는 아벳느고라 하였더라 8다니엘은 뜻을 정하여 왕의 진미와 그의 마시는 포도주로 자기를 더럽히지 아니하리라 하고 자기를 더럽히지 않게 하기를 환관장에게 구하니 9하나님이 다니엘로 환관장에게 은혜와 긍휼을 얻게 하신지라 10환관장이 다니엘에게 이르되 내가 내 주 왕을 두려워하노라 그가 너희 먹을 것과 너희 마실 것을 지정하셨거늘 너희의 얼굴이 초췌하여 동무 소년들만 못한 것을 그로 보시게 할 것이 무엇이냐 그렇게 되면 너희 까닭에 내 머리가 왕 앞에서 위태하게 되리라 하니라 11환관장이 세워 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴를 감독하게 한 자에게 다니엘이 말하되 12청하오니 당신의 종들을 열흘 동안 시험하여 채식을 주어 먹게 하고 물을 주어 마시게 한 후에 13당신 앞에서 우리의 얼굴과 왕의 진미를 먹는 소년들의 얼굴을 비교하여 보아서 보이는 대로 종들에게 처분하소서 하매 14그가 그들의 말을 좇아 열흘을 시험하더니 15열흘 후에 그들의 얼굴이 더욱 아름답고 살이 더욱 윤택하여 왕의 진미를 먹는 모든 소년보다 나아 보인지라 16이러므로 감독하는 자가 그들에게 분정된 진미와 마실 포도주를 제하고 채식을 주니라 17하나님이 이 네 소년에게 지식을 얻게 하시며 모든 학문과 재주에 명철하게 하신 외에 다니엘은 또 모든 이상과 몽조를 깨달아 알더라 18왕의 명한바 그들을 불러들일 기한이 찼으므로 환관장이 그들을 데리고 느부갓네살 앞으로 들어갔더니 19왕이 그들과 말하여 보매 무리 중에 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴와 같은 자 없으므로 그들로 왕 앞에 모시게 하고 20왕이 그들에게 모든 일을 묻는 중에 그 지혜와 총명이 온 나라 박수와 술객보다 십 배나 나은 줄을 아니라 21다니엘은 고레스 왕 원년까지 있으니라
1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. 3The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles; 4youths in whom was no defect, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans. 5The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king. 6Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 7The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, Shadrach; and to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. 8But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 9Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs. 10The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king. 11Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 12Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink. 13Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants. 14So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. 15At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties. 16So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse. 17Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. 20In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm. 21Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.
1In het derde jaar des koninkrijks van Jojakim, den koning van Juda, kwam Nebukadnezar, de koning van Babel, te Jeruzalem, en belegerde haar. 2En de HEERE gaf Jojakim, den koning van Juda, in zijn hand, en een deel der vaten van het huis Gods; en hij bracht ze in het land van Sinear, in het huis zijns gods; en de vaten bracht hij in het schathuis zijns gods. 3En de koning zeide tot Aspenaz, den overste zijner kamerlingen, dat hij voorbrengen zou enigen uit de kinderen Israels, te weten, uit het koninklijk zaad, en uit de prinsen; 4Jongelingen, aan dewelke geen gebrek ware, maar schoon van aangezicht, en vernuftig in alle wijsheid, en ervaren in wetenschap, en kloek van verstand, en in dewelke bekwaamheid ware, om te staan in des konings paleis; en dat men hen onderwees in de boeken en spraak der Chaldeen. 5En de koning verordende hun, wat men ze dag bij dag geven zou van de stukken der spijs des konings, en van den wijn zijns dranks, en dat men hen drie jaren alzo optoog, en dat zij ten einde derzelve zouden staan voor het aangezicht des konings. 6Onder dezelve nu waren uit de kinderen van Juda: Daniel, Hananja, Misael en Azarja. 7En de overste der kamerlingen gaf hun andere namen, en Daniel noemde hij Beltsazar, en Hananja Sadrach, en Misael Mesach, en Azarja Abed-nego. 8Daniel nu nam voor in zijn hart, dat hij zich niet zou ontreinigen met de stukken van de spijs des konings, noch met den wijn zijns dranks; daarom verzocht hij van den overste der kamerlingen, dat hij zich niet mocht ontreinigen. 9En God gaf Daniel genade en barmhartigheid voor het aangezicht van den overste der kamerlingen. 10Want de overste der kamerlingen zeide tot Daniel: Ik vreze mijn heer, den koning, die ulieder spijs, en ulieder drank verordend heeft; want waarom zou hij ulieder aangezichten droeviger zien, dan der jongelingen, die in gelijkheid met ulieden zijn? Alzo zoudt gij mijn hoofd bij den koning schuldig maken. 11Toen zeide Daniel tot Melzar, dien de overste der kamerlingen gesteld had over Daniel, Hananja, Misael en Azarja: 12Beproef toch uw knechten tien dagen lang, en men geve ons van het gezaaide te eten, en water te drinken. 13En men zie voor uw aangezicht onze gedaanten, en de gedaante der jongelingen, die de stukken van de spijs des konings eten; en doe met uw knechten, naar dat gij zien zult. 14Toen hoorde hij hen in deze zaak, en hij beproefde ze tien dagen. 15Ten einde nu der tien dagen, zag men dat hun gedaanten schoner waren, en zij vetter waren van vlees dan al de jongelingen, die de stukken van de spijze des konings aten. 16Toen geschiedde het, dat Melzar de stukken hunner spijs wegnam, mitsgaders den wijn huns dranks, en hij gaf hun van het gezaaide. 17Aan deze vier jongelingen nu gaf God wetenschap en verstand in alle boeken, en wijsheid; maar Daniel gaf Hij verstand in allerlei gezichten en dromen. 18Ten einde nu der dagen, waarvan de koning gezegd had, dat men hen zou inbrengen, zo bracht ze de overste der kamerlingen in voor het aangezicht van Nebukadnezar, 19En de koning sprak met hen; doch er werd uit hen allen niemand gevonden, gelijk Daniel, Hananja, Misael en Azarja; en zij stonden voor het aangezicht des konings. 20En in alle zaken van verstandige wijsheid, die de koning hun afvroeg, zo vond hij hen tienmaal boven al de tovernaars en sterrekijkers, die in zijn ganse koninkrijk waren. 21En Daniel bleef tot het eerste jaar van den koning Kores toe.
