What is certain, what is tradition and what is a reconstruction.
Getekend, niet gemeten
Deze kaart is met de hand getekend: kustlijnen en rivieren zijn vereenvoudigd. De kust lag vroeger soms ook anders. De Nijldelta en de monding van Eufraat en Tigris zijn sinds de Bijbelse tijd flink verschoven.
Traditionele plaatsen
Van veel plaatsen weten we precies waar ze lagen: Jeruzalem, Jericho, Efeze. Van andere niet. De berg Sinaï, Kana, Emmaüs en de doopplaats aan de Jordaan zijn traditionele of waarschijnlijke plaatsen; bij elke plaats staat het erbij.
Routes zijn reconstructies
Handelingen noemt de steden van Paulus' reizen vrij nauwkeurig, de weg ertussen niet altijd. De route van de uittocht is onzeker, en de evangeliën geven geen volledige reisroute van Jezus. De lijnen tonen de grote lijn, geen exact pad.
Jaartallen bij benadering
Voor de aartsvaders en de uittocht lopen de voorstellen eeuwen uiteen. Voor Jezus en Paulus gaat het meestal om een paar jaar verschil.
