1O ignorate voi, fratelli (poiché io parlo a persone che hanno conoscenza della legge), che la legge signoreggia l’uomo per tutto il tempo ch’egli vive? 2Infatti la donna maritata è per la legge legata al marito mentre egli vive; ma se il marito muore, ella è sciolta dalla legge che la lega al marito. 3Ond’è che se mentre vive il marito ella passa ad un altro uomo, sarà chiamata adultera; ma se il marito muore, ella è libera di fronte a quella legge; in guisa che non è adultera se divien moglie d’un altro uomo. 4Così, fratelli miei, anche voi siete divenuti morti alla legge mediante il corpo di Cristo, per appartenere ad un altro, cioè a colui che è risuscitato dai morti, e questo affinché portiamo del frutto a Dio. 5Poiché, mentre eravamo nella carne, le passioni peccaminose, destate dalla legge, agivano nelle nostre membra per portar del frutto per la morte; 6ma ora siamo stati sciolti dai legami della legge, essendo morti a quella che ci teneva soggetti, talché serviamo in novità di spirito, e non in vecchiezza di lettera. 7Che diremo dunque? La legge è essa peccato? Così non sia; anzi io non avrei conosciuto il peccato, se non per mezzo della legge; poiché io non avrei conosciuto la concupiscenza, se la legge non avesse detto: Non concupire. 8Ma il peccato, còlta l’occasione, per mezzo del comandamento, produsse in me ogni concupiscenza; perché senza la legge il peccato è morto. 9E ci fu un tempo, nel quale, senza legge, vivevo; ma, venuto il comandamento, il peccato prese vita, e io morii; 10e il comandamento ch’era inteso a darmi vita, risultò che mi dava morte. 11Perché il peccato, còlta l’occasione, per mezzo del comandamento, mi trasse in inganno; e, per mezzo d’esso, m’uccise. 12Talché la legge è santa, e il comandamento è santo e giusto e buono. 13Ciò che è buono diventò dunque morte per me? Così non sia; ma è il peccato che m’è divenuto morte, onde si palesasse come peccato, cagionandomi la morte mediante ciò che è buono; affinché, per mezzo del comandamento, il peccato diventasse estremamente peccante. 14Noi sappiamo infatti che la legge è spirituale; ma io son carnale, venduto schiavo al peccato. 15Perché io non approvo quello che faccio; poiché non faccio quel che voglio, ma faccio quello che odio. 16Ora, se faccio quello che non voglio, io ammetto che la legge è buona; 17e allora non son più io che lo faccio, ma è il peccato che abita in me. 18Difatti, io so che in me, vale a dire nella mia carne, non abita alcun bene; poiché ben trovasi in me il volere, ma il modo di compiere il bene, no. 19Perché il bene che voglio, non lo fo; ma il male che non voglio, quello fo. 20Ora, se ciò che non voglio è quello che fo, non son più io che lo compio, ma è il peccato che abita in me. 21Io mi trovo dunque sotto questa legge: che volendo io fare il bene, il male si trova in me. 22Poiché io mi diletto nella legge di Dio, secondo l’uomo interno; 23ma veggo un’altra legge nelle mie membra, che combatte contro la legge della mia mente, e mi rende prigione della legge del peccato che è nelle mie membra. 24Misero me uomo! chi mi trarrà da questo corpo di morte? 25Grazie siano rese a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, nostro Signore. Così dunque, io stesso con la mente servo alla legge di Dio, ma con la carne alla legge del peccato.
1Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives? 2For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband. 3So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man. 4Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God. 5For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law, worked in our members to bring out fruit to death. 6But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter. 7What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting, unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” 8But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead. 9I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10The commandment, which was for life, this I found to be for death; 11for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. 12Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good. 13Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful. 14For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin. 15For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. 16But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good. 17So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. 18For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good. 19For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice. 20But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. 21I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present. 22For I delight in God’s law after the inward man, 23but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. 24What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? 25I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, the sin’s law.
1Weet gij niet, broeders! (want ik spreek tot degenen, die de wet verstaan) dat de wet heerst over den mens, zo langen tijd als hij leeft? 2Want een vrouw, die onder den man staat, is aan den levenden man verbonden door de wet; maar indien de man gestorven is, zo is zij vrijgemaakt van de wet des mans. 3Daarom dan, indien zij eens anderen mans wordt, terwijl de man leeft, zo zal zij een overspeelster genaamd worden; maar indien de man gestorven is, zo is zij vrij van de wet, alzo dat zij geen overspeelster is, als zij eens anderen mans wordt. 4Zo dan, mijn broeders, gij zijt ook der wet gedood door het lichaam van Christus, opdat gij zoudt worden eens Anderen, namelijk Desgenen, Die van de doden opgewekt is, opdat wij Gode vruchten dragen zouden. 5Want toen wij in het vlees waren, wrochten de bewegingen der zonden, die door de wet zijn, in onze leden, om den dood vruchten te dragen. 6Maar nu zijn wij vrijgemaakt van de wet, overmits wij dien gestorven zijn, onder welken wij gehouden waren; alzo dat wij dienen in nieuwigheid des geestes, en niet in de oudheid der letter. 7Wat zullen wij dan zeggen? Is de wet zonde? Dat zij verre. Ja, ik kende de zonde niet dan door de wet; want ook had ik de begeerlijkheid niet geweten zonde te zijn, indien de wet niet zeide: Gij zult niet begeren. 8Maar de zonde, oorzaak genomen hebbende door het gebod, heeft in mij alle begeerlijkheid gewrocht; want zonder de wet is de zonde dood. 9En zonder de wet, zo leefde ik eertijds; maar als het gebod gekomen is, zo is de zonde weder levend geworden, doch ik ben gestorven. 10En het gebod, dat ten leven was, hetzelve is mij ten dood bevonden. 11Want de zonde, oorzaak genomen hebbende door het gebod, heeft mij verleid, en door hetzelve gedood. 12Alzo is dan de wet heilig, en het gebod is heilig, en rechtvaardig, en goed. 13Is dan het goede mij de dood geworden? Dat zij verre. Maar de zonde is mij de dood geworden; opdat zij zou openbaar worden zonde te zijn; werkende mij door het goede den dood; opdat de zonde boven mate werd zondigende door het gebod. 14Want wij weten, dat de wet geestelijk is, maar ik ben vleselijk, verkocht onder de zonde. 15Want hetgeen ik doe, dat ken ik niet; want hetgeen ik wil, dat doe ik niet, maar hetgeen ik haat, dat doe ik. 16En indien ik hetgene doe, dat ik niet wil, zo stem ik de wet toe, dat zij goed is. 17Ik dan doe datzelve nu niet meer, maar de zonde, die in mij woont. 18Want ik weet, dat in mij, dat is, in mijn vlees, geen goed woont; want het willen is wel bij mij, maar het goede te doen, dat vind ik niet. 19Want het goede dat ik wil, doe ik niet, maar het kwade, dat ik niet wil, dat doe ik. 20Indien ik hetgene doe, dat ik niet wil, zo doe ik nu hetzelve niet meer, maar de zonde, die in mij woont. 21Zo vind ik dan deze wet in mij: als ik het goede wil doen, dat het kwade mij bijligt. 22Want ik heb een vermaak in de wet Gods, naar den inwendigen mens; 23Maar ik zie een andere wet in mijn leden, welke strijdt tegen de wet mijns gemoeds, en mij gevangen neemt onder de wet der zonde, die in mijn leden is. 24Ik ellendig mens, wie zal mij verlossen uit het lichaam dezes doods? 25Ik dank God, door Jezus Christus, onzen Heere. Zo dan, ik zelf dien wel met het gemoed de wet Gods, maar met het vlees de wet der zonde.
