1Tu dunque, figliuol mio, fortìficati nella grazia che è in Cristo Gesù, 2e le cose che hai udite da me in presenza di molti testimoni, affidale ad uomini fedeli, i quali siano capaci d’insegnarle anche ad altri. 3Sopporta anche tu le sofferenze, come un buon soldato di Cristo Gesù. 4Uno che va alla guerra non s’impaccia delle faccende della vita; e ciò, affin di piacere a colui che l’ha arruolato. 5Parimente se uno lotta come atleta non è coronato, se non ha lottato secondo le leggi. 6Il lavoratore che fatica dev’essere il primo ad aver la sua parte de’ frutti. 7Considera quello che dico, poiché il Signore ti darà intelligenza in ogni cosa. 8Ricordati di Gesù Cristo, risorto d’infra i morti, progenie di Davide, secondo il mio Vangelo; 9per il quale io soffro afflizione fino ad essere incatenato come un malfattore, ma la parola di Dio non è incatenata. 10Perciò io sopporto ogni cosa per amor degli eletti, affinché anch’essi conseguano la salvezza che è in Cristo Gesù con gloria eterna. 11Certa è questa parola: che se muoiamo con lui, con lui anche vivremo; 12se abbiam costanza nella prova, con lui altresì regneremo; 13se lo rinnegheremo, anch’egli ci rinnegherà; se siamo infedeli, egli rimane fedele, perché non può rinnegare se stesso. 14Ricorda loro queste cose, scongiurandoli nel cospetto di Dio che non faccian dispute di parole, che a nulla giovano e sovvertono chi le ascolta. 15Studiati di presentar te stesso approvato dinanzi a Dio: operaio che non abbia ad esser confuso, che tagli rettamente la parola della verità. 16Ma schiva le profane ciance, perché quelli che vi si danno progrediranno nella empietà 17e la loro parola andrà rodendo come fa la cancrena; fra i quali sono Imeneo e Fileto; 18uomini che si sono sviati dalla verità, dicendo che la resurrezione è già avvenuta, e sovvertono la fede di alcuni. 19Ma pure il solido fondamento di Dio rimane fermo, portando questo sigillo: "Il Signore conosce quelli che son suoi", e: "Ritraggasi dall’iniquità chiunque nomina il nome del Signore". 20Or in una gran casa non ci son soltanto dei vasi d’oro e d’argento, ma anche dei vasi di legno e di terra; e gli uni son destinati a un uso nobile e gli altri ad un uso ignobile. 21Se dunque uno si serba puro da quelle cose, sarà un vaso nobile, santificato, atto al servigio del padrone, preparato per ogni opera buona. 22Ma fuggi gli appetiti giovanili e procaccia giustizia, fede, amore, pace con quelli che di cuor puro invocano il Signore. 23Ma schiva le questioni stolte e scempie, sapendo che generano contese. 24Or il servitore del Signore non deve contendere, ma dev’essere mite inverso tutti, atto ad insegnare, paziente, 25correggendo con dolcezza quelli che contradicono, se mai avvenga che Dio conceda loro di ravvedersi per riconoscere la verità; 26in guisa che, tornati in sé, escano dal laccio del diavolo, che li avea presi prigionieri perché facessero la sua volontà.
1You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. 3You therefore must endure hardship, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier. 5Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn’t crowned unless he has competed by the rules. 6The farmers who labor must be the first to get a share of the crops. 7Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. 8Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my Good News, 9in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained. 10Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11This saying is faithful: “For if we died with him, we will also live with him. 12If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us. 13If we are faithless, he remains faithful. He can’t deny himself.” 14Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they don’t argue about words, to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear. 15Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth. 16But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness, 17and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some. 19However God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.” 20Now in a large house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay. Some are for honor, and some for dishonor. 21If anyone therefore purges himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, and suitable for the master’s use, prepared for every good work. 22Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23But refuse foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife. 24The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle towards all, able to teach, patient, 25in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth, 26and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to his will.
1Gij dan, mijn zoon, word gesterkt in de genade, die in Christus Jezus is; 2En hetgeen gij van mij gehoord hebt onder vele getuigen, betrouw dat aan getrouwe mensen, welke bekwaam zullen zijn om ook anderen te leren. 3Gij dan, lijd verdrukkingen, als een goed krijgsknecht van Jezus Christus. 4Niemand, die in de krijg dient, wordt ingewikkeld in de handelingen des leeftochts, opdat hij dien moge behagen, die hem tot den krijg aangenomen heeft. 5En indien ook iemand strijdt, die wordt niet gekroond, zo hij niet wettelijk heeft gestreden. 6De landman, als hij arbeidt, moet alzo eerst de vruchten genieten. 7Merk, hetgeen ik zeg; doch de Heere geve u verstand in alle dingen. 8Houd in gedachtenis, dat Jezus Christus uit de doden is opgewekt, Welke is uit den zade Davids, naar mijn Evangelie; 9Om hetwelk ik verdrukkingen lijde tot de banden toe, als een kwaaddoener; maar het Woord Gods is niet gebonden. 10Daarom verdraag ik alles om de uitverkorenen, opdat ook zij de zaligheid zouden verkrijgen, die in Christus Jezus is, met eeuwige heerlijkheid. 11Dit is een getrouw woord; want indien wij met Hem gestorven zijn, zo zullen wij ook met Hem leven; 12Indien wij verdragen, wij zullen ook met Hem heersen; indien wij Hem verloochenen, Hij zal ons ook verloochenen; 13Indien wij ontrouw zijn, Hij blijft getrouw; Hij kan Zichzelven niet verloochenen. 14Breng deze dingen in gedachtenis, en betuig voor den Heere, dat zij geen woordenstrijd voeren, hetwelk tot geen ding nut is, dan tot verkering der toehoorders. 15Benaarstig u, om uzelven Gode beproefd voor te stellen, een arbeider, die niet beschaamd wordt, die het Woord der waarheid recht snijdt. 16Maar stel u tegen het ongoddelijk ijdelroepen; want zij zullen in meerdere goddeloosheid toenemen. 17En hun woord zal voorteten, gelijk de kanker; onder welke is Hymeneus en Filetus; 18Die van de waarheid zijn afgeweken, zeggende, dat de opstanding alrede geschied is, en verkeren sommiger geloof. 19Evenwel het vaste fondament Gods staat, hebbende dit zegel: De Heere kent degenen, die de Zijnen zijn; en: Een iegelijk, die den Naam van Christus noemt, sta af van ongerechtigheid. 20Doch in een groot huis zijn niet alleen gouden en zilveren vaten, maar ook houten en aarden vaten; en sommige ter ere, maar sommige ter onere. 21Indien dan iemand zichzelven van deze reinigt, die zal een vat zijn ter ere, geheiligd en bekwaam tot gebruik des Heeren, tot alle goed werk toebereid. 22Maar vlied de begeerlijkheden der jonkheid; en jaag naar rechtvaardigheid, geloof, liefde, vrede, met degenen, die den Heere aanroepen uit een rein hart. 23En verwerp de vragen, die dwaas en zonder lering zijn, wetende, dat zij twistingen voortbrengen. 24En een dienstknecht des Heeren moet niet twisten, maar vriendelijk zijn jegens allen, bekwaam om te leren, en die de kwaden kan verdragen; 25Met zachtmoedigheid onderwijzende degenen, die tegenstaan; of hun God te eniger tijd bekering gave tot erkentenis der waarheid; 26En zij wederom ontwaken mochten uit den strik des duivels, onder welken zij gevangen waren tot zijn wil.
