1Amazia berusia 25 tahun saat dia menjadi raja. Dia memerintah di Yerusalem selama 29 tahun. Nama ibunya adalah Yoadan, dari Yerusalem. 2Dia melakukan apa yang benar di mata TUHAN, tetapi tidak sepenuh hati. 3Sesudah kerajaan itu menjadi kukuh di tangannya, dia membunuh pegawai-pegawainya yang telah membunuh raja, yaitu ayahnya. 4Namun, dia tidak membunuh anak-anak mereka, melainkan bertindak sesuai dengan apa yang tertulis dalam Taurat, yaitu kitab Musa, tempat TUHAN memberi perintah yang berbunyi, “Ayah tidak boleh dihukum mati karena anaknya, dan anak tidak boleh dihukum mati karena ayahnya. Setiap orang harus mati karena dosanya sendiri.” 5Amazia mengumpulkan orang Yehuda dan menyuruh mereka berdiri menurut kaum keluarga mereka di bawah pemimpin pasukan seribu dan pemimpin pasukan seratus. Dari seluruh Yehuda dan Benyamin, dia menghitung mereka yang berumur dua puluh tahun ke atas dan mendapati 300.000 orang pilihan yang siap berperang dan mampu menggunakan tombak dan perisai. 6Dia juga menyewa 100.000 pahlawan yang gagah perkasa dari Israel dengan upah seratus talenta perak. 7Namun, seorang abdi Allah datang menghadapnya dan berkata, “Ya Raja, jangan biarkan tentara Israel pergi bersamamu, sebab TUHAN tidak menyertai Israel, yaitu semua keturunan Efraim itu. 8Namun, jika engkau tetap pergi, lakukanlah. Kuatkanlah dirimu dalam peperangan; Allah akan membuat engkau jatuh di depan musuhmu sebab Allah memiliki kuasa untuk menolong dan menjatuhkan.” 9Amazia menjawab abdi Allah itu, “Apa yang harus kulakukan dengan seratus talenta yang telah kuberikan kepada pasukan Israel itu?” Abdi Allah itu menjawab, “TUHAN dapat memberikan kepadamu lebih dari itu.” 10Jadi, Amazia membubarkan pasukan yang datang kepadanya dari Efraim supaya mereka kembali ke tempat tinggalnya. Oleh sebab itu, mereka sangat marah terhadap orang Yehuda dan kembali ke tempat tinggalnya dengan amarah yang menyala-nyala. 11Amazia memberanikan dirinya dan memimpin rakyatnya maju ke Lembah Asin dan mengalahkan sepuluh ribu orang dari keturunan Seir. 12Keturunan Yehuda menawan sepuluh ribu orang hidup-hidup dan membawa mereka ke suatu puncak bukit batu, lalu melemparkan mereka dari puncak bukit batu itu sehingga semuanya hancur tercabik-cabik. 13Namun, orang-orang dari pasukan yang dipulangkan Amazia, yaitu yang tidak diperbolehkan untuk pergi bersamanya ke dalam peperangan, menyerbu kota-kota Yehuda dari Samaria sampai Bet-Horon. Mereka menewaskan tiga ribu penduduk dan membawa banyak jarahan. 14Sesudah Amazia kembali dari mengalahkan orang-orang Edom, dia membawa ilah-ilah keturunan Seir dan mendirikannya sebagai ilah-ilahnya. Dia sujud menyembah ilah-ilah itu dan membakar dupa bagi mereka. 15Oleh sebab itu, murka TUHAN bangkit terhadap Amazia. Dia mengutus seorang nabi kepadanya yang berkata, “Mengapa engkau mencari ilah suatu bangsa yang tidak dapat melepaskan bangsanya sendiri dari tanganmu?” 16Ketika nabi itu sedang berbicara, Amazia berkata kepadanya, “Apakah kami telah mengangkatmu sebagai penasihat raja? Diamlah! Apakah kamu mau dibunuh?” Lalu, nabi itu diam setelah berkata, “Sekarang aku tahu bahwa Allah ingin membinasakan engkau sebab engkau telah melakukan hal ini dan tidak mendengarkan nasihatku.” 17Amazia, raja Yehuda, berunding, lalu mengutus orang kepada Yoas, anak Yoahas, anak Yehu, raja Israel, dengan pesan, “Mari kita berhadapan.” 18Namun, Yoas, raja Israel, mengutus orang kepada Amazia, raja Yehuda, dengan pesan, “Duri di Lebanon mengirim pesan kepada pohon aras di Lebanon, dengan berkata: ‘Berikanlah anak perempuanmu untuk menjadi istri anak lelakiku.’ Akan tetapi, binatang hutan di Lebanon melewatinya dan menginjak-injak duri itu. 19Engkau berkata, ‘Lihatlah, aku sudah mengalahkan Edom,’ sehingga engkau tinggi hati dan membanggakan diri. Sekarang, tinggallah di rumahmu. Untuk apa menantang malapetaka sehingga engkau jatuh bersama Yehuda?” 20Namun, Amazia tidak mendengarkannya sebab hal itu telah ditetapkan Allah yang hendak menyerahkannya ke dalam tangan Yoas karena dia menyembah ilah orang Edom. 21Yoas, raja Israel, bergerak maju. Dia dan Amazia, raja Yehuda, saling berhadapan di Bet-Semes, di wilayah Yehuda. 22Yehuda dikalahkan oleh Israel sehingga masing-masing dari mereka lari ke tendanya. 23Yoas, raja Israel, menangkap Amazia, raja Yehuda, anak Yoas, anak Yoahas, di Bet-Semes, dan membawanya ke Yerusalem. Yoas merobohkan tembok Yerusalem dari Pintu Gerbang Efraim sampai ke Pintu Gerbang Sudut, sepanjang 400 hasta. 24Dia mengambil semua emas, perak, dan semua peralatan yang ada di bait Allah dan yang berada di bawah pengawasan keluarga Obed-Edom, juga perbendaharaan istana raja dan para tawanan. Lalu, dia kembali ke Samaria. 25Amazia, anak Yoas, raja Yehuda, masih hidup selama lima belas tahun sesudah kematian Yoas, anak Yoahas, raja Israel. 26Riwayat Amazia selebihnya, dari awal sampai akhir, bukankah semua itu tertulis dalam kitab Sejarah Raja-Raja Yehuda dan Israel?. 27Sejak Amazia berpaling dari TUHAN, orang-orang bersekongkol melawan dia di Yerusalem sehingga dia lari ke Lakhis. Namun, mereka mengirim orang untuk mengejarnya ke Lakhis dan membunuhnya di sana. 28Mereka mengangkutnya dengan kuda dan menguburkannya bersama nenek moyangnya di kota Daud.
1Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jehoaddan, of Jerusalem. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, but not with a perfect heart. 3Now when the kingdom was established to him, he killed his servants who had killed the king his father. 4But he didn’t put their children to death, but did according to that which is written in the law in the book of Moses, as Yahweh commanded, saying, “The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers; but every man shall die for his own sin.” 5Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and ordered them according to their fathers’ houses, under captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, even all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upward, and found them three hundred thousand chosen men, able to go out to war, who could handle spear and shield. 6He hired also one hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel for one hundred talents of silver. 7A man of God came to him, saying, “O king, don’t let the army of Israel go with you; for Yahweh is not with Israel, with all the children of Ephraim. 8But if you will go, take action, be strong for the battle. God will overthrow you before the enemy; for God has power to help, and to overthrow.” 9Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel?” The man of God answered, “Yahweh is able to give you much more than this.” 10Then Amaziah separated them, the army that had come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: therefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in fierce anger. 11Amaziah took courage, and led his people out, and went to the Valley of Salt, and struck ten thousand of the children of Seir. 12The children of Judah carry away ten thousand alive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and threw them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were broken in pieces. 13But the men of the army whom Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell on the cities of Judah, from Samaria even to Beth Horon, and struck of them three thousand, and took much plunder. 14Now after Amaziah had come from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense to them. 15Therefore Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, who said to him, “Why have you sought after the gods of the people, which have not delivered their own people out of your hand?” 16As he talked with him, the king said to him, “Have we made you one of the king’s counselors? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” Then the prophet stopped, and said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel.” 17Then Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.” 18Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as his wife; then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by, and trampled down the thistle. 19You say to yourself that you have struck Edom; and your heart lifts you up to boast. Now stay at home. Why should you meddle with trouble, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you?’” 20But Amaziah would not listen; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom. 21So Joash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 22Judah was defeated by Israel; and they fled every man to his tent. 23Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth Shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 24He took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in God’s house with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria. 25Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years. 26Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, aren’t they written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27Now from the time that Amaziah turned away from following Yahweh, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and killed him there. 28They brought him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
1Amazia, vijf en twintig jaren oud zijnde, werd koning, en regeerde negen en twintig jaren te Jeruzalem; en de naam zijner moeder was Joaddan, van Jeruzalem. 2En hij deed dat recht was in de ogen des HEEREN, doch niet met een volkomen hart. 3Het geschiedde nu, als het koninkrijk aan hem gesterkt was, dat hij zijn knechten, die den koning, zijn vader, geslagen hadden, doodde. 4Doch hun kinderen doodde hij niet, maar hij deed, gelijk in de wet, in het boek van Mozes, geschreven is, waar de HEERE geboden heeft, zeggende: De vaders zullen niet sterven om de kinderen, en de kinderen zullen niet sterven om de vaders; maar een ieder zal om zijn zonde sterven. 5En Amazia vergaderde Juda, en stelde hen, naar de huizen der vaderen, tot oversten van duizenden en tot oversten van honderden, door gans Juda en Benjamin; en hij monsterde hen, van twintig jaren oud en daarboven, en vond hen driehonderd duizend uitgelezenen, uittrekkende ten heire, handelende spies en rondas. 6Daartoe huurde hij uit Israel honderd duizend kloeke helden, voor honderd talenten zilvers. 7Maar er kwam een man Gods tot hem, zeggende: O, koning! laat het heir van Israel met u niet gaan; want de HEERE is niet met Israel, met alle kinderen van Efraim. 8Maar zo gij gaat, doe het, wees sterk ten strijde; God zal u doen vallen voor den vijand; want in God is kracht, om te helpen en om te doen vallen. 9En Amazia zeide tot den man Gods: Maar wat zal men doen met de honderd talenten, die ik aan de benden van Israel gegeven heb? En de man Gods zeide: De HEERE heeft meer dan dit, om u te geven. 10Toen scheidde Amazia die af, te weten de benden, die uit Efraim tot hem gekomen waren, dat zij naar hun plaats gingen; daarom ontstak hun toorn zeer tegen Juda, en zij keerden weder tot hun plaats in hittigheid des toorns. 11Amazia nu sterkte zich, en leidde zijn volk uit, en toog in het Zoutdal, en sloeg van de kinderen van Seir tien duizend. 12Daartoe vingen de kinderen van Juda tien duizend levend, en brachten ze op de hoogte der steenrots, en stieten hen van de spits der steenrots af, dat zij allen barstten. 13Maar de mannen der benden, die Amazia had doen wederkeren, dat zij met hem in den strijd niet zouden trekken, die deden een inval in de steden van Juda, van Samaria af tot Beth-horon toe, en sloegen van hen drie duizend, en roofden veel roofs. 14Het geschiedde nu, nadat Amazia van het slaan der Edomieten gekomen was, en dat hij de goden der kinderen van Seir medegebracht had, dat hij die zich tot goden stelde, en zich voor dezelve neder boog en dien rookte. 15Toen ontstak de toorn des HEEREN tegen Amazia; en Hij zond tot hem een profeet, die zeide tot hem: Waarom hebt gij de goden van dat volk gezocht, die hun volk niet gered hebben uit uw hand? 16En het geschiedde, als hij tot hem sprak, dat hij hem zeide: Heeft men u tot des konings raadgever gesteld? Houd gij op; waarom zouden zij u slaan? Toen hield de profeet op, en zeide: Ik merk, dat God besloten heeft u te verderven, dewijl gij dit gedaan, en naar mijn raad niet gehoord hebt. 17En Amazia, de koning van Juda, werd te rade, dat hij zond tot Joas, den zoon van Joahaz, den zoon van Jehu, den koning van Israel, om te zeggen: Kom, laat ons elkanders aangezicht zien. 18Maar Joas, de koning van Israel, zond tot Amazia, den koning van Juda, om te zeggen: De distel, die op den Libanon is, zond tot den ceder, die op den Libanon is, om te zeggen: Geef uw dochter mijn zoon ter vrouw; maar het gedierte des velds, dat op den Libanon is, ging voorbij, en vertrad de distel. 19Gij zegt: Zie, gij hebt de Edomieten geslagen; daarom heeft uw hart u verheven, om te roemen; nu, blijf in uw huis; waarom zoudt gij u in het kwaad mengen, dat gij vallen zoudt; gij en Juda met u? 20Doch Amazia hoorde niet, want het was van God, opdat Hij hen in hun hand gave, overmits zij de goden der Edomieten gezocht hadden. 21Zo toog Joas, de koning van Israel, op, en hij en Amazia, de koning van Juda, zagen elkanders aangezichten te Beth-Semes, dat in Juda is. 22En Juda werd geslagen voor het aangezicht van Israel; en zij vloden een iegelijk in zijn tenten. 23En Joas, de koning van Israel, greep Amazia, den koning van Juda, den zoon van Joas, den zoon van Joahaz, te Beth-Semes; en hij bracht hem te Jeruzalem, en hij brak aan den muur van Jeruzalem, van de poort van Efraim tot aan de Hoekpoort, vierhonderd ellen. 24Daartoe nam hij al het goud, en het zilver, en al de vaten, die in het huis Gods gevonden werden, bij Obed-Edom, en de schatten van het huis des konings, mitsgaders gijzelaars, en hij keerde weder naar Samaria. 25Amazia nu, de zoon van Joas, de koning van Juda, leefde na den dood van Joas, den zoon van Joahaz, den koning van Israel, vijftien jaren. 26Het overige nu der geschiedenissen van Amazia, de eerste en de laatste, ziet, zijn die niet geschreven in het boek der koningen van Juda en Israel? 27Van den tijd nu af, dat Amazia afgeweken was van achter den HEERE, zo maakten zij in Jeruzalem een verbintenis tegen hem; doch hij vluchtte naar Lachis. Toen zonden zij hem na tot Lachis, en doodden hem aldaar. 28En zij brachten hem op paarden, en begroeven hem bij zijn vaderen in de stad van Juda.
