1CIERTO no me es conveniente gloriarme; mas vendré á las visiones y á las revelaciones del Señor. 2Conozco á un hombre en Cristo, que hace catorce años (si en el cuerpo, no lo sé; si fuera del cuerpo, no lo sé: Dios lo sabe) fué arrebatado hasta el tercer cielo. 3Y conozco tal hombre, (si en el cuerpo, ó fuera del cuerpo, no lo sé: Dios lo sabe,) 4Que fué arrebatado al paraíso, donde oyó palabras secretas que el hombre no puede decir. 5De este tal me gloriaré, mas de mí mismo nada me gloriaré, sino en mis flaquezas. 6Por lo cual si quisiere gloriarme, no seré insensato: porque diré verdad: empero lo dejo, porque nadie piense de mí más de lo que en mí ve, ú oye de mí. 7Y porque la grandeza de las revelaciones no me levante descomedidamente, me es dado un aguijón en mi carne, un mensajero de Satanás que me abofetee, para que no me enaltezca sobremanera. 8Por lo cual tres veces he rogado al Señor, que se quite de mí. 9Y me ha dicho: Bástate mi gracia; porque mi potencia en la flaqueza se perfecciona. Por tanto, de buena gana me gloriaré más bien en mis flaquezas, porque habite en mí la potencia de Cristo. 10Por lo cual me gozo en las flaquezas, en afrentas, en necesidades, en persecuciones, en angustias por Cristo; porque cuando soy flaco, entonces soy poderoso. 11Heme hecho un necio en gloriarme: vosotros me constreñisteis; pues yo había de ser alabado de vosotros: porque en nada he sido menos que los sumos apóstoles, aunque soy nada. 12Con todo esto, las señales de apóstol han sido hechas entre vosotros en toda paciencia, en señales, y en prodigios, y en maravillas. 13Porque ¿qué hay en que habéis sido menos que las otras iglesias, sino en que yo mismo no os he sido carga? Perdonadme esta injuria. 14He aquí estoy aparejado para ir á vosotros la tercera vez, y no os seré gravoso; porque no busco vuestras cosas, sino á vosotros: porque no han de atesorar los hijos para los padres, sino los padres para los hijos. 15Empero yo de muy buena gana despenderé y seré despendido por vuestras almas, aunque amándoos más, sea amado menos. 16Mas sea así, yo no os he agravado: sino que, como soy astuto, os he tomado por engaño. 17¿Acaso os he engañado por alguno de los que he enviado á vosotros? 18Rogué á Tito, y envié con él al hermano. ¿Os engañó quizá Tito? ¿no hemos procedido con el mismo espíritu y por las mismas pisadas? 19¿Pensáis aún que nos excusamos con vosotros? Delante de Dios en Cristo hablamos: mas todo, muy amados, por vuestra edificación. 20Porque temo que cuando llegare, no os halle tales como quiero, y yo sea hallado de vosotros cual no queréis; que haya entre vosotros contiendas, envidias, iras, disensiones, detracciones, murmuraciones, elaciones, bandos: 21Que cuando volviere, me humille Dios entre vosotros, y haya de llorar por muchos de los que antes habrán pecado, y no se han arrepentido de la inmundicia y fornicación y deshonestidad que han cometido.
1It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. For I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I don’t know, or whether out of the body, I don’t know; God knows), such a one caught up into the third heaven. 3I know such a man (whether in the body, or outside of the body, I don’t know; God knows), 4how he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. 5On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in my weaknesses. 6For if I would desire to boast, I will not be foolish; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, so that no man may think more of me than that which he sees in me, or hears from me. 7By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively. 8Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. 10Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong. 11I have become foolish in boasting. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for in nothing was I inferior to the very best apostles, though I am nothing. 12Truly the signs of an apostle were worked among you in all patience, in signs and wonders and mighty works. 13For what is there in which you were made inferior to the rest of the assemblies, unless it is that I myself was not a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong. 14Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I seek not your possessions, but you. For the children ought not to save up for the parents, but the parents for the children. 15I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less? 16But be it so, I did not myself burden you. But, being crafty, I caught you with deception. 17Did I take advantage of you by anyone of them whom I have sent to you? 18I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? Didn’t we walk in the same spirit? Didn’t we walk in the same steps? 19Again, do you think that we are excusing ourselves to you? In the sight of God we speak in Christ. But all things, beloved, are for your edifying. 20For I am afraid that by any means, when I come, I might find you not the way I want to, and that I might be found by you as you don’t desire; that by any means there would be strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, whisperings, proud thoughts, riots; 21that again when I come my God would humble me before you, and I would mourn for many of those who have sinned before now, and not repented of the uncleanness and sexual immorality and lustfulness which they committed.
1Te roemen is mij waarlijk niet oorbaar; want ik zal komen tot gezichten en openbaringen des Heeren. 2Ik ken een mens in Christus, voor veertien jaren (of het geschied zij in het lichaam, weet ik niet, of buiten het lichaam, weet ik niet, God weet het), dat de zodanige opgetrokken is geweest tot in den derden hemel; 3En ik ken een zodanig mens (of het in het lichaam, of buiten het lichaam geschied zij, weet ik niet, God weet het), 4Dat hij opgetrokken is geweest in het paradijs, en gehoord heeft onuitsprekelijke woorden, die het een mens niet geoorloofd is te spreken. 5Van den zodanige zal ik roemen, doch van mijzelven zal ik niet roemen, dan in mijn zwakheden. 6Want zo ik roemen wil, ik zal niet onwijs zijn, want ik zal de waarheid zeggen; maar ik houde daarvan af, opdat niemand van mij denke boven hetgeen hij ziet, dat ik ben, of dat hij uit mij hoort. 7En opdat ik mij door de uitnemendheid der openbaringen niet zou verheffen, zo is mij gegeven een scherpe doorn in het vlees, namelijk een engel des satans, dat hij mij met vuisten slaan zou, opdat ik mij niet zou verheffen. 8Hierover heb ik den Heere driemaal gebeden, opdat hij van mij zou wijken. 9En Hij heeft tot mij gezegd: Mijn genade is u genoeg; want Mijn kracht wordt in zwakheid volbracht. Zo zal ik dan veel liever roemen in mijn zwakheden, opdat de kracht van Christus in mij wone. 10Daarom heb ik een welbehagen in zwakheden, in smaadheden, in noden, in vervolgingen, in benauwdheden, om Christus' wil; want als ik zwak ben, dan ben ik machtig. 11Ik ben roemende onwijs geworden; gij hebt mij genoodzaakt, want ik behoorde van u geprezen te zijn; want ik ben in geen ding minder geweest dan de uitnemendste apostelen, hoewel ik niets ben. 12De merktekenen van een apostel zijn onder u betoond in alle lijdzaamheid, met tekenen, en wonderen, en krachten. 13Want wat is er, waarin gij minder geweest zijt dan de andere Gemeenten, anders, dan dat ikzelf u niet lastig ben geweest? Vergeeft mij dit ongelijk. 14Ziet, ik ben ten derden male gereed, om tot u te komen, en zal u niet lastig zijn; want ik zoek niet het uwe, maar u; want de kinderen moeten niet schatten vergaderen voor de ouders, maar de ouders voor de kinderen. 15En ik zal zeer gaarne de kosten doen, en voor uw zielen ten koste gegeven worden; hoewel ik, u overvloediger beminnende, weiniger bemind worde. 16Doch het zij zo, ik heb u niet bezwaard; maar alzo ik listig was, heb ik u met bedrog gevangen. 17Heb ik door iemand dergenen, die ik tot u gezonden heb, van u mijn voordeel gezocht? 18Ik heb Titus gebeden, en den broeder medegezonden; heeft ook Titus van u zijn voordeel gezocht? Hebben wij niet in denzelfden geest gewandeld? Hebben wij niet gewandeld in dezelfde voetstappen? 19Meent gij wederom, dat wij ons bij u verontschuldigen? Wij spreken in de tegenwoordigheid van God in Christus; en dit alles, geliefden, tot uw stichting. 20Want ik vrees, dat als ik gekomen zal zijn, ik u niet enigszins zal vinden zodanigen als ik wil, en dat ik van u zal gevonden worden zodanig als gij niet wilt; dat er niet enigszins zijn twisten, nijdigheden, toorn, gekijf, achterklap, oorblazingen, opgeblazenheden, beroerten; 21Opdat wederom, als ik zal gekomen zijn, mijn God mij niet vernedere bij u, en ik rouw hebbe over velen, die te voren gezondigd hebben, en die zich niet bekeerd zullen hebben van de onreinigheid, en hoererij, en ontuchtigheid, die zij gedaan hebben.
