God die zijn volk hoedt, en de Goede Herder die zijn leven geeft.
Een herder zorgt voor zijn schapen, zoekt ze als ze weg zijn en beschermt ze. Zo zorgt Jezus voor ons.

De Heer is mijn herder
Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.
What happens here
David, die zelf herder was, zingt over God als zijn herder: rust, leiding, bescherming in het dal.
How it points ahead
De herder hier is God zelf. Als Jezus later zegt 'Ik ben de goede herder', zegt Hij iets over wie Hij is.
De lammeren in zijn armen
He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.
What happens here
Troost voor ballingen: God komt als een herder die de lammeren draagt en de zogenden zacht leidt.
How it points ahead
Kracht en tederheid in één. Jezus neemt kinderen in zijn armen (Marcus 10:16).
Eén herder, uit David
I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.
What happens here
De leiders van Israël hebben de kudde uitgebuit. God belooft: Ik zal zelf mijn schapen zoeken, en één herder aanstellen, 'mijn knecht David'.

God zelf komt, en toch is het een Zoon van David. In Jezus zijn die twee één.

Het ene verloren schaap
“Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?

Jezus vertelt over een herder die er negenennegentig achterlaat om er één te zoeken.
How it comes together
Hier doet Jezus wat Ezechiël 34 beloofde: zoeken wat verloren is. Hij vertelt het aan mensen die morren dat Hij met zondaars eet.
Ik ben de goede herder
I am the good shepherd.The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Jezus stelt zich tegenover huurlingen die vluchten als de wolf komt.

Een herder die zijn leven geeft: dat gaat verder dan Psalm 23. De herder wordt zelf het lam.
