1Τότε προεφήτευσαν ο προφήτης Αγγαίος και Ζαχαρίας ο υιός του Ιδδώ, προς τους Ιουδαίους τους εν Ιουδαία και Ιερουσαλήμ, προφητεύοντες προς αυτούς εν ονόματι του Θεού του Ισραήλ. 2Και εσηκώθησαν Ζοροβάβελ ο υιός του Σαλαθιήλ και Ιησούς ο υιός του Ιωσεδέκ και ήρχισαν να οικοδομώσι τον οίκον του Θεού τον εν Ιερουσαλήμ· και μετ' αυτών οι προφήται του Θεού βοηθούντες αυτούς. 3Εν τούτω τω καιρώ ελθόντες προς αυτούς Ταθναΐ, ο έπαρχος των εντεύθεν του ποταμού, και ο Σεθάρ-βοσναΐ και οι συνέταιροι αυτών, είπον προς αυτούς ούτω· Τις προσέταξεν εις εσάς να οικοδομήτε τον οίκον τούτον και να εγείρητε τούτον τον τοίχον; 4Και τότε είπομεν προς αυτούς ποία είναι τα ονόματα των ανδρών, οίτινες οικοδομούσι την οικοδομήν ταύτην. 5Αλλ' επί τους πρεσβυτέρους των Ιουδαίων ήτο ο οφθαλμός του Θεού αυτών, και δεν ηδύναντο να παύσωσιν αυτούς, εωσού έλθη η υπόθεσις προς τον Δαρείον· και τότε έδωκαν απόκρισιν δι' επιστολής περί τούτου. 6Αντίγραφον της επιστολής, την οποίαν Ταθναΐ, ο έπαρχος των εντεύθεν του ποταμού, και ο Σεθάρ-βοσναΐ και οι συνέταιροι αυτού οι Αφαρσαχαίοι οι εντεύθεν του ποταμού, απέστειλαν προς Δαρείον τον βασιλέα. 7Απέστειλαν επιστολήν προς αυτόν, εν ή ήτο γεγραμμένον ούτως· Εις τον Δαρείον τον βασιλέα, πάσα ειρήνη. 8Γνωστόν έστω εις τον βασιλέα, ότι υπήγαμεν εις την επαρχίαν της Ιουδαίας προς τον οίκον του μεγάλου Θεού, και αυτός οικοδομείται με λίθους μεγάλους και εντίθενται ξύλα εις τους τοίχους, και το έργον τούτο προχωρεί ταχέως και ευοδούται εις τας χείρας αυτών. 9Και ερωτήσαντες εκείνους τους πρεσβυτέρους, ελαλήσαμεν προς αυτούς ούτω· Τις προσέταξεν εις εσάς να οικοδομήτε τον οίκον τούτον και να εγείρητε τούτον τον τοίχον; 10Έτι και τα ονόματα αυτών ηρωτήσαμεν, διά να σοι φανερώσωμεν και γράψωμεν προς σε τα ονόματα των ανδρών των επί κεφαλής αυτών. 11Και απεκρίθησαν προς ημάς ούτω, λέγοντες, Ημείς είμεθα οι δούλοι του Θεού του ουρανού και της γης, και οικοδομούμεν τον οίκον τον προ πολλών ήδη ετών οικοδομηθέντα, τον οποίον βασιλεύς μέγας του Ισραήλ ωκοδόμησε και ανήγειρεν· 12αφού όμως οι πατέρες ημών παρώργισαν τον Θεόν του ουρανού, παρέδωκεν αυτούς εις την χείρα του Ναβουχοδονόσορ, βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος, του Χαλδαίου, και κατέστρεψε τον οίκον τούτον και μετώκισε τον λαόν εις την Βαβυλώνα. 13Πλην εν τω πρώτω έτει Κύρου του βασιλέως της Βαβυλώνος, ο βασιλεύς Κύρος έδωκε προσταγήν να οικοδομηθή ούτος ο οίκος του Θεού. 14Και τα σκεύη έτι τα χρυσά και αργυρά του οίκου του Θεού, τα οποία ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ έλαβεν εκ του ναού του εν Ιερουσαλήμ και έφερεν αυτά εις τον ναόν της Βαβυλώνος, ταύτα ο Κύρος ο βασιλεύς εσήκωσεν εκ του ναού της Βαβυλώνος, και παρεδόθησαν εις τον ονομαζόμενον Σασαβασσάρ, τον οποίον είχε κάμει έπαρχον· 15και είπε προς αυτόν, Λάβε τα σκεύη ταύτα, ύπαγε, φέρε αυτά εις τον ναόν τον εν Ιερουσαλήμ, και ο οίκος του Θεού ας οικοδομηθή εν τω τόπω αυτού. 16Τότε ελθών ούτος ο Σασαβασσάρ έθεσε τα θεμέλια του οίκου του Θεού, του εν Ιερουσαλήμ· και απ' εκείνου του χρόνου έως της σήμερον οικοδομείται και δεν ετελείωσε. 17Τώρα λοιπόν, εάν φαίνηται αρεστόν εις τον βασιλέα, ας γείνη έρευνα εν τω θησαυροφυλακίω του βασιλέως τω εν Βαβυλώνι, εάν ήναι αληθινόν ότι εξεδόθη διαταγή παρά Κύρου του βασιλέως να οικοδομηθή ο οίκος ούτος του Θεού εν Ιερουσαλήμ· και ας αποστείλη ο βασιλεύς προς ημάς την θέλησιν αυτού περί τούτου.
1Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel they prophesied to them. 2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. 3At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and their companions, and said thus to them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?” 4Then we told them in this way, what the names of the men were who were making this building. 5But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, until the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it. 6The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king; 7they sent a letter to him, in which was written thus: To Darius the king, all peace. 8Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands. 9Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?” 10We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head. 11Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished. 12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. 14The gold and silver vessels also of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15and he said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’ 16Then the same Sheshbazzar came, and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not completed. 17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
1Haggai nu, de profeet, en Zacharia, de zoon van Iddo, profeteerden tot de Joden, die in Juda en te Jeruzalem waren; in den naam Gods van Israel profeteerden zij tot hen. 2Toen maakten zich op Zerubbabel, de zoon van Sealthiel, en Jesua, de zoon van Jozadak, en begonnen te bouwen het huis Gods, Die te Jeruzalem woont; en met hen de profeten Gods, die hen ondersteunden. 3Te dier tijd kwam tot hen Thathnai, de landvoogd aan deze zijde der rivier, en Sthar-Boznai, en hun gezelschap, en zeiden aldus tot hen: Wie heeft ulieden bevel gegeven dit huis te bouwen, en dezen muur te voltrekken? 4Toen zeiden wij aldus tot hen, en welke de namen waren der mannen, die dit gebouw bouwden. 5Doch het oog huns Gods was over de oudsten der Joden, dat zij hun niet beletten, totdat de zaak aan Darius kwam, en zij alsdan daarover een brief wederbrachten. 6Afschrift des briefs, dien Thathnai, de landvoogd aan deze zijde der rivier, met Sthar-Boznai, en zijn gezelschap, de Afarsechaieten, die aan deze zijde der rivier waren, aan den koning Darius zond. 7Zij zonden een verhaal aan hem; en daarin was aldus geschreven: Den koning Darius zij alle vrede. 8Den koning zij bekend, dat wij getogen zijn naar het landschap Juda, ten huize des groten Gods, hetwelk gebouwd wordt met grote stenen, en het hout wordt gelegd in de wanden; en datzelve werk wordt ras gedaan, en gaat voorspoediglijk door hun handen voort. 9Toen hebben wij denzelven oudsten gevraagd, en aldus tot hen gezegd: Wie heeft ulieden bevel gegeven dit huis te bouwen, en dezen muur te voltrekken? 10Wijders hebben wij hun ook hun namen afgevraagd, dat wij ze u bekend maakten; dat wij mochten overschrijven de namen der mannen, die hoofden onder hen zijn. 11En zij hebben ons dusdanig antwoord wedergegeven, zeggende: Wij zijn knechten van den God des hemels en der aarde, en bouwen het huis, dat vele jaren voor dezen is gebouwd geweest; want een groot koning van Israel had het gebouwd en voltrokken. 12Maar nadat onze vaders den God des hemels hadden vertoornd, heeft Hij hen gegeven in de hand van Nebukadnezar, den koning van Babel, den Chaldeeer; dewelke dat huis heeft vernield, en het volk naar Babel weggevoerd. 13Doch in het eerste jaar van Kores, koning van Babel, heeft de koning Kores bevel gegeven dit huis Gods te bouwen. 14Ja, de vaten van Gods huis, welke van goud en zilver waren, die Nebukadnezar uit den tempel, die te Jeruzalem was, had weggenomen en dezelve gebracht in den tempel van Babel, die heeft de koning Kores uitgehaald uit den tempel van Babel, en zij zijn gegeven aan een, wiens naam was Sesbazar, dien hij tot een landvoogd had gesteld. 15En hij zeide tot hem: Neem deze vaten, ga ze afvoeren in den tempel, die te Jeruzalem is, en laat het huis Gods gebouwd worden op zijn plaats. 16Toen kwam dezelve Sesbazar; hij legde de fondamenten van het huis Gods, Die te Jeruzalem woont; en er is van toen af tot nu toe gebouwd, doch niet volbracht. 17Zo het dan nu den koning goeddunkt, laat er gezocht worden in het schathuis des konings aldaar, dat te Babel is, of het zij, dat een bevel van den koning Kores gegeven zij, om dit huis Gods te Jeruzalem te bouwen; en dat men des konings believen hiervan tot ons zende.
