1У ранцї встав Еробаах, се є Гедеон, з усїма людьми, що були при йому, та й отаборились вони коло криницї Гарод. Табір же Мадиянський стояв на північ від його, коло горба Море на поділлї. 2І сказав Господь Гедеонові: Людей в тебе надто багацько, так що я не можу подати Мадиянїїв у руки їх, а то б Ізраїль пишався передо мною та казав би: Моя рука вирятувала мене. 3Оце покликни покликом, щоб люде чули: Хто почувається боязьким і трусливим, нехай собі вертається від гори Галаада. І вернулось людей двайцять і дві тисячі, так що зісталось тільки десять тисячей. 4І рече Господь Гедеонові: Ще побагацко людей. Веди їх до водопійла, щоб менї там їх випробувати. І рече Господь Гедеонові: Хто хлептати ме воду язиком, як хлепчуть собаки, того станови окроме, так само й того, хто стане навколїшки, щоб пити. 6Налїчено ж тих, що хлептали з руки, триста чоловіка, всї ж инші люде становились навколїшки, щоб напитись води. 7І сказав Господь Гедеонові: Трома сотнями чоловіка, що воду хлептали, вирятую вас і подам Мадиянїїв в руки ваші, усї ж инші люде нехай вертають кожний у домівку свою. 8Тодї взяли вони харчі в людей і труби їх до себе; усїх же Ізрайлитян роспустив він по домівках, і вдержав тільки триста чоловіка. А табір Мадиянїйський стояв під ними на долинї. 9Повелїв же йому тієї ночі Господь: Устань, іди в табір униз: бо я подаю його тобі на поталу. 10Коли ж боїшся туди вибратись, так ійди з твоїм слугою Фурою в табір; 11І підслухай, що там говорять. Тодї наберешся духу пробратись туди. Він і пійшов із своїм слугою Фурою, та й пробравсь близенько до військових людей у таборі. 12Було ж там як сарани Мадиянїя, Амалика і тих що з востоку таборян, а верблюдів їх безлїч, як піску на морському березї. 13Як підобрався ж Гедеон, от і росказує один одному свій сон словами: Снивсь менї сон, що котивсь ячмінний книш по Мадиянїйському таборові; докотивсь до гетьманського намету і ударив в нього так, що намет упав і перевернувсь до гори та й розпався. 14А другий каже: Се не що инше, як меч Гедеонів Йоасенка Ізрайлитянина; Бог подав йому в руки Мидиянїїв і ввесь табір. 15Як же почув Гедеон оповіданнє сну і його віщуваннє, припав він богобоязливо до землї, вернувся зараз до Ізраїлського коша та й гукне: Вставайте! бо Господь подав табір Мадиянїйський нам на поталу. 16Тодї подїлив триста чоловіка на три військові купи і дав їм усїм труби та порожні глеки в руки; у горшках же були каганцї. 17І звелїв їм: Позирайте на мене та й робіте так само, як я: 18Як затрублю я в труби вкупі з усїма, що будуть при менї, затрубіте й ви так само в труби з усїх боків навкруги коша та й кричіте: Меч Господень і Гедеонів! 19От і пробравсь Гедеон із стома чоловіками, що були при йому, в початку середньої ночньої сторожі до краю табору, а там саме перемінено сторожу. Тодї затрубили в труби та й порозбивали глеки в руках. 20Тодї затрубили разом усї три військові купи, порозбивали глеки, взяли каганцї лїворуч, а праворуч труби, та й закричали: Меч Господень та Гедеонів! 21Кожен при тому стояв на свойму місцї навкруги табору; у коші ж все бігало кругом та й кинулись навтеки кричучи не своїм голосом. 22Як затрубили ж у триста труб, обернув Господь мечі їх у таборі проти своїх людей, і все, що було в таборі, побігло до Бетситта на Цереру, до берега Абелмеголи під Табатом. 23Тодї покликано Ізрайлитян із Нафталїя, із Ассера і з усього поколїння Манассіїного, і вганяли вони за Мидиянїями. 24І розіслав Гедеон посли по всїх горах Ефраїмових з наказом: Виступайте проти Мадиянїїв і відріжте їм переправу через воду до Бет-Бара і на Йорданї. І скликано всї Ефраїмії і обсїли вони воду до Бет-Бара і на Йорданї. 25І зайняли в полонь два Мадиянські князї Орива (Ворона) та Зива (Вовка) й стяли Орива під Борон-скелею, а Зива коло Вовчої печери. Тодї вганяли за Мидиянїями; голови ж Оривову та Зивову принесли до Гедеона за Йордань.
1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod: and the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” Twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. 4Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that of whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.” 6The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water. 7Yahweh said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.” 8So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley. 9That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand. 10But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp: 11and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp. 12The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude. 13When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow; and he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.” 15It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped; and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!” 16He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers. 17He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do. 18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’” 19So Gideon, and the hundred men who were with him, came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands. 20The three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!” 21They each stood in his place around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight. 22They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. 23The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian. 24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian, and take before them the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan. 25They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the wine press of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Toen keerden uit het volk weder twee en twintig duizend, dat er tienduizend overbleven. 4En de HEERE zeide tot Gideon: Nog is des volks te veel; doe hen afgaan naar het water, en Ik zal ze u aldaar beproeven; en het zal geschieden, van welken Ik tot u zeggen zal: Deze zal met u trekken, die zal met u trekken; maar al degene, van welken Ik zeggen zal: Deze zal niet met u trekken, die zal niet trekken. 5En hij deed het volk afgaan naar het water. Toen zeide de HEERE tot Gideon: Al wie met zijn tong uit het water zal lekken, gelijk als een hond zou lekken, dien zult gij alleen stellen; desgelijks al wie op zijn knieen zal bukken om te drinken. 6Toen was het getal dergenen, die met hun hand tot hun mond gelekt hadden, driehonderd man; maar alle overigen des volks hadden op hun knieen gebukt, om water te drinken. 7En de HEERE zeide tot Gideon: Door deze driehonderd mannen, die gelekt hebben, zal Ik ulieden verlossen, en de Midianieten in uw hand geven; daarom laat al dat volk weggaan, een ieder naar zijn plaats. 8En het volk nam den teerkost in hun hand, en hun bazuinen; en hij liet al die mannen van Israel gaan, een iegelijk naar zijn tent; maar die driehonderd man behield hij. En hij had het heirleger der Midianieten beneden in het dal. 9En het geschiedde in denzelven nacht, dat de HEERE tot hem zeide: Sta op, ga henen af in het leger, want Ik heb het in uw hand gegeven. 10Vreest gij dan nog af te gaan, zo ga af, gij, en Pura, uw jongen, naar het leger. 11En gij zult horen, wat zij zullen spreken, en daarna zullen uw handen gesterkt worden, dat gij aftrekken zult in het leger. Toen ging hij af, met Pura, zijn jongen, tot het uiterste der schildwachten, die in het leger waren. 12En de Midianieten, en Amalekieten, en al de kinderen van het oosten, lagen in het dal, gelijk sprinkhanen in menigte, en hun kemelen waren ontelbaar, gelijk het zand, dat aan den oever der zee is, in menigte. 13Toen nu Gideon aankwam, ziet, zo was er een man, die zijn metgezel een droom vertelde, en zeide: Zie, ik heb een droom gedroomd, en zie, een geroost gerstebrood wentelde zich in het leger der Midianieten, en het kwam tot aan de tent, en sloeg haar, dat zij viel, en keerde haar om, het onderste boven, dat de tent er lag. 14En zijn metgezel antwoordde, en zeide: Dit is niet anders, dan het zwaard van Gideon, de zoon van Joas, de Israelietischen man; God heeft de Midianieten en dit ganse leger in zijn hand gegeven. 15En het geschiedde, als Gideon de vertelling dezes drooms, en zijn uitlegging hoorde, zo aanbad hij; en hij keerde weder tot het leger van Israel, en zeide: Maakt u op, want de HEERE heeft het leger der Midianieten in ulieder hand gegeven. 16En hij deelde de driehonderd man in drie hopen; en hij gaf een iegelijk een bazuin in zijn hand, en ledige kruiken, en fakkelen in het midden der kruiken. 17En hij zeide tot hen: Ziet naar mij en doet alzo; en ziet, als ik zal komen aan het uiterste des legers, zo zal het geschieden, gelijk als ik zal doen, alzo zult gij doen. 18Als ik met de bazuin zal blazen, ik en allen, die met mij zijn, dan zult gijlieden ook met de bazuin blazen, rondom het ganse leger, en gij zult zeggen: Voor den HEERE en voor Gideon! 19Alzo kwam Gideon, en honderd mannen, die met hem waren, in het uiterste des legers, in het begin van de middelste nachtwaak, als zij maar even de wachters gesteld hadden; en zij bliezen met de bazuinen, ook sloegen zij de kruiken, die in hun hand waren, in stukken. 20Alzo bliezen de drie hopen met de bazuinen, en braken de kruiken; en zij hielden met de linkerhand de fakkelen, en met hun rechterhand de bazuinen om te blazen; en zij riepen: Het zwaard van den HEERE, en van Gideon! 21En zij stonden, een iegelijk in zijn plaats, rondom het leger. Toen verliep het ganse leger, en zij schreeuwden en vloden. 22Als de driehonderd met de bazuinen bliezen, zo zette de HEERE het zwaard des een tegen den anderen, en dat in het ganse leger; en het leger vluchtte tot Beth-Sitta toe naar Tseredath, tot aan de grens van Abel-Mehola, boven Tabbath. 23Toen werden de mannen van Israel bijeengeroepen, uit Nafthali, en uit Aser, en uit gans Manasse; en zij jaagden de Midianieten achterna. 24Ook zond Gideon boden in het ganse gebergte van Efraim, zeggende: Komt af de Midianieten tegemoet, en beneemt hunlieden de wateren, tot aan Beth-bara, te weten de Jordaan; alzo werd alle man van Efraim bijeengeroepen, en zij benamen hun de wateren tot aan Beth-bara, en de Jordaan. 25En zij vingen twee vorsten der Midianieten, Oreb en Zeeb, en doodden Oreb op den rotssteen Oreb, en Zeeb doodden zij in de perskuip van Zeeb, en vervolgden de Midianieten; en zij brachten de hoofden van Oreb en Zeeb tot Gideon, over de Jordaan.
