1Men profeten Haggai och Sakarja, Iddos son, profeterna, profeterade för judarna i Juda och Jerusalem, i Israels Guds namn, efter vilket de voro uppkallade. 2Och Serubbabel, Sealtiels son, och Jesua, Josadaks son, stodo då upp och begynte bygga på Guds hus i Jerusalem, och med dem Guds profeter, som understödde dem. 3Vid samma tid kommo till dem Tattenai, ståthållaren i landet på andra sidan floden, och Setar-Bosenai och dessas medbröder, och sade så till dem: »Vem har givit eder tillåtelse att bygga detta hus och att sätta denna mur i stånd?» 4Då sade vi dem vad de män hette, som uppförde byggnaden. 5Och över judarnas äldste vakade deras Guds öga, så att man lovade att icke lägga något hinder i vägen för dem, till dess saken hade kommit inför Darejaves; sedan skulle man sända dem en skrivelse härom. 6Detta är nu vad som stod skrivet i det brev som Tattenai, ståthållaren i landet på andra sidan floden, och Setar-Bosenai och hans medbröder, afarsekiterna, som bodde på andra sidan floden, sände till konung Darejaves; 7de sände nämligen till honom en berättelse, och däri var så skrivet: »Frid vare i allo med konung Darejaves. 8Det vare veterligt för konungen att vi kommo till det judiska hövdingdömet, till den store Gudens hus. Detta håller man nu på att bygga upp med stora stenar, och i väggarna lägger man in trävirke; och arbetet bedrives med omsorg och har god framgång under deras händer. 9Då frågade vi de äldste där och sade till dem så: 'Vem har givit eder tillåtelse att bygga detta hus och att sätta denna mur i stånd?' 10Vi frågade dem ock huru de hette, för att kunna underrätta dig därom, och för att teckna upp namnen på de män som stodo i spetsen för dem. 11Och detta var det svar som de gåvo oss: 'Vi äro himmelens och jordens Guds tjänare, och vi bygga nu upp det hus som fordom, för många år sedan, var uppbyggt här, och som en stor konung i Israel hade byggt och fulländat. 12Men eftersom våra fäder förtörnade himmelens Gud, gav han dem i kaldéen Nebukadnessars, den babyloniske konungens, hand; och han förstörde detta hus och förde folket bort till Babel. 13Men i den babyloniske konungen Kores' första regeringsår gav konung Kores befallning att man åter skulle bygga upp detta Guds hus. 14Och tillika tog konung Kores ur templet i Babel de kärl av guld och silver, som hade tillhört Guds hus, men som Nebukadnessar hade tagit ur templet i Jerusalem och fört till templet i Babel; och de överlämnades åt en man vid namn Sesbassar, som han hade satt till ståthållare. 15Och till honom sade han: Tag dessa kärl och far åstad och sätt in dem i templet i Jerusalem; ty Guds hus skall åter byggas upp på sin plats. 16Så kom då denne Sesbassar hit och lade grunden till Guds hus i Jerusalem. Och från den tiden och intill nu har man byggt därpå, och det är ännu icke färdigt.' 17Om det nu täckes konungen, må man göra efterforskningar i konungens skattkammare därborta i Babel om det är så, att konung Kores har givit tillåtelse att bygga detta Guds hus i Jerusalem; därefter må konungen meddela oss sin vilja härom.»
1Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel they prophesied to them. 2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. 3At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and their companions, and said thus to them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?” 4Then we told them in this way, what the names of the men were who were making this building. 5But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, until the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it. 6The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king; 7they sent a letter to him, in which was written thus: To Darius the king, all peace. 8Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands. 9Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?” 10We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head. 11Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished. 12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. 14The gold and silver vessels also of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15and he said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’ 16Then the same Sheshbazzar came, and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not completed. 17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
1Haggai nu, de profeet, en Zacharia, de zoon van Iddo, profeteerden tot de Joden, die in Juda en te Jeruzalem waren; in den naam Gods van Israel profeteerden zij tot hen. 2Toen maakten zich op Zerubbabel, de zoon van Sealthiel, en Jesua, de zoon van Jozadak, en begonnen te bouwen het huis Gods, Die te Jeruzalem woont; en met hen de profeten Gods, die hen ondersteunden. 3Te dier tijd kwam tot hen Thathnai, de landvoogd aan deze zijde der rivier, en Sthar-Boznai, en hun gezelschap, en zeiden aldus tot hen: Wie heeft ulieden bevel gegeven dit huis te bouwen, en dezen muur te voltrekken? 4Toen zeiden wij aldus tot hen, en welke de namen waren der mannen, die dit gebouw bouwden. 5Doch het oog huns Gods was over de oudsten der Joden, dat zij hun niet beletten, totdat de zaak aan Darius kwam, en zij alsdan daarover een brief wederbrachten. 6Afschrift des briefs, dien Thathnai, de landvoogd aan deze zijde der rivier, met Sthar-Boznai, en zijn gezelschap, de Afarsechaieten, die aan deze zijde der rivier waren, aan den koning Darius zond. 7Zij zonden een verhaal aan hem; en daarin was aldus geschreven: Den koning Darius zij alle vrede. 8Den koning zij bekend, dat wij getogen zijn naar het landschap Juda, ten huize des groten Gods, hetwelk gebouwd wordt met grote stenen, en het hout wordt gelegd in de wanden; en datzelve werk wordt ras gedaan, en gaat voorspoediglijk door hun handen voort. 9Toen hebben wij denzelven oudsten gevraagd, en aldus tot hen gezegd: Wie heeft ulieden bevel gegeven dit huis te bouwen, en dezen muur te voltrekken? 10Wijders hebben wij hun ook hun namen afgevraagd, dat wij ze u bekend maakten; dat wij mochten overschrijven de namen der mannen, die hoofden onder hen zijn. 11En zij hebben ons dusdanig antwoord wedergegeven, zeggende: Wij zijn knechten van den God des hemels en der aarde, en bouwen het huis, dat vele jaren voor dezen is gebouwd geweest; want een groot koning van Israel had het gebouwd en voltrokken. 12Maar nadat onze vaders den God des hemels hadden vertoornd, heeft Hij hen gegeven in de hand van Nebukadnezar, den koning van Babel, den Chaldeeer; dewelke dat huis heeft vernield, en het volk naar Babel weggevoerd. 13Doch in het eerste jaar van Kores, koning van Babel, heeft de koning Kores bevel gegeven dit huis Gods te bouwen. 14Ja, de vaten van Gods huis, welke van goud en zilver waren, die Nebukadnezar uit den tempel, die te Jeruzalem was, had weggenomen en dezelve gebracht in den tempel van Babel, die heeft de koning Kores uitgehaald uit den tempel van Babel, en zij zijn gegeven aan een, wiens naam was Sesbazar, dien hij tot een landvoogd had gesteld. 15En hij zeide tot hem: Neem deze vaten, ga ze afvoeren in den tempel, die te Jeruzalem is, en laat het huis Gods gebouwd worden op zijn plaats. 16Toen kwam dezelve Sesbazar; hij legde de fondamenten van het huis Gods, Die te Jeruzalem woont; en er is van toen af tot nu toe gebouwd, doch niet volbracht. 17Zo het dan nu den koning goeddunkt, laat er gezocht worden in het schathuis des konings aldaar, dat te Babel is, of het zij, dat een bevel van den koning Kores gegeven zij, om dit huis Gods te Jeruzalem te bouwen; en dat men des konings believen hiervan tot ons zende.
