1Men när folket såg att Mose dröjde att komma ned från berget, församlade de sig omkring Aron och sade till honom: »Upp, gör oss en gud som kan gå framför oss; ty vi veta icke vad som har vederfarits denne Mose, honom som förde oss upp ur Egyptens land.» 2Då sade Aron till dem: »Tagen guldringarna ut ur öronen på edra hustrur, edra söner och edra döttrar, och bären dem till mig. 3Då tog allt folket av sig guldringarna som de hade i öronen, och de buro dem till Aron; 4och han tog emot guldet av dem och formade det med en mejsel och gjorde därav en gjuten kalv. Och de sade: »Detta är din Gud, Israel, han som har fört dig upp ur Egyptens land.» 5När Aron såg detta, byggde han ett altare åt honom. Och Aron lät utropa och säga: »I morgon bliver en HERRENS högtid.» 6Dagen därefter stodo de bittida upp och offrade brännoffer och buro fram tackoffer, och folket satte sig ned till att äta och dricka, och därpå stodo de upp till att leka. 7Då sade HERREN till Mose: »Gå ditned, ty ditt folk, som du har fört upp ur Egyptens land, har tagit sig till, vad fördärvligt är. 8De hava redan vikit av ifrån den väg som jag bjöd dem gå; de hava gjort sig en gjuten kalv. Den hava de tillbett, åt den hava de offrat, och sagt: 'Detta är din Gud, Israel, han som har fört dig upp ur Egyptens land.» 9Och HERREN sade ytterligare till Mose: »Jag ser att detta folk är ett hårdnackat folk. 10Så låt mig nu vara, på det att min vrede må brinna mot dem, och på det att jag må förgöra dem; dig vill jag sedan göra till ett stort folk.» 11Men Mose bönföll inför HERREN, sin Gud, och sade: »HERRE, varför skulle din vrede brinna mot ditt folk, som du med stor kraft och stark hand har fört ut ur Egyptens land? 12Varför skulle egyptierna få säga: 'Till deras olycka har han fört dem ut, till att dräpa dem bland bergen och förgöra dem från jorden'? Vänd dig ifrån din vredes glöd, och ångra det onda du nu har i sinnet mot ditt folk. 13Tänk på Abraham, Isak och Israel, dina tjänare, åt vilka du med ed vid dig själv har givit det löftet: 'Jag skall göra eder säd talrik såsom stjärnorna på himmelen, och hela det land som jag har talat om skall jag giva åt eder säd, och de skola få det till evärdlig arvedel.'» 14Då ångrade HERREN det onda som han hade hotat att göra mot sitt folk. 15Och Mose vände sig om och steg ned från berget, och han hade med sig vittnesbördets två tavlor. Och på tavlornas båda sidor var skrivet både på den ena sidan och på den andra var skrivet. 16Och tavlorna voro gjorda av Gud, och skriften var Guds skrift, inristad på tavlorna. 17När Josua nu hörde huru folket skriade, sade han till Mose: »Krigsrop höres i lägret.» 18Men han svarade: »Det är varken segerrop som höres, ej heller är det ett ropande såsom efter nederlag; det är sång jag hör.» 19När sedan Mose kom närmare lägret och fick se kalven och dansen, upptändes hans vrede, och han kastade tavlorna ifrån sig och slog sönder dem nedanför berget. 20Sedan tog han kalven som de hade gjort, och brände den i eld och krossade den till stoft; detta strödde han i vattnet och gav det åt Israels barn att dricka. 21Och Mose sade till Aron: »Vad har folket gjort dig, eftersom du har kommit dem att begå en så stor synd?» 22Aron svarade: »Min herres vrede må icke upptändas; du vet själv att detta folk är ont. 23De sade till mig: 'Gör oss en gud som kan gå framför oss; ty vi veta icke vad som har vederfarits denne Mose, honom som förde oss upp ur Egyptens land.' 24Då sade jag till dem: 'Den som har guld tage det av sig'; och de gåvo det åt mig. Och jag kastade det i elden, och så kom kalven till.» 25Då nu Mose såg att folket var lössläppt, eftersom Aron, till skadeglädje för deras fiender, hade släppt dem lösa, 26ställde han sig i porten till lägret och ropade: »Var och en som hör HERREN till komme hit till mig.» Då församlade sig till honom alla Levi barn. 27Och han sade till dem: »Så säger HERREN, Israels Gud: Var och en binde sitt svärd vid sin länd. Gån så igenom lägret, fram och tillbaka, från den ena porten till den andra, Och dräpen vem I finnen, vore det också broder eller vän eller frände. 28Och Levi barn gjorde såsom Mose hade sagt; och på den dagen föllo av folket vid pass tre tusen män. 29Och Mose sade: »Eftersom I nu haven stått emot edra egna söner och bröder, mån I i dag taga handfyllning till HERRENS tjänst, för att välsignelse i dag må komma över eder.» 30Dagen därefter sade Mose till folket: »I haven begått en stor synd. Jag vill nu stiga upp till HERREN och se till, om jag kan bringa försoning för eder synd.» 31Och Mose gick tillbaka till HERREN och sade: »Ack, detta folk har begått en stor synd; de hava gjort sig en gud av guld. 32Men förlåt dem nu deras synd; varom icke, så utplåna mig ur boken som du skriver i.» 33Men HERREN svarade Mose: »Den som har syndat mot mig, honom skall jag utplåna ur min bok. 34Gå nu och för folket dit jag har sagt dig; se, min ängel skall gå framför dig. Men när min hemsökelses dag kommer, skall jag på dem hemsöka deras synd.» 35Så straffade HERREN folket, därför att de hade gjort kalven, den som Aron gjorde.
1When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.” 2Aaron said to them, “Take off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3All the people took off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. 4He received what they handed him, and fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molten calf; and they said, “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 5When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to Yahweh.” 6They rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. 7Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Go, get down; for your people, who you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves! 8They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it, and have sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’” 9Yahweh said to Moses, “I have seen these people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked people. 10Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.” 11Moses begged Yahweh his God, and said, “Yahweh, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘He brought them out for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth?’ Turn from your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against your people. 13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your seed as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your seed, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14Yahweh repented of the evil which he said he would do to his people. 15Moses turned, and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand; tablets that were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other they were written. 16The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tables. 17When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is the noise of war in the camp.” 18He said, “It isn’t the voice of those who shout for victory, neither is it the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing that I hear.” 19As soon as he came near to the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. Then Moses’ anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain. 20He took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it. 21Moses said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you have brought a great sin on them?” 22Aaron said, “Don’t let the anger of my lord grow hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23For they said to me, ‘Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’ 24I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them take it off:’ so they gave it to me; and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.” 25When Moses saw that the people had broken loose, (for Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies), 26then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on Yahweh’s side, come to me!” All the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27He said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’” 28The sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. 29Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to Yahweh, yes, every man against his son, and against his brother; that he may bestow on you a blessing this day.” 30On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.” 31Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold. 32Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written.” 33Yahweh said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. 34Now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.” 35Yahweh struck the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

Toen zeiden zij: Dit zijn uw goden, Israel! die u uit Egypteland opgevoerd hebben. 5Als Aaron dat zag, zo bouwde hij een altaar voor hetzelve; en Aaron riep uit, en zeide: Morgen zal den HEERE een feest zijn! 6En zij stonden des anderen daags vroeg op, en offerden brandoffer, en brachten dankoffer daartoe; en het volk zat neder om te eten en te drinken; daarna stonden zij op, om te spelen. 7Toen sprak de HEERE tot Mozes: Ga heen, klim af! want uw volk, dat gij uit Egypteland opgevoerd hebt, heeft het verdorven. 8En zij zijn haast afgeweken van den weg, dien Ik hun geboden had, zij hebben zich een gegoten kalf gemaakt; en zij hebben zich voor hetzelve gebogen, en hebben het offerande gedaan, en gezegd: Dit zijn uw goden, Israel, die u uit Egypteland opgevoerd hebben. 9Verder zeide de HEERE tot Mozes: Ik heb dit volk gezien, en zie, het is een hardnekkig volk! 10En nu, laat Mij toe, dat Mijn toorn tegen hen ontsteke, en hen vertere; zo zal Ik u tot een groot volk maken. 11Doch Mozes aanbad het aangezicht des HEEREN zijns Gods, en hij zeide: O HEERE! waarom zou Uw toorn ontsteken tegen Uw volk, hetwelk Gij met grote kracht, en met een sterke hand, uit Egypteland uitgevoerd hebt? 12Waarom zouden de Egyptenaars spreken, zeggende: In kwaadheid heeft Hij hen uitgevoerd, opdat Hij hen doodde op de bergen, en opdat Hij hen vernielde van den aardbodem? Keer af van de hittigheid Uws toorns, en laat het U over het kwaad Uws volks berouwen. 13Gedenk aan Abraham, aan Izak en aan Israel, Uw knechten, aan welke Gij bij Uzelven gezworen hebt, en hebt tot hen gesproken: Ik zal uw zaad vermenigvuldigen als de sterren des hemels; en dit gehele land, waarvan Ik gezegd heb, zal Ik aan ulieder zaad geven, dat zij het erfelijk bezitten in eeuwigheid. 14Toen berouwde het den HEERE over het kwaad, hetwelk Hij gesproken had Zijn volk te zullen doen. 15En Mozes wendde zich om, en klom van den berg af, met de twee tafelen der getuigenis in zijn hand; deze tafelen waren op haar beide zijden beschreven, zij waren op de ene en op de andere zijde beschreven. 16En diezelfde tafelen waren Gods werk; het geschrift was ook Gods geschrift zelf, in de tafelen gegraveerd. 17Toen nu Jozua des volks stem hoorde, als het juichte, zo zeide hij tot Mozes: Er is een krijgsgeschrei in het leger. 18Maar hij zeide: Het is geen stem des geroeps van overwinning, het is ook geen stem des geroeps van nederlaag; ik hoor een stem van zingen bij beurte. 19En het geschiedde, als hij aan het leger naderde, en het kalf, en de reien zag, dat de toorn van Mozes ontstak, en dat hij de tafelen uit zijn handen wierp, en dezelve beneden aan den berg verbrak. 20En hij nam dat kalf, dat zij gemaakt hadden, en verbrandde het in het vuur, en vermaalde het, totdat het klein werd, en strooide het op het water, en deed het den kinderen Israels drinken. 21En Mozes zeide tot Aaron: Wat heeft u dit volk gedaan, dat gij zulk een grote zonde over hetzelve gebracht hebt? 22Toen zeide Aaron: De toorn mijns heren ontsteke niet! gij kent dit volk, dat het in den boze ligt. 23Zij dan zeiden tot mij: Maak ons goden, die voor ons aangezicht gaan, want dezen Mozes, dien man, die ons uit Egypteland opgevoerd heeft, wij weten niet, wat hem geschied zij. 24Toen zeide ik tot hen: Wie goud heeft, die rukke het af, en geve het mij; en ik wierp het in het vuur, en dit kalf is er uit gekomen. 25Als Mozes zag, dat het volk ontbloot was, (want Aaron had het ontbloot tot verkleining onder degenen, die tegen hen hadden mogen opstaan), 26Zo bleef Mozes staan in de poort des legers, en zeide: Wie den HEERE toebehoort, kome tot mij! Toen verzamelden zich tot hem al de zonen van Levi. 27En hij zeide tot hen: Alzo zegt de HEERE, de God van Israel: Een ieder doe zijn zwaard aan zijn heup; gaat door en keert weder, van poort tot poort in het leger, en een iegelijk dode zijn broeder, en elk zijn vriend, en elk zijn naaste! 28En de zonen van Levi deden naar het woord van Mozes; en er vielen van het volk, op dien dag, omtrent drie duizend man. 29Want Mozes had gezegd: Vult heden uw handen den HEERE; want elk zal zijn tegen zijn zoon, en tegen zijn broeder; en dit, opdat Hij heden een zegen over ulieden geve! 30En het geschiedde des anderen daags, dat Mozes tot het volk zeide: Gijlieden hebt een grote zonde gezondigd; doch nu, ik zal tot den HEERE opklimmen; misschien zal ik een verzoening doen voor uw zonde. 31Zo keerde Mozes weder tot den HEERE, en zeide: Och, dit volk heeft een grote zonde gezondigd, dat zij zich gouden goden gemaakt hebben. 32Nu dan, indien Gij hun zonden vergeven zult! doch zo niet, zo delg mij nu uit Uw boek, hetwelk Gij geschreven hebt. 33Toen zeide de HEERE tot Mozes: Dien zou Ik uit Mijn boek delgen, die aan Mij zondigt. 34Doch ga nu heen, leid dit volk, waarheen Ik u gezegd heb; zie, Mijn Engel zal voor uw aangezicht gaan! doch ten dage Mijns bezoekens, zo zal Ik hun zonde over hen bezoeken! 35Aldus plaagde de HEERE dit volk, omdat zij dat kalf gemaakt hadden, hetwelk Aaron gemaakt had.
