1В те дни, когда управляли судьи, случился голод на земле. И пошел один человек из Вифлеема Иудейского со своею женою и двумя сыновьями своими жить на полях Моавитских. 2Имя человека того Елимелех, имя жены его Ноеминь, а имена двух сынов его Махлон и Хилеон; они были Ефрафяне из Вифлеема Иудейского. И пришли они на поля Моавитские и остались там. 3И умер Елимелех, муж Ноемини, и осталась она с двумя сыновьями своими. 4Они взяли себе жен из Моавитянок, имя одной Орфа, а имя другой Руфь, и жили там около десяти лет. 5Но потом и оба [сына ее], Махлон и Хилеон, умерли, и осталась та женщина после обоих своих сыновей и после мужа своего. 6И встала она со снохами своими и пошла обратно с полей Моавитских, ибо услышала на полях Моавитских, что Бог посетил народ Свой и дал им хлеб. 7И вышла она из того места, в котором жила, и обе снохи ее с нею. Когда они шли по дороге, возвращаясь в землю Иудейскую, 8Ноеминь сказала двум снохам своим: пойдите, возвратитесь каждая в дом матери своей; да сотворит Господь с вами милость, как вы поступали с умершими и со мною! 9да даст вам Господь, чтобы вы нашли пристанище каждая в доме своего мужа! И поцеловала их. Но они подняли вопль и плакали 10и сказали: нет, мы с тобою возвратимся к народу твоему. 11Ноеминь же сказала: возвратитесь, дочери мои; зачем вам идти со мною? Разве еще есть у меня сыновья в моем чреве, которые были бы вам мужьями? 12Возвратитесь, дочери мои, пойдите, ибо я уже стара, чтоб быть замужем. Да если б я и сказала: "есть мне еще надежда", и даже если бы я сию же ночь была с мужем и потом родила сыновей, — 13то можно ли вам ждать, пока они выросли бы? можно ли вам медлить и не выходить замуж? Нет, дочери мои, я весьма сокрушаюсь о вас, ибо рука Господня постигла меня. 14Они подняли вопль и опять стали плакать. И Орфа простилась со свекровью своею [и возвратилась к народу своему], а Руфь осталась с нею. 15[Ноеминь] сказала [Руфи]: вот, невестка твоя возвратилась к народу своему и к своим богам; возвратись и ты вслед за невесткою твоею. 16Но Руфь сказала: не принуждай меня оставить тебя и возвратиться от тебя; но куда ты пойдешь, туда и я пойду, и где ты жить будешь, там и я буду жить; народ твой будет моим народом, и твой Бог — моим Богом; 17и где ты умрешь, там и я умру и погребена буду; пусть то и то сделает мне Господь, и еще больше сделает; смерть одна разлучит меня с тобою. 18[Ноеминь,] видя, что она твердо решилась идти с нею, перестала уговаривать ее. 19И шли обе они, доколе не пришли в Вифлеем. Когда пришли они в Вифлеем, весь город пришел в движение от них, и говорили: это Ноеминь? 20Она сказала им: не называйте меня Ноеминью, а называйте меня Марою, потому что Вседержитель послал мне великую горесть; 21я вышла отсюда с достатком, а возвратил меня Господь с пустыми руками; зачем называть меня Ноеминью, когда Господь заставил меня страдать, и Вседержитель послал мне несчастье? 22И возвратилась Ноеминь, и с нею сноха ее Руфь Моавитянка, пришедшая с полей Моавитских, и пришли они в Вифлеем в начале жатвы ячменя.
1In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. 2The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there. 3Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. 4They took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years. 5Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband. 6Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread. 7She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house: Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me. 9Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept. 10They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.” 11Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons; 13would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of Yahweh has gone out against me.” 14They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth joined with her. 15She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.” 16Ruth said, “Don’t entreat me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God; 17where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me.” 18When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her. 19So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?” 20She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty; why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?” 22So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
1In de dagen, als de richters richtten, zo geschiedde het, dat er honger in het land was; daarom toog een man van Bethlehem-Juda, om als vreemdeling te verkeren in de velden Moabs, hij, en zijn huisvrouw, en zijn twee zonen. 2De naam nu dezes mans was Elimelech, en de naam zijner huisvrouw Naomi, en de naam zijner twee zonen Machlon en Chiljon, Efrathers, van Bethlehem-Juda; en zij kwamen in de velden Moabs, en bleven aldaar. 3En Elimelech, de man van Naomi, stierf; maar zij werd overgelaten met haar twee zonen. 4Die namen zich Moabietische vrouwen; de naam der ene was Orpa, en de naam der andere Ruth; en zij bleven aldaar omtrent tien jaren. 5En die twee, Machlon en Chiljon, stierven ook; alzo werd deze vrouw overgelaten na haar twee zonen en na haar man. 6Toen maakte zij zich op met haar schoondochters, en keerde weder uit de velden van Moab; want zij had gehoord in het land van Moab, dat de HEERE Zijn volk bezocht had, gevende hun brood. 7Daarom ging zij uit van de plaats, waar zij geweest was en haar twee schoondochters met haar. Als zij nu gingen op den weg, om weder te keren naar het land van Juda, 8Zo zeide Naomi tot haar twee schoondochters: Gaat heen, keert weder, een iegelijk tot het huis van haar moeder; de HEERE doe bij u weldadigheid, gelijk als gij gedaan hebt bij de doden, en bij mij. 9De HEERE geve u, dat gij ruste vindt, een iegelijk in het huis van haar man! En als zij haar kuste, hieven zij haar stem op en weenden; 10En zij zeiden tot haar: Wij zullen zekerlijk met u wederkeren tot uw volk. 11Maar Naomi zeide: Keert weder, mijn dochters! Waarom zoudt gij met mij gaan? Heb ik nog zonen in mijn lichaam, dat zij u tot mannen zouden zijn? 12Keert weder, mijn dochters! Gaat heen; want ik ben te oud om een man te hebben. Wanneer ik al zeide: Ik heb hoop, of ik ook in dezen nacht een man had, ja, ook zonen baarde; 13Zoudt gij daarnaar wachten, totdat zij zouden groot geworden zijn; zoudt gij daarnaar opgehouden worden, om geen man te nemen? Niet, mijn dochters! Want het is mij veel bitterder dan u; maar de hand des HEEREN is tegen mij uitgegaan. 14Toen hieven zij haar stem op, en weenden wederom; en Orpa kuste haar schoonmoeder, maar Ruth kleefde haar aan. 15Daarom zeide zij: Zie, uw zwagerin is wedergekeerd tot haar volk en tot haar goden; keer gij ook weder, uw zwagerin na. 16Maar Ruth zeide: Val mij niet tegen, dat ik u zou verlaten, om van achter u weder te keren; want waar gij zult heengaan, zal ik ook heengaan, en waar gij zult vernachten, zal ik vernachten; uw volk is mijn volk, en uw God mijn God. 17Waar gij zult sterven, zal ik sterven, en aldaar zal ik begraven worden; alzo doe mij de HEERE en alzo doe Hij daartoe, zo niet de dood alleen zal scheiding maken tussen mij en tussen u! 18Als zij nu zag, dat zij vastelijk voorgenomen had met haar te gaan, zo hield zij op tot haar te spreken. 19Alzo gingen die beiden, totdat zij te Bethlehem inkwamen; en het geschiedde, als zij te Bethlehem inkwamen, dat de ganse stad over haar beroerd werd, en zij zeiden: Is dit Naomi? 20Maar zij zeide tot henlieden: Noemt mij niet Naomi, noemt mij Mara; want de Almachtige heeft mij grote bitterheid aangedaan. 21Vol toog ik weg, maar ledig heeft mij de HEERE doen wederkeren; waarom zoudt gij mij Naomi noemen, daar de HEERE tegen mij getuigt, en de Almachtige mij kwaad aangedaan heeft? 22Alzo kwam Naomi weder, en Ruth, de Moabietische, haar schoondochter, met haar, die uit de velden Moabs wederkwam; en zij kwamen te Bethlehem in het begin van de gersteoogst.
