И умер Гофониил, сын Кеназа. 12Сыны Израилевы опять стали делать злое пред очами Господа, и укрепил Господь Еглона, царя Моавитского, против Израильтян, за то, что они делали злое пред очами Господа. 13Он собрал к себе [всех] Аммонитян и Амаликитян, и пошел и поразил Израиля, и овладели они городом Пальм. 14И служили сыны Израилевы Еглону, царю Моавитскому, восемнадцать лет. 15Тогда возопили сыны Израилевы к Господу, и Господь воздвигнул им спасителя Аода, сына Геры, сына Иеминиева, который был левша. И послали сыны Израилевы с ним дары Еглону, царю Моавитскому. 16Аод сделал себе меч с двумя остриями, длиною в локоть, и припоясал его под плащом своим к правому бедру, 17[и пришел,] и поднес дары Еглону, царю Моавитскому; Еглон же был человек очень тучный. 18Когда поднес Аод все дары и проводил людей, принесших дары, 19то сам возвратился от истуканов, которые в Галгале, и сказал: у меня есть тайное слово до тебя, царь. Он сказал: тише! И вышли от него все стоявшие при нем. 20Аод вошел к нему: он сидел в прохладной горнице, которая была у него отдельно. И сказал Аод: у меня есть до тебя, [царь,] слово Божие. [Еглон] встал со стула [пред ним]. 21[Когда он встал,] Аод простер левую руку свою и взял меч с правого бедра своего и вонзил его в чрево его, 22так что вошла за острием и рукоять, и тук закрыл острие, ибо Аод не вынул меча из чрева его, и он прошел в задние части. 23И вышел Аод в преддверие, и затворил за собою двери горницы, и замкнул. 24Когда он вышел, рабы Еглона пришли и видят, вот, двери горницы замкнуты, и говорят: верно он для нужды в прохладной комнате. 25Ждали довольно долго, но видя, что никто не отпирает дверей горницы, взяли ключ и отперли, и вот, господин их лежит на земле мертвый. 26Пока они недоумевали, Аод между тем ушел, [и никто о нем не думал,] прошел мимо истуканов и спасся в Сеираф. 27Придя же [в землю Израилеву, Аод] вострубил трубою на горе Ефремовой, и сошли с ним сыны Израилевы с горы, и он шел впереди их. 28И сказал им: идите за мною, ибо предал Господь [Бог] врагов ваших Моавитян в руки ваши. И пошли за ним, и перехватили переправу через Иордан к Моаву, и не давали никому переходить. 29И побили в то время Моавитян около десяти тысяч человек, всё здоровых и сильных, и никто не убежал. 30Так смирились в тот день Моавитяне пред Израилем, и покоилась земля восемьдесят лет. [И был Аод судьею их до самой смерти.] 31После него был Самегар, сын Анафов, который шестьсот человек Филистимлян побил воловьим рожном; и он также спас Израиля.
1Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing of it: 3the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the commandments of Yahweh, which he commanded their fathers by Moses. 5The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: 6and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. 7The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth. 8Therefore Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years. 9When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10The Spirit of Yahweh came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim. 11The land had rest forty years. Othniel the son of Kenaz died. 12The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh. 13He gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees. 14The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised them up a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh. 17He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man. 18When he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people who bore the tribute. 19But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret errand to you, king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him went out from him. 20Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat. 21Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body: 22and the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind. 23Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them. 24Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.” 25They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. 26Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirah. 27When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them. 28He said to them, “Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over. 29They struck of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man. 30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. The land had rest eighty years. 31After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also saved Israel.

En de kinderen Israels zonden door zijn hand een geschenk aan Eglon, den koning der Moabieten. 16En Ehud maakte zich een zwaard, dat twee scherpten had, welks lengte een el was; en hij gordde dat onder zijn klederen, aan zijn rechterheup. 17En hij bracht aan Eglon, den koning der Moabieten, dat geschenk; Eglon nu was een zeer vet man. 18En het geschiedde, als hij geeindigd had het geschenk te leveren, zo geleidde hij het volk, die het geschenk gedragen hadden; 19Maar hijzelf keerde wederom van de gesneden beelden, die bij Gilgal waren, en zeide: Ik heb een heimelijke zaak aan u, o koning! dewelke zeide: Zwijg! En allen, die om hem stonden, gingen van hem uit. 20En Ehud kwam tot hem in, daar hij was zittende in een koele opperzaal, die hij voor zich alleen had; zo zeide Ehud: Ik heb een woord Gods aan u. Toen stond hij op van den stoel. 21Ehud dan reikte zijn linkerhand uit, en nam het zwaard van zijn rechterheup, en stak het in zijn buik; 22Dat ook het hecht achter het lemmer inging, en het vet om het lemmer toesloot (want hij trok het zwaard niet uit zijn buik), en de drek uitging. 23Toen ging Ehud uit van de voorzaal, en sloot de deuren der opperzaal voor zich toe, en deed ze in het slot. 24Als hij uitgegaan was, zo kwamen zijn knechten, en zagen toe, en ziet, de deuren der opperzaal waren in het slot gedaan; zo zeiden zij: Zeker, hij bedekt zijn voeten in de verkoelkamer. 25Als zij nu tot schamens toe gebeid hadden, ziet, zo opende hij de deuren der opperzaal niet. Toen namen zij den sleutel en deden open; en ziet, hunlieder heer lag ter aarde dood. 26En Ehud ontkwam, terwijl zij vertoefden; want hij ging voorbij de gesneden beelden, en ontkwam naar Sehirath. 27En het geschiedde, als hij aankwam, zo blies hij met de bazuin op het gebergte van Efraim; en de kinderen Israels togen met hem af van het gebergte, en hij zelf voor hun aangezicht heen. 28En hij zeide tot hen: Volgt mij na; want de HEERE heeft uw vijanden, de Moabieten, in ulieder hand gegeven. En zij togen af, hem na, en namen de veren van de Jordaan in naar Moab, en lieten niemand overgaan. 29En zij sloegen de Moabieten te dier tijd, omtrent tien duizend man, allen vette en allen strijdbare mannen, dat er niet een man ontkwam. 30Alzo werd Moab te dien dage onder Israels hand ten ondergebracht; en het land was stil tachtig jaren. 31Na hem nu was Samgar, een zoon van Anath, die sloeg de Filistijnen, zeshonderd man, met een ossenstok; alzo verloste hij ook Israel.
