1Frères, le vœu de mon cœur et ma prière à Dieu pour eux, c’est qu’ils soient sauvés. 2Je leur rends le témoignage qu’ils ont du zèle pour Dieu, mais sans intelligence : 3ne connaissant pas la justice de Dieu, et cherchant à établir leur propre justice, ils ne se sont pas soumis à la justice de Dieu ; 4car Christ est la fin de la loi, pour la justification de tous ceux qui croient. 5En effet, Moïse définit ainsi la justice qui vient de la loi : L’homme qui mettra ces choses en pratique vivra par elles. 6Mais voici comment parle la justice qui vient de la foi : Ne dis pas en ton cœur : Qui montera au ciel ? c’est en faire descendre Christ ; 7ou : Qui descendra dans l’abîme ? c’est faire remonter Christ d’entre les morts. 8Que dit-elle donc ? La parole est près de toi, dans ta bouche et dans ton cœur. Or, c’est la parole de la foi, que nous prêchons. 9Si tu confesses de ta bouche le Seigneur Jésus, et si tu crois dans ton cœur que Dieu l’a ressuscité des morts, tu seras sauvé. 10Car c’est en croyant du cœur qu’on parvient à la justice, et c’est en confessant de la bouche qu’on parvient au salut, selon ce que dit l’Écriture : 11Quiconque croit en lui ne sera point confus. 12Il n’y a aucune différence, en effet, entre le Juif et le Grec, puisqu’ils ont tous un même Seigneur, qui est riche pour tous ceux qui l’invoquent. 13Car quiconque invoquera le nom du Seigneur sera sauvé. 14Comment donc invoqueront-ils celui en qui ils n’ont pas cru ? Et comment croiront-ils en celui dont ils n’ont pas entendu parler ? Et comment en entendront-ils parler, s’il n’y a personne qui prêche ? 15Et comment y aura-t-il des prédicateurs, s’ils ne sont pas envoyés ? selon qu’il est écrit : Qu’ils sont beaux Les pieds de ceux qui annoncent la paix, De ceux qui annoncent de bonnes nouvelles ! 16Mais tous n’ont pas obéi à la bonne nouvelle. Aussi Ésaïe dit-il : Seigneur, Qui a cru à notre prédication ? 17Ainsi la foi vient de ce qu’on entend, et ce qu’on entend vient de la parole de Christ. 18Mais je dis : N’ont-ils pas entendu ? Au contraire ! Leur voix est allée par toute la terre, Et leurs paroles jusqu’aux extrémités du monde. 19Mais je dis : Israël ne l’a-t-il pas su ? Moïse le premier dit : J’exciterai votre jalousie par ce qui n’est point une nation, je provoquerai votre colère par une nation sans intelligence. 20Et Ésaïe pousse la hardiesse jusqu’à dire : J’ai été trouvé par ceux qui ne me cherchaient pas, Je me suis manifesté à ceux qui ne me demandaient pas. 21Mais au sujet d’Israël, il dit : J’ai tendu mes mains tout le jour vers un peuple rebelle Et contredisant.
1Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved. 2For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4For Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5For Moses writes about the righteousness of the law, “The one who does them will live by them.” 6But the righteousness which is of faith says this, “Don’t say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down); 7or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)” 8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your heart”; that is, the word of faith, which we preach: 9that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.” 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. 13For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher? 15And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” 16But they didn’t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18But I say, didn’t they hear? Yes, most certainly, “Their sound went out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” 19But I ask, didn’t Israel know? First Moses says, “I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation, with a nation void of understanding I will make you angry.” 20Isaiah is very bold, and says, “I was found by those who didn’t seek me. I was revealed to those who didn’t ask for me.” 21But as to Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”
1Broeders, de toegenegenheid mijns harten, en het gebed, dat ik tot God voor Israel doe, is tot hun zaligheid. 2Want ik geef hun getuigenis, dat zij een ijver tot God hebben, maar niet met verstand. 3Want alzo zij de rechtvaardigheid Gods niet kennen, en hun eigen gerechtigheid zoeken op te richten, zo zijn zij der rechtvaardigheid Gods niet onderworpen. 4Want het einde der wet is Christus, tot rechtvaardigheid een iegelijk, die gelooft. 5Want Mozes beschrijft de rechtvaardigheid, die uit de wet is, zeggende: De mens, die deze dingen doet, zal door dezelve leven. 6Maar de rechtvaardigheid, die uit het geloof is, spreekt aldus: Zeg niet in uw hart: Wie zal in den hemel opklimmen? Hetzelve is Christus van boven afbrengen. 7Of, wie zal in den afgrond nederdalen? Hetzelve is Christus uit de doden opbrengen. 8Maar wat zegt zij? Nabij u is het Woord, in uw mond en in uw hart. Dit is het Woord des geloofs, hetwelk wij prediken. 9Namelijk, indien gij met uw mond zult belijden den Heere Jezus, en met uw hart geloven, dat God Hem uit de doden opgewekt heeft, zo zult gij zalig worden. 10Want met het hart gelooft men ter rechtvaardigheid en met den mond belijdt men ter zaligheid. 11Want de Schrift zegt: Een iegelijk, die in Hem gelooft, die zal niet beschaamd worden. 12Want er is geen onderscheid, noch van Jood noch van Griek; want eenzelfde is Heere van allen, rijk zijnde over allen, die Hem aanroepen. 13Want een iegelijk, die den Naam des Heeren zal aanroepen, zal zalig worden. 14Hoe zullen zij dan Hem aanroepen, in Welken zij niet geloofd hebben? En hoe zullen zij in Hem geloven, van Welken zij niet gehoord hebben? En hoe zullen zij horen, zonder die hun predikt? 15En hoe zullen zij prediken, indien zij niet gezonden worden? Gelijk geschreven is: Hoe liefelijk zijn de voeten dergenen, die vrede verkondigen, dergenen, die het goede verkondigen! 16Doch zij zijn niet allen het Evangelie gehoorzaam geweest; want Jesaja zegt: Heere, wie heeft onze prediking geloofd? 17Zo is dan het geloof uit het gehoor, en het gehoor door het Woord Gods. 18Maar ik zeg: Hebben zij het niet gehoord? Ja toch, hun geluid is over de gehele aarde uitgegaan, en hun woorden tot de einden der wereld. 19Maar ik zeg: Heeft Israel het niet verstaan? Mozes zegt eerst: Ik zal ulieden tot jaloersheid verwekken door degenen, die geen volk zijn; door een onverstandig volk zal ik u tot toorn verwekken. 20En Jesaja verstout zich, en zegt: Ik ben gevonden van degenen, die Mij niet zochten; Ik ben openbaar geworden dengenen, die naar Mij niet vraagden. 21Maar tegen Israel zegt Hij: Den gehelen dag heb Ik Mijn handen uitgestrekt tot een ongehoorzaam en tegensprekend volk.
