1Λέγω λοιπόν, Μήπως απέρριψεν ο Θεός τον λαόν αυτού; Μη γένοιτο· διότι και εγώ Ισραηλίτης είμαι, εκ σπέρματος Αβραάμ, εκ φυλής Βενιαμίν. 2Δεν απέρριψεν ο Θεός τον λαόν αυτού, τον οποίον προεγνώρισεν. Η δεν εξεύρετε τι λέγει η γραφή περί του Ηλία; πως ομιλεί προς τον Θεόν κατά του Ισραήλ, λέγων· 3Κύριε, τους προφήτας σου εθανάτωσαν και τα θυσιαστήριά σου κατέσκαψαν, και εγώ εναπελείφθην μόνος, και ζητούσι την ψυχήν μου. 4Αλλά τι αποκρίνεται προς αυτόν ο Θεός; Αφήκα εις εμαυτόν επτά χιλιάδας ανδρών, οίτινες δεν έκλιναν γόνυ εις τον Βάαλ. 5Ούτω λοιπόν και επί του παρόντος καιρού απέμεινε κατάλοιπόν τι κατ' εκλογήν χάριτος. 6Εάν δε κατά χάριν, δεν είναι πλέον εξ έργων· επειδή τότε η χάρις δεν γίνεται πλέον χάρις. Εάν δε εξ έργων, δεν είναι πλέον χάρις· επειδή το έργον δεν είναι πλέον έργον. 7Τι λοιπόν; Ο Ισραήλ δεν επέτυχεν εκείνο το οποίον ζητεί, οι εκλεκτοί όμως επέτυχον· οι δε λοιποί ετυφλώθησαν, 8καθώς είναι γεγραμμένον· Έδωκεν εις αυτούς ο Θεός πνεύμα νυσταγμού, οφθαλμούς διά να μη βλέπωσι και ώτα διά να μη ακούωσιν, έως της σήμερον ημέρας. 9Και ο Δαβίδ λέγει· Ας γείνη η τράπεζα αυτών εις παγίδα και εις βρόχον και εις σκάνδαλον και εις ανταπόδομα εις αυτούς· 10ας σκοτισθώσιν οι οφθαλμοί αυτών διά να μη βλέπωσι, και τον νώτον αυτών διαπαντός κύρτωσον. 11Λέγω λοιπόν, Μήπως έπταισαν διά να πέσωσι; Μη γένοιτο· αλλά διά της πτώσεως αυτών έγεινεν η σωτηρία εις τα έθνη, διά να κινήση αυτούς εις ζηλοτυπίαν. 12Και εάν η πτώσις αυτών ήναι πλούτος του κόσμου και ελάττωσις αυτών πλούτος των εθνών, πόσω μάλλον το πλήρωμα αυτών; 13Διότι προς εσάς τα έθνη λέγω, Εφ' όσον μεν είμαι εγώ απόστολος των εθνών, την διακονίαν μου δοξάζω, 14ίσως κινήσω εις ζηλοτυπίαν αυτούς, οίτινες είναι σαρξ μου και σώσω τινάς εξ αυτών. 15Διότι εάν η αποβολή αυτών ήναι φιλίωσις του κόσμου, τι θέλει είσθαι η πρόσληψις αυτών ειμή ζωή εκ νεκρών; 16Και εάν η ζύμη ήναι αγία, είναι και το φύραμα· και εάν η ρίζα ήναι αγία, είναι και οι κλάδοι. 17Αλλ' εάν τινές των κλάδων απεκόπησαν, συ δε αγριελαία ούσα ενεκεντρίσθης μεταξύ αυτών και έγεινες συγκοινωνός της ρίζης και της παχύτητος της ελαίας, 18μη κατακαυχάσαι εναντίον των κλάδων· εάν δε κατακαυχάσαι, συ δεν βαστάζεις την ρίζαν, αλλ' η ρίζα σε. 19Θέλεις ειπεί λοιπόν· Απεκόπησαν οι κλάδοι, διά να εγκεντρισθώ εγώ. 20Καλώς· διά την απιστίαν απεκόπησαν, συ δε διά της πίστεως ίστασαι· μη υψηλοφρόνει, αλλά φοβού· 21διότι εάν ο Θεός δεν εφείσθη τους φυσικούς κλάδους, πρόσεχε μήπως δεν φεισθή μηδέ σε. 22Ιδέ λοιπόν την χρηστότητα και την αυστηρότητα του Θεού, επί μεν τους πεσόντας την αυστηρότητα, επί σε δε την χρηστότητα, εάν επιμείνης εις την χρηστότητα· διότι άλλως και συ θέλεις αποκοπή. 23Και εκείνοι δε, εάν δεν επιμείνωσιν εις την απιστίαν, θέλουσιν εγκεντρισθή· διότι δυνατός είναι ο Θεός πάλιν να εγκεντρίση αυτούς. 24Επειδή εάν συ απεκόπης από της φυσικής αγριελαίας και παρά φύσιν ενεκεντρίσθης εις καλλιελαίαν, πόσω μάλλον ούτοι οι φυσικοί θέλουσιν εγκεντρισθή εις την ιδίαν αυτών ελαίαν. 25Διότι δεν θέλω να αγνοήτε, αδελφοί, το μυστήριον τούτο, διά να μη υψηλοφρονήτε, ότι τύφλωσις κατά μέρος έγεινεν εις τον Ισραήλ, εωσού εισέλθη το πλήρωμα των εθνών, 26και ούτω πας ο Ισραήλ θέλει σωθή, καθώς είναι γεγραμμένον· Θέλει ελθεί εκ Σιών ο λυτρωτής και θέλει αποστρέψει τας ασεβείας από του Ιακώβ· 27Και αύτη είναι η παρ' εμού διαθήκη προς αυτούς, Όταν αφαιρέσω τας αμαρτίας αυτών. 28Κατά μεν το ευαγγέλιον, είναι εχθροί διά σας, κατά δε την εκλογήν αγαπητοί διά τους πατέρας. 29Διότι ανεπίδεκτα μεταμελείας είναι τα χαρίσματα και η πρόσκλησις του Θεού. 30Διότι καθώς και σεις ηπειθήσατέ ποτέ εις τον Θεόν, τώρα όμως ηλεήθητε εν τη απειθεία τούτων, 31ούτω και ούτοι ηπείθησαν τώρα εν τω υμετέρω ελέει, διά να ελεηθώσι και αυτοί· 32διότι ο Θεός συνέκλεισε τους πάντας εις την απείθειαν, διά να ελεήση τους πάντας. 33Ω βάθος πλούτου και σοφίας και γνώσεως Θεού. Πόσον ανεξερεύνητοι είναι αι κρίσεις αυτού και ανεξιχνίαστοι αι οδοί αυτού. 34Διότι τις εγνώρισε τον νούν του Κυρίου; ή τις έγεινε σύμβουλος αυτού; 35ή τις έδωκε τι πρώτος εις αυτόν, διά να γείνη εις αυτόν ανταπόδοσις; 36Επειδή εξ αυτού και δι' αυτού και εις αυτόν είναι τα πάντα. Αυτώ, η δόξα εις τους αιώνας. Αμήν.
1I ask then, did God reject his people? May it never be! For I also am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God didn’t reject his people, which he foreknew. Or don’t you know what the Scripture says about Elijah? How he pleads with God against Israel: 3“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have broken down your altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.” 4But how does God answer him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work. 7What then? That which Israel seeks for, that he didn’t obtain, but the chosen ones obtained it, and the rest were hardened. 8According as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, to this very day.” 9David says, “Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, a stumbling block, and a retribution to them. 10Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see. Bow down their back always.” 11I ask then, did they stumble that they might fall? May it never be! But by their fall salvation has come to the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy. 12Now if their fall is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fullness? 13For I speak to you who are Gentiles. Since then as I am an apostle to Gentiles, I glorify my ministry; 14if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh, and may save some of them. 15For if the rejection of them is the reconciling of the world, what would their acceptance be, but life from the dead? 16If the first fruit is holy, so is the lump. If the root is holy, so are the branches. 17But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them, and became partaker with them of the root and of the richness of the olive tree; 18don’t boast over the branches. But if you boast, it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you. 19You will say then, “Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.” 20True; by their unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by your faith. Don’t be conceited, but fear; 21for if God didn’t spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22See then the goodness and severity of God. Toward those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness; otherwise you also will be cut off. 23They also, if they don’t continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24For if you were cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, how much more will these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? 25For I don’t desire you to be ignorant, brothers, of this mystery, so that you won’t be wise in your own conceits, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, 26and so all Israel will be saved. Even as it is written, “There will come out of Zion the Deliverer, and he will turn away ungodliness from Jacob. 27This is my covenant to them, when I will take away their sins.” 28Concerning the Good News, they are enemies for your sake. But concerning the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sake. 29For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30For as you in time past were disobedient to God, but now have obtained mercy by their disobedience, 31even so these also have now been disobedient, that by the mercy shown to you they may also obtain mercy. 32For God has shut up all to disobedience, that he might have mercy on all. 33Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! 34“For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” 35“Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?” 36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.

Dat zij verre; want ik ben ook een Israeliet, uit het zaad Abrahams, van den stam Benjamin. 2God heeft Zijn volk niet verstoten, hetwelk Hij te voren gekend heeft. Of weet gij niet, wat de Schrift zegt van Elia, hoe hij God aanspreekt tegen Israel, zeggende: 3Heere! zij hebben Uw profeten gedood, en Uw altaren omgeworpen; en ik ben alleen overgebleven en zij zoeken mijn ziel. 4Maar wat zegt tot hem het Goddelijk antwoord? Ik heb Mijzelven nog zeven duizend mannen overgelaten, die de knie voor het beeld van Baal niet gebogen hebben. 5Alzo is er dan ook in dezen tegenwoordigen tijd een overblijfsel geworden, naar de verkiezing der genade. 6En indien het door genade is, zo is het niet meer uit de werken; anderszins is de genade geen genade meer; en indien het is uit de werken, zo is het geen genade meer; anderszins is het werk geen werk meer. 7Wat dan? Hetgeen Israel zoekt, dat heeft het niet verkregen; maar de uitverkorenen hebben het verkregen, en de anderen zijn verhard geworden. 8(Gelijk geschreven is: God heeft hun gegeven een geest des diepen slaaps; ogen om niet te zien, en oren om niet te horen) tot op den huidigen dag. 9En David zegt: Hun tafel worde tot een strik, en tot een val, en tot een aanstoot, en tot een vergelding voor hen. 10Dat hun ogen verduisterd worden, om niet te zien; en verkrom hun rug allen tijd. 11Zo zeg ik dan: Hebben zij gestruikeld, opdat zij vallen zouden? Dat zij verre; maar door hun val is de zaligheid den heidenen geworden, om hen tot jaloersheid te verwekken. 12En indien hun val de rijkdom is der wereld, en hun vermindering de rijkdom der heidenen, hoeveel te meer hun volheid! 13Want ik spreek tot u, heidenen, voor zoveel ik der heidenen apostel ben; ik maak mijn bediening heerlijk; 14Of ik enigszins mijn vlees tot jaloersheid verwekken, en enigen uit hen behouden mocht. 15Want indien hun verwerping de verzoening is der wereld, wat zal de aanneming wezen, anders dan het leven uit de doden? 16En indien de eerstelingen heilig zijn, zo is ook het deeg heilig, en indien de wortel heilig is, zo zijn ook de takken heilig. 17En zo enige der takken afgebroken zijn, en gij, een wilde olijfboom zijnde, in derzelver plaats zijt ingeent, en des wortels en der vettigheid des olijfbooms mede deelachtig zijt geworden, 18Zo roem niet tegen de takken; en indien gij daartegen roemt, gij draagt den wortel niet, maar de wortel u. 19Gij zult dan zeggen: De takken zijn afgebroken, opdat ik zou ingeent worden. 20Het is wel; zij zijn door ongeloof afgebroken, en gij staat door het geloof. Zijt niet hooggevoelende, maar vrees. 21Want is het, dat God de natuurlijke takken niet gespaard heeft, zie toe, dat Hij ook mogelijk u niet spare. 22Zie dan de goedertierenheid en de strengheid van God; de strengheid wel over degenen, die gevallen zijn, maar de goedertierenheid over u, indien gij in de goedertierenheid blijft; anderszins zult ook gij afgehouwen worden. 23Maar ook zij, indien zij in het ongeloof niet blijven, zullen ingeent worden; want God is machtig om dezelve weder in te enten. 24Want indien gij afgehouwen zijt uit den olijfboom, die van nature wild was, en tegen nature in den goeden olijfboom ingeent; hoeveel te meer zullen deze, die natuurlijke takken zijn, in hun eigen olijfboom geent worden? 25Want ik wil niet, broeders, dat u deze verborgenheid onbekend zij (opdat gij niet wijs zijt, bij uzelven), dat de verharding voor een deel over Israel gekomen is, totdat de volheid der heidenen zal ingegaan zijn. 26En alzo zal geheel Israel zalig worden; gelijk geschreven is: De Verlosser zal uit Sion komen en zal de goddeloosheden afwenden van Jakob. 27En dit is hun een verbond van Mij, als Ik hun zonden zal wegnemen. 28Zo zijn zij wel vijanden aangaande het Evangelie, om uwentwil, maar aangaande de verkiezing zijn zij beminden, om der vaderen wil; 29Want de genadegiften en de roeping Gods zijn onberouwelijk. 30Want gelijkerwijs ook gijlieden eertijds Gode ongehoorzaam geweest zijt, maar nu barmhartigheid verkregen hebt door dezer ongehoorzaamheid; 31Alzo zijn ook dezen nu ongehoorzaam geweest, opdat ook zij door uw barmhartigheid zouden barmhartigheid verkrijgen. 32Want God heeft hen allen onder de ongehoorzaamheid besloten, opdat Hij hun allen zou barmhartig zijn. 33O diepte des rijkdoms, beide der wijsheid en der kennis Gods, hoe ondoorzoekelijk zijn Zijn oordelen, en onnaspeurlijk Zijn wegen! 34Want wie heeft den zin des Heeren gekend? Of wie is Zijn raadsman geweest? 35Of wie heeft Hem eerst gegeven, en het zal hem wedervergolden worden? 36Want uit Hem, en door Hem, en tot Hem zijn alle dingen. Hem zij de heerlijkheid in der eeuwigheid. Amen.
