1Και ιδού, ήλθεν άνθρωπος του Θεού εξ Ιούδα εις Βαιθήλ με λόγον του Κυρίου· ο δε Ιεροβοάμ ίστατο επί του θυσιαστηρίου, διά να θυμιάση. 2Και εφώνησε προς το θυσιαστήριον με λόγον του Κυρίου, και είπε, Θυσιαστήριον, θυσιαστήριον, ούτω λέγει Κύριος· Ιδού, υιός θέλει γεννηθή εις τον οίκον του Δαβίδ, Ιωσίας το όνομα αυτού, και θέλει θυσιάσει επί σε τους ιερείς των υψηλών τόπων, τους θυμιάζοντας επί σε, και οστά ανθρώπων θέλουσι καυθή επί σε. 3Και έδωκε σημείον την αυτήν ημέραν, λέγων, Τούτο είναι το σημείον, το οποίον ελάλησεν ο Κύριος· Ιδού, το θυσιαστήριον θέλει διασχισθή, και η στάκτη η επ' αυτού θέλει εκχυθή. 4Και ότε ήκουσεν ο βασιλεύς Ιεροβοάμ τον λόγον του ανθρώπου του Θεού, τον οποίον εφώνησε προς το θυσιαστήριον εν Βαιθήλ, εξέτεινε την χείρα αυτού από του θυσιαστηρίου, λέγων, Συλλάβετε αυτόν. Και εξηράνθη η χειρ αυτού, την οποίαν εξέτεινεν επ' αυτόν, ώστε δεν ηδυνήθη να επιστρέψη αυτήν προς εαυτόν. 5Και διεσχίσθη το θυσιαστήριον και εξεχύθη η στάκτη από του θυσιαστηρίου, κατά το σημείον το οποίον έδωκεν ο άνθρωπος του Θεού διά του λόγου του Κυρίου. 6Και απεκρίθη ο βασιλεύς και είπε προς τον άνθρωπον του Θεού, Δεήθητι, παρακαλώ, Κυρίου του Θεού σου και προσευχήθητι υπέρ εμού, διά να επιστρέψη η χειρ μου προς εμέ. Και εδεήθη ο άνθρωπος του Θεού προς τον Κύριον, και επέστρεψεν η χειρ του βασιλέως προς αυτόν και αποκατεστάθη ως το πρότερον. 7Και είπεν ο βασιλεύς προς τον άνθρωπον του Θεού, Είσελθε μετ' εμού εις τον οίκον και λάβε τροφήν, και θέλω σοι δώσει δώρα. 8Αλλ' ο άνθρωπος του Θεού είπε προς τον βασιλέα, Το ήμισυ του οίκου σου αν μοι δώσης, δεν θέλω εισέλθει μετά σού· ουδέ θέλω φάγει άρτον ουδέ θέλω πίει ύδωρ εν τω τόπω τούτω· 9διότι ούτως είναι προστεταγμένον εις εμέ διά του λόγου του Κυρίου, λέγοντος, Μη φάγης άρτον και μη πίης ύδωρ και μη επιστρέψης διά της οδού, διά της οποίας ήλθες. 10Και ανεχώρησε δι' άλλης οδού και δεν επέστρεψε διά της οδού, διά της οποίας ήλθεν εις Βαιθήλ. 11Κατώκει δε εν Βαιθήλ γέρων τις προφήτης· και ήλθον οι υιοί αυτού και διηγήθησαν προς αυτόν πάντα τα έργα, τα οποία έκαμεν ο άνθρωπος του Θεού την ημέραν εκείνην εν Βαιθήλ· διηγήθησαν δε προς τον πατέρα αυτών και τους λόγους, τους οποίους ελάλησε προς τον βασιλέα. 12Και είπε προς αυτούς ο πατήρ αυτών, Διά τίνος οδού ανεχώρησεν; είχον δε ιδεί οι υιοί αυτού διά τίνος οδού ανεχώρησεν ο άνθρωπος του Θεού ο ελθών εξ Ιούδα. 13Και είπε προς τους υιούς αυτού, Ετοιμάσατέ μοι την όνον. Και ητοίμασαν εις αυτόν την όνον· και εκάθησεν επ' αυτήν, 14και υπήγε κατόπιν του ανθρώπου του Θεού και εύρηκεν αυτόν καθήμενον υπό δρύν· και είπε προς αυτόν, συ είσαι ο άνθρωπος του Θεού ο ελθών εξ Ιούδα; Ο δε είπεν, Εγώ. 15Και είπε προς αυτόν, Ελθέ μετ' εμού εις την οικίαν και φάγε άρτον. 16Ο δε είπε, Δεν δύναμαι να επιστρέψω μετά σου ουδέ να έλθω μετά σού· ουδέ θέλω φάγει άρτον ουδέ θέλω πίει ύδωρ μετά σου εν τω τόπω τούτω· 17διότι ελαλήθη προς εμέ διά του λόγου του Κυρίου, Μη φάγης άρτον μηδέ πίης ύδωρ εκεί, μηδέ επιστρέψης υπάγων διά της οδού διά της οποίας ήλθες. 18Είπε δε προς αυτόν, Και εγώ προφήτης είμαι, καθώς σύ· και άγγελος ελάλησε προς εμέ διά του λόγου του Κυρίου, λέγων, Επίστρεψον αυτόν μετά σου εις την οικίαν σου, διά να φάγη άρτον και να πίη ύδωρ. Εψεύσθη δε προς αυτόν. 19Και επέστρεψε μετ' αυτού και έφαγεν άρτον εν τω οίκω αυτού και έπιεν ύδωρ. 20Και ενώ εκάθηντο εις την τράπεζαν, ήλθεν ο λόγος του Κυρίου προς τον προφήτην τον επιστρέψαντα αυτόν· 21και εφώνησε προς τον άνθρωπον του Θεού τον ελθόντα εξ Ιούδα, λέγων, Ούτω λέγει Κύριος. Επειδή παρήκουσας της φωνής του Κυρίου και δεν εφύλαξας την εντολήν, την οποίαν Κύριος ο Θεός σου προσέταξεν εις σε, 22αλλ' επέστρεψας και έφαγες άρτον και έπιες ύδωρ εν τω τόπω, περί του οποίου είπε προς σε, Μη φάγης άρτον μηδέ πίης ύδωρ· το σώμα σου δεν θέλει εισέλθει εις τον τάφον των πατέρων σου. 23Και αφού έφαγεν άρτον και αφού έπιεν, ητοίμασεν εκείνος την όνον εις αυτόν, εις τον προφήτην τον οποίον επέστρεψε. 24Και ανεχώρησεν· εύρε δε αυτόν λέων καθ' οδόν και εθανάτωσεν αυτόν· και το σώμα αυτού ήτο ερριμμένον εν τη οδώ· η δε όνος ίστατο πλησίον αυτού και ο λέων ίστατο πλησίον του σώματος. 25Και ιδού, άνδρες διαβαίνοντες είδον το σώμα ερριμμένον εν τη οδώ και τον λέοντα ιστάμενον πλησίον του σώματος· και ελθόντες απήγγειλαν τούτο εν τη πόλει, όπου κατώκει ο προφήτης ο γέρων. 26Και ότε ήκουσεν ο προφήτης ο επιστρέψας αυτόν εκ της οδού, είπεν, Ούτος είναι ο άνθρωπος του Θεού, όστις παρήκουσε της φωνής του Κυρίου· διά τούτο παρέδωκεν αυτόν ο Κύριος εις τον λέοντα, και διεσπάραξεν αυτόν και εθανάτωσεν αυτόν, κατά τον λόγον του Κυρίου, τον οποίον ελάλησε προς αυτόν. 27Και ελάλησε προς τους υιούς αυτού, λέγων, Στρώσατε εις εμέ την όνον. Και έστρωσαν. 28Και υπήγε και εύρηκε το σώμα αυτού ερριμμένον εν τη οδώ, και την όνον και τον λέοντα ισταμένους πλησίον του σώματος· ο λέων δεν έφαγε το σώμα ουδέ διεσπάραξε την όνον. 29Και εσήκωσεν ο προφήτης το σώμα του ανθρώπου του Θεού, και επέθεσεν αυτό επί την όνον, και ανέφερεν αυτόν· και ήλθεν εις την πόλιν ο προφήτης ο γέρων, διά να πενθήση και να θάψη αυτόν. 30Και έθεσε το σώμα αυτού εν τω τάφω αυτού· και επένθησαν επ' αυτόν, λέγοντες, Φευ αδελφέ μου 31Και αφού έθαψεν αυτόν, ελάλησε προς τους υιούς αυτού, λέγων, Αφού αποθάνω, θάψατε και εμέ εν τω τάφω, όπου ετάφη ο άνθρωπος του Θεού· θέσατε τα οστά μου πλησίον των οστέων αυτού· 32διότι θέλει εξάπαντος εκτελεσθή το πράγμα, το οποίον εφώνησε διά του λόγου του Κυρίου κατά του θυσιαστηρίου εν Βαιθήλ και κατά πάντων των οίκων των υψηλών τόπων, οίτινες είναι εις τας πόλεις της Σαμαρείας. 33Μετά το πράγμα τούτο δεν επέστρεψεν ο Ιεροβοάμ εκ της οδού αυτού της κακής, αλλ' έκαμε πάλιν εκ των εσχάτων του λαού ιερείς των υψηλών τόπων· όστις ήθελε, καθιέρονεν αυτόν, και εγίνετο ιερεύς των υψηλών τόπων. 34Και έγεινε το πράγμα τούτο αιτία αμαρτίας εις τον οίκον του Ιεροβοάμ, ώστε να εξολοθρεύση και να αφανίση αυτόν από προσώπου της γης.
1Behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by Yahweh’s word to Beth El: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense. 2He cried against the altar by Yahweh’s word, and said, “Altar, altar, thus says Yahweh: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name. On you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and they will burn men’s bones on you.’” 3He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which Yahweh has spoken: Behold, the altar will be split apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.” 4When the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam put out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” His hand, which he put out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to himself. 5The altar also was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by Yahweh’s word. 6The king answered the man of God, “Now entreat the favor of Yahweh your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again.” The man of God entreated Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. 7The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.” 8The man of God said to the king, “Even if you gave me half of your house, I would not go in with you, neither would I eat bread nor drink water in this place; 9for so was it commanded me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘You shall eat no bread, nor drink water, neither return by the way that you came.’” 10So he went another way, and didn’t return by the way that he came to Bethel. 11Now there lived an old prophet in Bethel; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king. 12Their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” Now his sons had seen which way the man of God went, who came from Judah. 13He said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it. 14He went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. He said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” He said, “I am.” 15Then he said to him, “Come home with me, and eat bread.” 16He said, “I may not return with you, nor go in with you; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place. 17For it was said to me by Yahweh’s word, ‘You shall eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that you came.’” 18He said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’” He lied to him. 19So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house, and drank water. 20As they sat at the table, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet who brought him back; 21and he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Because you have been disobedient to the mouth of Yahweh, and have not kept the commandment which Yahweh your God commanded you, 22but came back, and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread, and drink no water”; your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” 23After he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24When he had gone, a lion met him by the way and killed him. His body was cast on the path, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the body. 25Behold, men passed by, and saw the body thrown on the path, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived. 26When the prophet who brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to the mouth of Yahweh. Therefore Yahweh has delivered him to the lion, which has mauled him and slain him, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke to him.” 27He spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me.” They saddled it. 28He went and found his body thrown on the path, and the donkey and the lion standing by the body. The lion had not eaten the body, nor mauled the donkey. 29The prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. He came to the city of the old prophet to mourn, and to bury him. 30He laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!” 31After he had buried him, he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, then bury me in the tomb in which the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones. 32For the saying which he cried by Yahweh’s word against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, will surely happen.” 33After this thing Jeroboam didn’t return from his evil way, but again made priests of the high places from among all the people. Whoever wanted to, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places. 34This thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the surface of the earth.

Toen bad de man Gods het aangezicht des HEEREN ernstelijk; en de hand des konings kwam weder tot hem, en werd gelijk te voren. 7En de koning sprak tot den man Gods: Kom met mij naar huis, en sterk u, en ik zal u een geschenk geven. 8Maar de man Gods zeide tot den koning: Al gaaft gij mij de helft van uw huis, zo zou ik niet met u gaan, en ik zou in deze plaats geen brood eten, noch water drinken. 9Want zo heeft mij de HEERE geboden door Zijn woord, zeggende: Gij zult geen brood eten, noch water drinken; en gij zult niet wederkeren door den weg, dien gij gegaan zijt. 10En hij ging door een anderen weg, en keerde niet weder door den weg, door welken hij te Beth-El gekomen was. 11Een oud profeet nu woonde te Beth-El; en zijn zoon kwam, en vertelde hem al het werk, dat de man Gods te dien dage in Beth-El gedaan had, met de woorden, die hij tot den koning gesproken had; deze vertelden zij ook hun vader. 12En hun vader sprak tot hen: Wat weg is hij getogen? En hij zeide: Ik ben het. 15Toen zeide hij tot hem: Kom met mij naar huis, en eet brood. 16Doch hij zeide: Ik kan niet met u wederkeren, noch met u inkomen; ik zal ook geen brood eten, noch met u water drinken, in deze plaats. 17Want een woord is tot mij geschied door het woord des HEEREN: Gij zult aldaar noch brood eten, noch water drinken; gij zult niet wederkeren, gaande door den weg, door denwelken gij gegaan zijt. 18En hij zeide tot hem: Ik ben ook een profeet, gelijk gij, en een engel heeft tot mij gesproken door het woord des HEEREN, zeggende: Breng hem weder met u in uw huis, dat hij brood ete en water drinke. Doch hij loog hem. 19En hij keerde met hem wederom, en at brood in zijn huis, en dronk water. 20En het geschiedde, als zij aan de tafel zaten, dat het woord des HEEREN geschiedde tot den profeet, die hem had doen wederkeren; 21En hij riep tot den man Gods, die uit Juda gekomen was, zeggende: Zo zegt de HEERE: Daarom dat gij den mond des HEEREN zijt wederspannig geweest, en niet gehouden hebt het gebod, dat u de HEERE, uw God, geboden had, 22Maar zijt wedergekeerd, en hebt brood gegeten en water gedronken ter plaatse, waarvan Hij tot u gesproken had: Gij zult geen brood eten noch water drinken; zo zal uw dood lichaam in uw vaderen graf niet komen. 23En het geschiedde, nadat hij brood gegeten, en nadat hij gedronken had, dat hij hem den ezel zadelde, te weten voor den profeet, dien hij had koen wederkeren. 24Zo toog hij heen, en een leeuw vond hem op den weg, en doodde hem; en zijn dood lichaam lag geworpen op den weg, en de ezel stond daarbij; ook stond de leeuw bij het dode lichaam. 25En ziet, er gingen lieden voorbij, en zagen het dode lichaam geworpen op den weg, en den leeuw, staande bij het dode lichaam; en zij kwamen en zeiden het in de stad, waarin de oude profeet woonde. 26Als de profeet, die hem van den weg had doen wederkeren, dit hoorde, zo zeide hij: Het is de man Gods, die den mond des HEEREN wederspannig is geweest; daarom heeft de HEERE hem den leeuw overgegeven die hem gebroken, en hem gedood heeft, naar het woord des HEEREN, dat Hij tot hem gesproken had. 27Verder sprak hij tot zijn zonen, zeggende: Zadelt mij den ezel. En zij zadelden hem. 28Toen toog hij heen, en vond zijn dood lichaam geworpen op den weg, en den ezel, en den leeuw, staande bij het dode lichaam; de leeuw had het dode lichaam niet gegeten, en den ezel niet gebroken. 29Toen nam de profeet het dode lichaam van den man Gods op, en legde dat op den ezel, en voerde het wederom; zo kwam de oude profeet in de stad om rouw te bedrijven en hem te begraven. 30En hij legde zijn dood lichaam in zijn graf; en zij maakten over hem een weeklage: Ach, mijn broeder! 31Het geschiedde nu, nadat hij hem begraven had, dat hij sprak tot zijn zonen, zeggende: Als ik zal gestorven zijn, zo begraaft mij in dat graf, waarin de man Gods begraven is, en legt mijn beenderen bij zijn beenderen. 32Want de zaak zal gewisselijk geschieden, die hij door het woord des HEEREN uitgeroepen heeft tegen het altaar, dat te Beth-El is, en tegen al de huizen der hoogten, die in de steden van Samaria zijn. 33Na deze geschiedenis keerde zich Jerobeam niet van zijn bozen weg; maar maakte wederom priesters der hoogten van de geringsten des volks; wie wilde, diens hand vulde hij, en werd een van de priesters der hoogten. 34En hij werd in deze zaak het huis van Jerobeam tot zonde, om hetzelve te doen afsnijden en te verdelgen van den aardbodem.
