1No dia vinte e quatro do mesmo mês, os filhos de Israel se reuniram em jejum, com sacos, e com terra sobre si. 2E a descendência de Israel já havia se separado de todos os estrangeiros; então puseram-se de pé, confessaram seus pecados, e as iniquidades de seus pais. 3Pois, levantados de pé em seu lugar, leram no livro da lei de SENHOR seu Deus uma quarta parte do dia, e em outra quarta parte confessaram e adoraram ao SENHOR seu Deus. 4E Jesua, Bani, Cadmiel, Serebias, Buni, Sebanias, Bani e Quenai, se puseram de pé na escadaria dos Levitas, e clamaram em alta voz ao SENHOR seu Deus. 5E os levitas Jesua, Cadmiel, Bani, Hasbaneias, Serebias, Hodias, Sebanias e Petaías, disseram: Levantai-vos, bendizei ao SENHOR vosso Deus para todo o sempre: Bendito o teu glorioso nome, que está exaltado sobre toda bênção e louvor. 6Tu és o único, SENHOR! Tu fizeste o céu, o céu dos céus, e toda o seu exército; a terra e tudo quanto nela há; os mares e tudo quanto neles há; e tu vivificas a todos; os exércitos dos céus te adoram. 7Tu és, SENHOR, o Deus que escolheste a Abrão, e o tiraste de Ur dos caldeus, e puseste nele o nome Abraão; 8E achaste o coração dele fiel diante de ti, e fizeste com ele o pacto para lhe dar a terra dos cananeus, dos heteus, dos amorreus, dos perizeus, dos jebuseus, e dos girgaseus, para a dares à sua descendência; e cumpriste as tuas palavras, porque és justo. 9E olhaste para a aflição de nossos pais no Egito, e ouviste o clamor deles junto ao mar Vermelho; 10E deste sinais e maravilhas a Faraó, e a todos os seus servos, e a todo o povo de sua terra; porque sabias que os tratariam com soberba; e assim fizeste famoso o teu nome, tal como o é hoje. 11E dividiste o mar diante deles, e passaram por meio do mar a seco; e lançaste a seus perseguidores nas profundezas, como uma pedra em águas violentas. 12E com coluna de nuvem os guiaste de dia, e com coluna de fogo de noite, para os iluminares no caminho por onde haviam de ir. 13E sobre o monte de Sinai desceste, e falaste com eles desde o céu; e deste-lhes regras justas, leis verdadeiras, e estatutos e mandamentos bons. 14E ensinaste a eles teu santo sábado; e lhes mandaste preceitos e estatutos, por meio de teu servo Moisés. 15E deste-lhes pão do céu em sua fome, e em sua sede lhes tiraste águas da pedra; e disseste a eles que entrassem para tomar posse da terra, pela qual juraste com mão erguida, que a darias a eles. 16Porém eles, nossos pais, agiram com soberba; endureceram sua cerviz, e não deram ouvidos a teus mandamentos, 17E recusaram te ouvir, e não se lembraram de tuas maravilhas que havias feito com eles; ao invés disso, endureceram sua cerviz, e em sua rebelião levantaram um líder para voltarem à sua escravidão. Porém tu, que és Deus que perdoas, clemente e misericordioso, tardio para se irar, e grande em bondade, não os desamparaste. 18Até quando fizeram para si bezerro de fundição, e disseram: Este é teu Deus que te tirou do Egito; e cometeram grandes blasfêmias; 19Tu, contudo, pela tua grande misericórdia não os abandonaste no deserto; a coluna de nuvem nunca se afastou deles de dia, para os guiar pelo caminho, nem a coluna de fogo de noite, para os iluminar no caminho pelo qual haviam de ir. 20E deste o teu bom Espírito para os ensinar, e não tiraste o teu maná de suas bocas, e lhes deste água em sua sede. 21Assim os sustentaste por quarenta anos no deserto; de nenhuma coisa tiveram falta; suas roupas não se envelheceram, nem seus pés se incharam. 22Também lhes deste reinos e povos, e os repartistes por cantos; assim tomaram posse da terra de Siom, a terra do rei de Hesbom, e a terra de Ogue, rei de Basã. 23E multiplicaste seus filhos como as estrelas do céu, e os trouxeste à terra, da qual tinhas dito a seus pais, que entrariam para tomarem posse dela. 24Assim os filhos vieram, e tomaram posse daquela terra; e abateste diante deles aos moradores do território, os cananeus, e os entregaste em suas mãos, como também a seus reis, e aos povos do território, para que fizessem deles à sua vontade. 25E tomaram cidades fortificadas e terra fértil, e tomaram posse de casas cheias de toda fartura, cisternas cavadas, vinhas e olivais, e muitas árvores frutíferas; e comeram, se fartaram, engordaram, e se deleitaram pela tua grande bondade. 26Porém eles foram desobedientes, e se rebelaram contra ti; desprezaram tua lei, e mataram teus profetas que lhes alertavam para que convertessem a ti; assim fizeram grandes abominações. 27Por isso tu os entregaste nas mãos de seus inimigos, os quais os afligiram; e no tempo de sua angústia clamaram a ti, e tu desde os céus os ouviste; e segundo tua grande misericórdia tu lhes davas libertadores, que os salvaram da mão de seus inimigos. 28Mas assim que tinham repouso, voltavam a fazer o mal diante de ti; e tu os abandonavas nas mãos de seus inimigos, para que os dominassem. E eles se convertiam, e clamavam a ti, e tu os ouvias desde os céus; e segundo tua misericórdia muitas vezes os livraste. 29E os alertaste, para os fazer voltar à tua lei; porém eles agiram com soberba, e não deram ouvidos teus mandamentos; ao invés disso, pecaram contra teus juízos, os quais quem praticar, por causa deles viverá; e deram as costas, endureceram sua cerviz, e não deram ouvidos. 30Porém os suportaste por muitos anos, e os alertaste com teu Espírito por meio de teus profetas, mas não deram ouvidos; por isso tu os entregaste nas mãos dos povos das terras. 31Mas por tua grande misericórdia não os destruíste por completo, nem os desamparaste; porque tu és Deus clemente e misericordioso. 32Agora pois, Deus nosso, Deus grande, poderoso e temível, que guardas o pacto e a bondade, não consideres pouco toda a opressão que alcançou a nós, nossos reis, nossos príncipes, nossos sacerdotes, nossos profetas, nossos pais, e todo o teu povo, desde os dias dos reis da Assíria até o dia de hoje. 33Tu, porém, és justo em tudo quanto veio sobre nós; porque agiste fielmente, mas nós agimos perversamente. 34E nossos reis, nossos príncipes, nossos sacerdotes, e nossos pais, não praticaram tua lei, nem deram ouvidos a teus mandamentos e teus testemunhos, com que os alertavas. 35Porque eles, mesmo em seu reino, nos muitos bens que lhes deste, e na terra espaçosa e fértil que entregaste a deles, não te serviram, nem se converteram de suas más obras. 36Eis que hoje somos servos, na terra que havias dado a nossos pais para que comessem seus fruto e o seu bem, eis que nela somos servos. 37E sua grande renda é para os reis que puseste sobre nós por nossos pecados; e eles à sua vontade dominam sobre nossos corpos e sobre nossos animais, e estamos em grande angústia. 38A por causa de tudo isso nós fazemos um pacto fiel, e o escrevemos, e nossos príncipes, nossos Levitas, e nossos sacerdotes o selaram.
1Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth on them. 2The seed of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 3They stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and a fourth part they confessed, and worshiped Yahweh their God. 4Then Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani of the Levites stood up on the stairs, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God. 5Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless Yahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting! Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise! 6You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth and all things that are on it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all. The army of heaven worships you. 7You are Yahweh, the God who chose Abram, and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham, 8and found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his seed, and have performed your words; for you are righteous. 9“You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea, 10and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is this day. 11You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go. 13“You came down also on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant, 15and gave them bread from the sky for their hunger, and brought water out of the rock for them for their thirst, and commanded them that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them. 16“But they and our fathers dealt proudly and hardened their neck, didn’t listen to your commandments, 17and refused to obey, neither were they mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn’t forsake them. 18Yes, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed awful blasphemies; 19yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness: the pillar of cloud didn’t depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go. 20You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. 21“Yes, forty years you sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet didn’t swell. 22Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. 24“So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they pleased. 25They took fortified cities, and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns dug out, vineyards, and olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled, became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness. 26“Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their back, and killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies. 27Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. In the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries. 28But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore left you them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them; yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard from heaven; and many times you delivered them according to your mercies, 29and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they dealt proudly, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, (which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear. 30Yet many years you put up with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet would they not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31“Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you did not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God. 32Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, don’t let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day. 33However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly; 34neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them. 35For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land which you gave before them, neither did they turn from their wicked works. 36“Behold, we are servants this day, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, behold, we are servants in it. 37It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our livestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. 38Yet for all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, and our priests, seal it.”
1Voorts op den vier en twintigsten dag dezer maand verzamelden zich de kinderen Israels met vasten en met zakken, en aarde was op hen. 2En het zaad Israels scheidde zich af van alle vreemden. En zij stonden, en deden belijdenis van hun zonden en hunner vaderen ongerechtigheden. 3Want als zij opgestaan waren op hun standplaats, zo lazen zij in het wetboek des HEEREN, huns Gods, een vierendeel van den dag; en op een ander vierendeel deden zij belijdenis, en aanbaden den HEERE, hun God. 4Jesua nu, en Bani, Kadmiel, Sebanja, Bunni, Serebja, Bani en Chenani, stonden op het hoge gestoelte der Levieten, en riepen met luider stem tot den HEERE, hun God; 5En de Levieten, Jesua, en Kadmiel, Bani, Hasabneja; Serebja, Hodia, Sebanja, Petahja, zeiden: Staat op, looft den HEERE, uw God, van eeuwigheid tot in eeuwigheid; en men love den Naam Uwer heerlijkheid, die verhoogd is boven allen lof en prijs! 6Gij zijt die HEERE alleen, Gij hebt gemaakt den hemel, den hemel der hemelen, en al hun heir, de aarde en al wat daarop is, de zeeen en al wat daarin is, en Gij maakt die allen levend; en het heir der hemelen aanbidt U. 7Gij zijt die HEERE, de God, Die Abram hebt verkoren, en hem uit Ur der Chaldeen uitgevoerd; en Gij hebt zijn naam gesteld Abraham. 8En Gij hebt zijn hart getrouw gevonden voor Uw aangezicht, en hebt een verbond met hem gemaakt, dat Gij zoudt geven het land der Kanaanieten, der Hethieten, der Amorieten, en der Ferezieten, en der Jebusieten, en der Girgasieten, dat Gij het zijn zade zoudt geven; en Gij hebt Uw woorden bevestigd, omdat Gij rechtvaardig zijt. 9En Gij hebt aangezien onzer vaderen ellende in Egypte, en Gij hebt hun geroep gehoord aan de Schelfzee; 10En Gij hebt tekenen en wonderen gedaan aan Farao, en aan al zijn knechten, en aan al het volk zijns lands; want Gij wist, dat zij trotselijk tegen hen handelden; en Gij hebt U een Naam gemaakt, als het is te dezen dage. 11En Gij hebt de zee voor hun aangezicht gekliefd, dat zij in het midden der zee op het droge zijn doorgegaan; en hun vervolgers hebt Gij in de diepten geworpen, als een steen in sterke wateren. 12En Gij hebt ze des daags geleid met een wolkkolom, en des nachts met een vuurkolom, om hen te lichten op den weg, waarin zij zouden wandelen. 13En Gij zijt neergedaald op den berg Sinai, en hebt met hen gesproken uit den hemel; en Gij hebt hun gegeven rechtmatige rechten, en getrouwe wetten, goede inzettingen en geboden. 14En Gij hebt Uw heiligen sabbat bekend gemaakt; en Gij hebt hun geboden, en inzettingen en een wet bevolen, door de hand van Uw knecht Mozes. 15En Gij hebt hun brood uit den hemel gegeven voor hun honger, en hun water uit de steenrots voortgebracht voor hun dorst; en Gij hebt tot hen gezegd, dat zij zouden ingaan om te erven het land, waarover Gij Uw hand ophieft, dat Gij het hun zoudt geven. 16Maar zij en onze vaders hebben trotselijk gehandeld, en zij hebben hun nek verhard, en niet gehoord naar Uw geboden; 17En zij hebben geweigerd te horen, en niet gedacht aan Uw wonderen, die Gij bij hen gedaan hadt, en hebben hun nek verhard, en in hun wederspannigheid een hoofd gesteld, om weder te keren tot hun dienstbaarheid. Doch Gij, een God van vergevingen, genadig en barmhartig, lankmoedig, en groot van weldadigheid, hebt hen evenwel niet verlaten. 18Zelfs, als zij zich een gegoten kalf gemaakt hadden, en gezegd: Dit is uw God, Die u uit Egypte heeft opgevoerd; en grote lasteren gedaan hadden; 19Hebt Gij hen nochtans door Uw grote barmhartigheid niet verlaten in de woestijn; de wolkkolom week niet van hen des daags, om hen op den weg te leiden, noch de vuurkolom des nachts, om hen te lichten, en dat, op den weg, waarin zij zouden wandelen. 20En Gij hebt Uw goeden Geest gegeven om hen te onderwijzen; en Uw Manna hebt Gij niet geweerd van hun mond, en water hebt Gij hun gegeven voor hun dorst. 21Alzo hebt Gij hen veertig jaren onderhouden in de woestijn; zij hebben geen gebrek gehad; hun klederen zijn niet veroud, en hun voeten niet gezwollen. 22Voorts hebt Gij hun koninkrijken en volken gegeven, en hebt hen verdeeld in hoeken. Alzo hebben zij erfelijk bezeten het land van Sihon, te weten, het land des konings van Hesbon, en het land van Og, koning van Basan. 23Gij hebt ook hun kinderen vermenigvuldigd, als de sterren des hemels; en Gij hebt hen gebracht in het land, waarvan Gij tot hun vaderen hadt gezegd, dat zij zouden ingaan om het erfelijk te bezitten. 24Alzo zijn de kinderen daarin gekomen, en hebben dat land erfelijk ingenomen; en Gij hebt de inwoners des lands, de Kanaanieten, voor hun aangezicht ten ondergebracht, en hebt hen in hun hand gegeven, mitsgaders hun koningen en de volken des lands, om daarmede te doen naar hun welgevallen. 25En zij hebben vaste steden en een vet land ingenomen, en erfelijk bezeten, huizen, vol van alle goed, uitgehouwen bornputten, wijngaarden, olijfgaarden en bomen van spijze, in menigte; en zij hebben gegeten, en zijn zat en vet geworden, en hebben in wellust geleefd, door Uw grote goedigheid. 26Maar zij zijn wederspannig geworden, en hebben tegen U gerebelleerd, en Uw wet achter hun rug geworpen, en Uw profeten gedood die tegen hen betuigden, om hen te doen wederkeren tot U; alzo hebben zij grote lasteren gedaan. 27Daarom hebt Gij hen gegeven in de hand hunner benauwers, die hen benauwd hebben; maar als zij in den tijd hunner benauwdheid tot U riepen, hebt Gij van den hemel gehoord, en hun naar Uw grote barmhartigheden verlossers gegeven, die hen uit de hand hunner benauwers verlosten. 28Maar als zij rust hadden, keerden zij weder om kwaad te doen voor Uw aangezicht; zo verliet Gij hen in de hand hunner vijanden, dat zij over hen heersten; als zij zich dan bekeerden, en U aanriepen, zo hebt Gij hen van den hemel gehoord, en hebt hen naar Uw barmhartigheden tot vele tijden uitgerukt. 29En Gij hebt tegen hen betuigd, om hen te doen wederkeren tot Uw wet; maar zij hebben trotselijk gehandeld, en niet gehoord naar Uw geboden, en tegen Uw rechten, tegen dezelve hebben zij gezondigd, door dewelke een mens, die ze doet, leven zal; en zij hebben hun schouder teruggetogen, en hun nek verhard, en niet gehoord. 30Doch Gij vertoogt het vele jaren over hen, en betuigdet tegen hen door Uw Geest, door den dient Uwer profeten, maar zij neigden het oor niet; daarom hebt Gij hen gegeven in de hand van de volken der landen. 31Doch door Uw grote barmhartigheden hebt Gij hen niet vernield, noch hen verlaten; want Gij zijt een genadig en barmhartig God. 32Nu dan, o onze God, Gij grote, Gij machtige, en Gij vreselijke God, Die het verbond en de weldadigheid houdt; laat voor Uw aangezicht niet gering zijn al de moeite, die ons getroffen heeft, onze koningen, onze vorsten, en onze priesteren; en onze profeten, en onze vaderen, en Uw ganse volk, van de dagen der koningen van Assur af tot op dezen dag. 33Doch Gij zijt rechtvaardig, in alles, wat ons overkomen is; want Gij hebt trouwelijk gehandeld, maar wij hebben goddelooslijk gehandeld. 34En onze koningen, onze vorsten, onze priesters en onze vaders hebben Uw wet niet gedaan; en zij hebben niet geluisterd naar Uw geboden, en naar Uw getuigenissen, die Gij tegen hen betuigdet. 35Want zij hebben U niet gediend in hun koninkrijk, en in Uw menigvuldig goed, dat Gij hun gaaft, en in dat wijde en dat vette land, dat Gij voor hun aangezicht gegeven hadt; en zij hebben zich niet bekeerd van hun boze werken. 36Zie, wij zijn heden knechten; ja, het land, dat Gij onzen vaderen gegeven hebt, om de vrucht daarvan, en het goede daarvan te eten, zie, daarin zijn wij knechten. 37En het vermenigvuldigt zijn inkomste voor den koningen, die Gij over ons gesteld hebt, om onzer zonden wil; en zij heersen over onze lichamen en over onze beesten, naar hun welgevallen; alzo zijn wij in grote benauwdheid. 38En in dit alles maken wij een vast verbond en schrijven het; en onze vorsten, onze Levieten en onze priesteren zullen het verzegelen.
